Wednesday's Broadcast Ratings: FOX Tops Charts with "Empire"

Here are the highlights of the 16 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks last night (9/28/16):

FOX (8.319 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 2.8, #1) was the top draw on Wednesday thanks to week two of "Lethal Weapon" (7.054 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 1.9, #T4) and "Empire" (9.584 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 3.6, #1).

ABC (6.926 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.9, #2) then snagged the silver with its second week lineup of "The Goldbergs" (6.445 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 1.9, #T4), "Speechless" (6.396 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 1.8, #T6), "Modern Family" (7.341 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 2.3, #2), "Black-ish" (5.556 million viewers, #13; adults 18-49: 1.6, #9) and "Designated Survivor" (7.908 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.8, #T6).

Next up was CBS (8.111 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.7, #3) with a new "Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X" (9.116 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 2.1, #3) followed by the return of "Criminal Minds" (8.871 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.8, #T6) and "Code Black" (6.348 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T12).

Meanwhile, NBC (5.896 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.4, #4) offered up originals from "Blindspot" (5.567 million viewers, #12; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T12), "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (6.045 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 1.5, #T10) and "Chicago PD" (6.077 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 1.5, #T10).

And finally, a repeat "Penn & Teller: Fool Us" (1.604 million viewers, #14; adults 18-49: 0.4, #T14), the season finale of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" (1.564 million viewers, #15; adults 18-49: 0.4, #T14) and a second "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" (1.424 million viewers, #16; adults 18-49: 0.4, #T14) closed out the evening on The CW (1.549 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.4, #5).

· In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," 0.7/4; "Late Show," 0.4/2; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 0.6/4.

· From 12:35-1:05 a.m. ET, ABC's "Nightline" averaged a 1.3/4 in metered-market households and a 0.3/2 in 18-49 in the Local People Meters.

· From 12:35-1:35 a.m. ET, "Late Night with Seth Meyers" (1.1/4 in metered-market households) tied CBS's "Late Late Show" (1.1/4). In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late Night" (0.4/3 in 18-49) topped "Late Late Show" (0.3/2).

· At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.7/3 in metered-market households and a 0.2/2 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.


Here are the highlights of the 14 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks one year ago (9/30/15):

FOX (9.926 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 3.7, #1) was still the network to beat on Wednesday with week two of "Rosewood" (6.176 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 1.9, #7) and "Empire" (13.675 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 5.4, #1).

CBS (9.258 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 2.0, #2) then took home the silver with a new "Survivor: Cambodia - Second Chance" (9.339 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 2.3, #T3) followed by the return of "Criminal Minds" (9.893 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 2.0, #6) and the premiere of "Code Black" (8.541 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 1.6, #11).
