Gen Hoshino and Masayasu Wakabayashi Talk Heart-to-Heart in New Variety Show 'LIGHTHOUSE'
When two of Japan's leading entertainers get together for some candid one-on-one conversations, be prepared for some real talk, with lots of laughs bundled in.
Gen Hoshino - a musician, actor, and author - meets up with comedian Masayasu Wakabayashi, one half of the comedy duo Audrey, once a month over half a year to chat about their vulnerabilities and worries. Dubbed the titular LIGHTHOUSE by supervising producer Nobuyuki Sakuma (known for Last One Standing), the duo sheds light on worries faced by ordinary folks while struggling with their own darkness.
In the trailer, we see how each conversation revolves around a "single line journal" approach, where both creators share succinct written snippets encapsulating their daily experiences and worries throughout the month. Each line reveals complex struggles that defy concise expression, addressing universally relatable issues such as work, family, the future, and interpersonal relationships.
Premiering on August 22 globally, the conversations over six episodes are inspired by different settings and locations. For example, the first episode unfolds in Asagaya, a Tokyo neighborhood that was significant to both of them early in their careers. Here, Hoshino delves into darker moments, recounting painful experiences and memories, while Wakabayashi vents about his comedy partner, Toshiaki Kasuga.
Infused with laughter, their conversations - and perspectives - evolve over six months. Hoshino muses, "It's almost as if Wakabayashi has undergone a metamorphosis in these six months. The conversation will reveal why." On the other hand, Wakabayashi candidly remarks, "I always perceived Hoshino as a genius, but this show unveiled his ordinary life."
Beyond contributing to the conversations, Hoshino was the creative mind behind the music on LIGHTHOUSE. He not only wrote the main theme song, "Mad Hope", but also wrote five new songs inspired by the conversation with Wakabayashi, and you'll see the live performances of these songs at the end of the episodes.
Come join the conversation when LIGHTHOUSE premieres on August 22 only on Netflix globally.
