UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - Oct. 21, 2014 - NBC has finished #1 in adults 18-49 and all other key demographics among the Big 4 networks for the primetime week of Oct. 13-19, with "Sunday Night Football," "The Voice," "The Blacklist," "Marry Me" and "Chicago Fire" all ranking among the top 30 primetime shows on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox for the week in 18-49. According to "live plus same day" viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research, NBC averaged a 2.6 rating, 8 share in adults 18-49 and 8.9 million viewers overall for the Oct. 13-19 week.
NBC has now won each of the season's opening four weeks in adults 18-49 and has also finished #1 or tied for #1 among the Big 4 networks for nine of the last 10 weeks.
"Sunday Night Football" was the week's #1 primetime telecast on the Big 4 networks in every key measure - adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54, plus total viewers - and was #1 in teens 12-17 and tied for #1 with an ABC "Charlie Brown" special in kids 2-11.
Note that CBS was boosted this week by Thursday NFL football, which itself was boosted by NFL Network viewership (1.1 rating in 18-49, 2.6 million viewers overall Thursday night) that was added into CBS's averages.
Joining "SNF" among the week's top 35 programs in adults 18-49 on the Big 4 are Monday's "The Voice" (#5), Tuesday's "Voice" (tied for #7), Monday's "The Blacklist" (tied for #10), Tuesday's "Marry Me" premiere (tied for #22), Tuesday's "Chicago Fire" (tied for #27), Tuesday's "About a Boy" (tied for #31) and Wednesday's "Law & Order: SVU" (tied for #31). Rankings exclude sports pre- and post-game shows.
For the season, NBC ranks #1 among the Big 4 networks in adults 18-49 and every other key demographic (including a tie for #1 with CBS in men 25-54).
In total viewers, NBC is #2 for the season, up +0.3% versus last season to 9.907 million viewers from 9.881 million, for NBC's highest average at this point in the season in eight years (since averaging 10.5 million through four weeks in 2006).
Primetime averages for the week of Oct. 13-19 in adults 18-49 are: NBC, 2.6/8; ABC, 2.1/7; CBS, 2.1/7; Fox, 1.6/5; and CW, 0.7/2. In overall total viewers, the weekly averages were: CBS, 10.5 million; NBC, 8.9 million; ABC, 7.9 million; Fox, 4.7 million; and CW, 1.9 million.
"Most current" averages for the season to date are: NBC, 3.0/9; CBS, 2.6/8; ABC, 2.4/8; Fox, 1.8/5; and CW, 0.5/1. In overall total viewers, the season averages are: CBS, 11.9 million; NBC, 9.9 million; ABC, 8.7 million; Fox, 5.4 million; and CW, 1.6 million.
NBC highlights for the week of Oct. 13-19:
Monday: NBC won the night in 18-49 among the Big 4 by a season-high +44% margin (with a 3.6 rating vs. a 2.5 for #2 CBS), stretching its lead among those networks for a third straight week -- up from a +27% margin the prior week, +20% two weeks ago and +6% during premiere week. NBC also won Monday night among the Big 4 in total viewers for the first time this season and by the biggest margin among the Big 4 nets on a Monday so far this season (+5%).
"The Voice" (4.0/11 in 18-49, 13.3 million viewers overall from 8-10 p.m. ET) matched its highest Monday 18-49 rating since Sept. 22 during premiere week and generated its biggest overall Monday audience since March 17. Week to week, "The Voice" grew by +5% in 18-49 (4.0 vs. 3.8) and +6% in total viewers (13.3 million vs. 12.6 million). "The Voice" led the time period among the Big 4 in adults 18-49 and most other key measures, including total-viewer wins over "Dancing With the Stars" (12.7 million) and CBS's 8-10 p.m. lineup (12.5 million).
"Live Plus Three Day" Ratings: "The Voice" grew by +21% in 18-49 (to a 4.88 rating from a 4.02) and 2.1 million viewers overall (15.4 million vs. 13.3 million) going from live plus same day rating to L+3. "Live Plus Seven Day" Ratings: Through season's first two weeks, Monday's "Voice" grew in L+7 vs. L+SD by +29% in 18-49 rating (to a 5.21 from a 4.04) and more than 2.7 million viewers overall (15.9 million vs. 13.1 million).
"The Blacklist" (2.8/8 in 18-49, 9.8 million viewers overall from 10-11 p.m. ET) ranked as the #1 drama of the night on the Big 4 in 18-49 on a highly competitive evening that included "Gotham," "Scorpion," "Sleepy Hollow," "Castle" and "NCIS: LA." "The Blacklist" won the hour among ABC, CBS and NBC in virtually all key measures, beating ABC's "Castle" in adults 18-49 by a +47% margin (2.8 vs. 1.9) and CBS's "NCIS: LA" by +75% (2.8 vs. 1.6). "The Blacklist" was up week to week by +8% in adults 18-49 (to a 2.8 rating from a 2.6), to match its high since Sept. 22 when its season premiere earned a 3.5.
L+3: "The Blacklist" grew by +53% in 18-49 (to a 4.23 rating from a 2.77) and more than 4.9 million viewers overall (14.7 million vs. 9.8 million) going from L+SD to L+3). In L+3, "The Blacklist" was the #1 drama of the night in: adults 18-49 (4.23) and total viewers, as well the #1 drama in size of increase going from L+SD to L+3 in 18-49 rating point (+1.46) and percentage (+53%) and total viewers (+4.979 million) and total-viewer percentage (+51%). L+7: In week two of the season, "The Blacklist" delivered television's biggest increase in total viewers, adding 5.997 million persons going from L+SD to L+7. So far this season, "Blacklist" is growing by +64% in 18-49 rating (to a 5.12 from a 3.12) and 6.4 million viewers (17.9 million vs. 11.5 million) going from L+SD to L+7.
Tuesday: NBC ranked #1 Tuesday night among the Big 4 in adults 18-49 for a 10th week in a row.
"The Voice" (3.4/11 in 18-49, 11.9 million viewers overall from 8-9 p.m. ET) ranked as the #1 show of the night on the Big 4 in adults 18-49 and virtually all other key demos. "The Voice" won the 8-9 p.m. hour among those networks by a +36% margin (3.4 vs. 2.5 for "NCIS"). "The Voice" matched its comparable fifth Tuesday edition from the prior cycle in 18-49 (3.4 vs. 3.4 on March 25). From its first half-hour to its second, "The Voice" grew in every key measure,.
L+3: "The Voice" grew by +21% in 18-49 (to a 4.13 from a 3.42 and 1.8 million viewers overall (14.1 million vs. 12.3 million) going from L+SD to L+3. L+7: Tuesday's "Voice" is growing by an average +25% in 18-49 rating (to a 5.16 from a 4.13) and 2.5 million viewers overall (16.0 million vs. 13.5 million) going fro L+SD to L+7.
The premiere of "Marry Me" (2.3/7 in 18-49, 7.5 million viewers overall from 9-9:31 p.m. ET) ranked as the #1 telecast of any Tuesday comedy on a Big 4 network in 18-49 since March 4, 2014 ("About a Boy," 2.5). "Marry Me" retained 68% of the prior hour's rating from "The Voice," versus 61% in this slot last season for the first regular original of "About a Boy." "Marry Me" tied for #1 in the highly competitive half-hour and is the #2 comedy premiere so far this season in 18-49 and total viewers, behind only ABC's "Black-ish."
L+3: "Marry Me" grew by +15% in 18-49 (to a 2.66 from a 2.31 and 931,000 viewers overall (8.5 million vs. 7.5 million) going from L+SD to L+3
The second season debut of "About a Boy" (1.7/5 in 18-49, 5.8 million viewers overall from 9:31-10 p.m. ET) won the slot in adults 18-34 and women 18-34 among the Big 4. Versus its season finale in May, "About a Boy" is up +13% in 18-49 rating (1.7 vs. 1.5 at 9:31 on May 13) and up +3% in total viewers (5.826 million vs. 5.680 million).
L+3: "About a Boy" grew by +20% in 18-49 (to a 2.03 from a 1.69 and 949,000 viewers overall (6.8 million vs. 5.8 million) going from L+SD to L+3
"Chicago Fire" (1.9/6 in 18-49, 7.1 million viewers overall from 10-11 p.m. ET) matched the show's highest rating with no "Voice" lead-in since Jan. 7 (2.0), retaining 90% of the prior week's rating despite the absence of a "Voice" lead-in this week. "Chicago Fire" won the slot among ABC, CBS and NBC in 18-49 by a +27% margin (1.9 vs. 1.5 for CBS's "Person of Interest"), while topping ABC's "Forever" by +73% (1.9 vs. 1.1).
L+3: "Chicago Fire" grew by +43% in 18-49 (to a 2.78 from a 1.93 and 2.8 million viewers overall (9.9 million vs. 7.1 million) going from L+SD to L+3. L+7: "Chicago Fire" is increasing by an average +46% in 18-49 rating (to a 3.57 from a 2.45) and 3.6 million viewers overall (12.5 million vs. 8.9 million) going to L+7 from L+SD.
Wednesday: "The Mysteries of Laura" (1.4/5 in 18-49, 8.7 million viewers overall from 8-9 p.m. ET) grew week to week by 8% in 18-49 rating (to a 1.4 from a 1.3) and pulled within a tenth of a rating point of the show's regular-slot debut on Sept. 24 (1.5). "The Mysteries of Laura" is the first new drama on the Big 4 this fall to finish within 0.1 of its regular-slot premiere in its fourth week in the time period. In the time slot, "Laura" ranked #2 in total viewers and was up +74% versus NBC's regular-program average in the time period last season (8.7 million vs. 5.0 million).
L+3: "The Mysteries of Laura" grew by +19% in 18-49 (to a 1.64 from a 1.38) and 1.3 million viewers overall (10.0 million vs. 8.7 million) going from L+SD to L+3. L+7: "The Mysteries of Laura" is growing by +26% in 18-49 rating (to a 2.12 from a 1.68) and more than 1.9 million viewers overall (11.7 million vs. 9.7 million) going to L+7 from L+SD.
"Law & Order: SVU" (1.7/5 in 18-49, 7.2 million viewers overall from 9-10 p.m. ET) maintained 100% of the prior week's 1.7 rating in adults 18-49 and built on this week's lead-in by +21%. In the time slot, "Law & Order: SVU" ranked #2 among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults, men and women 18-34.
L+3: "Law & Order: SVU" grew by +50% in 18-49 (to a 2.55 from a 1.70) and 2.0 million viewers overall (to 9.2 million from 7.2 million) going from L+SD to L+3. L+7: Through the season's first two weeks, "SVU" was increasing by +61% in 18-49 rating (to a 3.21 from a 1.99) and more than 3.0 million viewers overall (12.0 million vs. 9.0 million) going to L+7 from L+SD.
"Chicago P.D." (1.6/5 in 18-49, 6.8 million viewers overall from 10-11 p.m. ET) grew +7% week to week in 18-49 (to a 1.6 from a 1.5) and by +2% in total viewers (6.8 million vs. 6.7 million), achieving three-week highs with its best results in those categories since Sept. 24 during premiere week. This week's "Chicago P.D." retained a season-best 94% of its lead-in from "SVU," up from 88% last week, 83% two weeks ago and 86% during premiere week. "Chicago P.D." pulled within 0.1 of "Stalker" for #1 among ABC, CBS and NBC in the time period (1.6 vs. 1.7), versus a deficit of 0.2 last week (1.5 vs. 1.7) and 0.5 two weeks ago (1.5 vs. 2.0).
L+3: "Chicago P.D." grew by +45% in 18-49 (to a 2.29 from a 1.58) and 2.3 million viewers overall (9.1 million vs. 6.8 million) going from L+SD to L+3. L+7: "Chicago P.D." is growing by an average +64% in 18-49 rating (to a 2.86 from a 1.74) and 3.4 million viewers overall (11.0 million vs. 7.6 million) going to L+7 from L+SD.
Thursday: "The Biggest Loser" (1.3/4 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall from 8-9 p.m. ET) grew +8% week to week in adults 18-49 (to a 1.3 rating from a 1.2). The 1.3 matches the show's top rating since its season premiere on Sept 11 (1.6). In total viewers, "Biggest Loser" hit a five-week high (best since its season premiere, Sept. 11, 5.401 million).
L+3: The prior week's "Biggest Loser" on Oct. 9 grew by +30% in 18-49 (to a 1.59 from a 1.22) and 852,000 viewers overall (to 5.423 million from 4.571 million) going from L+SD to L+3. L+7: "The Biggest Loser" is increasing by an average +35% in 18-49 rating (to a 1.91 from a 1.42) and 1.1 million viewers overall (5.9 million vs. 4.8 million) going to L+7 from L+SD.
"Bad Judge" (1.2/4 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall from 9-9:30 p.m. ET) held 92% of its 1.3 rating in 18-49 for the prior week, as well as the 1.3 for the "Bad Judge" premiere two weeks ago. That makes "Bad Judge" the first new comedy on the Big 4 this season to finish within a tenth of its premiere rating in week three (among five new comedies to have run three weeks so far).
L+3: The previous week's "Bad Judge" on Oct. 9 grew by +25% in 18-49 (to a 1.58 from a 1.26) and 907,000 viewers overall (to 6.146 million from 5.239 million) going from L+SD to L+3. L+7: "Bad Judge" is growing by an average +48% in 18-49 rating (to a 1.91 from a 1.29) and 1.7 million viewers overall (7.5 million vs. 5.8 million) going to L+7 from L+SD.
"A-to-Z" (1.0/3 in 18-49, 3.4 million viewers overall from 9:30-10 p.m. ET) maintained 100% of the prior week's 1.0 rating and is running within 0.2 of a point of its premiere 1.2 of two weeks ago. The only new comedy on the Big 4 so far this fall to remain closer to its premiere rating in week 3 is "Bad Judge." This week's "A-to-Z" retained 83% of its adults 18-49 lead-in from "Bad Judge," up from the prior week's 77%.
L+3: The prior week's "A-to-Z" on Oct. 9 increased by +27% in 18-49 (to a 1.33 from a 1.05) and 651,000 viewers overall (to 4.279 million from 3.628 million) going from L+SD to L+3. L+7: "A-to-Z" is increasing by an average +32% in 18-49 rating (to a 1.58 from a 1.20) and 988,000 viewers overall (5.7 million vs. 4.8 million) going to L+7 from L+SD.
"Parenthood" (1.3/4 in 18-49, 4.2 million viewers overall from 10-11 p.m. ET) maintained 100% of its 1.3 rating of the prior two weeks and has now remained within a tenth of a point of its 1.4 season premiere through weeks two, three and four. Note that the season-debut 1.4 matched the show's highest rating since Oct. 3, 2013. Despite the 10 p.m. hour, "Parenthood" maintained its rating from half-hour to half-hour in adults 18-49 and adults 25-54 (1.6 vs. 1.6) and grew in total viewers (4.3 million vs. 4.1 million).
L+3: The previous week's "Parenthood" on Oct. 9 grew by +65% in 18-49 (to a 2.08 from a 1.26) and 1.8 million viewers overall (to 6.088 million from 4.250 million) going from L+SD to L+3. L+7: "Parenthood" is growing by an average +84% in 18-49 rating (to a 2.48 from a 1.35) and 2.8 million viewers overall (7.1 million vs. 4.3 million) going to L+7 from L+SD.
Upscale: "Parenthood" is the #1 most upscale primetime series on the Big 4 networks in "most current" L+3 results through the opening three weeks of the season, indexing at a 175 among adults 18-49 living in homes with $100K+ incomes (100 represents an average concentration of those homes).
Friday: An encore telecast of "Marry Me" delivered a 0.6/3 in 18-49 and 2.7 million viewers overall from 8-8:30 p.m. ET and a rebroadcast of "About a Boy" averaged a 0.6/2 in 18-49 and 2.4 million viewers overall from 8:30-9 p.m. ET.
"Dateline NBC" (1.2/4 in 18-49 and 5.8 million viewers overall from 9-11 p.m. ET) hit three-week highs in 18-49 and total viewers, with its top results since Sept. 26 during premiere week. Week to week, "Dateline" grew by +9% in 18-49 rating (to a 1.2 from a 1.1) and +12% in total viewers (5.8 million vs. 5.2 million). "Dateline NBC" ranked #1 for its second hour from 10-11 p.m. in adults 18-49 and outrated ABC's "20/20" head to head in the hour in every key measure.
L+3: The prior week's Friday "Dateline NBC" on Oct. 10 grew by +21% in 18-49 (to a 1.27 from a 1.05) and 652,000 viewers (5.8 million vs. 5.2 million). L+7: Friday's "Dateline" is increasing by an average of +24% in 18-49 rating (to a 1.58 from a 1.27) and 970,000 viewers overall (7.2 million vs. 6.2 million) going to L+7 from L+SD.
Saturday: An encore telecast of "The Mysteries of Laura" (0.5/2 in 18-49, 2.4 million viewers overall from 8-9 p.m. ET) ranked #1 among non-sports programs in the time period on the Big 4 in adults 18-49.
A rebroadcast of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (0.5/2 in 18-49, 2.3 million viewers overall from 9-10 p.m. ET) retained 100% of its 18-49 lead-in from "Laura.".
"SNL Vintage" (0.7/2 in 18-49, 2.5 million viewers overall from 10-11 p.m. ET), featuring an encore of an April 8, 2000 telecast of "Saturday Night Live" with host Christopher Walken and musical guest Christina Aguilera, equaled the prior week's "SNL Vintage" rating in this time period in 18-49 (0.7 vs. 0.7).
Sunday: NBC Sports' "Sunday Night Football" (8.2/23 in 18-49, 23.8 million viewers overall from 8:31-11:23 p.m. ET), featuring the San Francisco 49ers at the Denver Broncos, led NBC to nightlong wins among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in every key measure. It's the most-watched Sunday telecast of "SNF" so far this season and the third-most-watched October telecast in the nine years NBC has been carrying "SNF."
For the night (from 7:30-11 p.m. ET), NBC averaged a 7.0 rating in 18-49 and 15ZXZX7 million viewers overall, giving it a +71% margin over #2 Fox in nightlong 18-49 averages among the Big 4 (7.0 from 7:30-11 p.m. for NBC vs. 4.1 from 7-10 for Fox) and a +90% advantage in total viewers (20.6 million vs. 10.9 million for CBS).
