UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - Aug. 12, 2014 - NBC has finished #2 for the primetime week of Aug. 4-10 among the Big 4 networks in adults 18-49 and total viewers, while ranking #1 among those networks in adults 18-34 and women 18-34 and tying for #1 in women 18-49 and 25-54. NBC averaged a 1.1 rating, 4 share in adults 18-49 and 4.7 million viewers overall for the week, according to "live plus same day" viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research.
"America's Got Talent" tied for #3 among primetime programs on the Big 4 last week in adults 18-49 and delivered the #1 and #2 ratings on those nets in total viewers and adults 25-54.
"American Ninja Warrior" ranked #1 or tied for #1 for the week in men 18-34, men 18-49 and men 25-54 among primetime telecasts on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox.
The Tuesday and Wednesday editions of "Talent" tied "Ninja" and two other shows tied for #3 for the week among primetime shows on the Big 4 in adults 18-49. Also ranking in the primetime top 30 last week were Monday's "Running Wild with Bear Grylls" (#14), Tuesday's "Food Fighters" (tied for #15), Wednesday's "Talent" encore (tied for #18), Thursday's "Last Comic Standing" (tied for #21) and Friday's "Dateline NBC" rebroadcast (tied for #21).
NBC matched its 18-49 rating for the same week last year (1.1 vs. 1.1) and was up +12% versus the year-ago week in total views (4.7 million vs. 4.2 million).
Through 46 weeks of the 2013-14 broadcast year, NBC ranks #1 among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-49, adults 25-54, adults 18-34 (tied with Fox), men 18-49, men 25-54 and all key adult-female demos. It's the first time NBC has ranked #1 in adults 18-49 at this point in the season in 10 years (since the 2003-04 season).
Versus one year ago, NBC is up +9% for the broadcast year to date in adults 18-49 (2.4 vs. 2.2).
In total viewers, NBC ranks #2 for the broadcast year with an average of 8.4 million viewers, which is its biggest overall audience 46 weeks into the season in eight years (since 2005-06, 8.9 million). Versus one year ago, NBC is up +25% season to date in total viewers (8.4 million vs. 6.7 million). It's the first time NBC has ranked #2 in total viewers at this point in the season in 10 years.
Primetime averages for the week of Aug. 4-10 in adults 18-49 are: CBS, 1.2/4; NBC, 1.1/4; ABC, 1.0/3; Fox, 0.8/3; and CW, 0.3/1. In overall total viewers, the weekly averages were: CBS, 5.8 million; NBC, 4.7 million; ABC, 4.3 million; Fox, 2.3 million; and CW, 0.9 million.
Season-to-date averages are: NBC, 2.4/8; Fox, 2.2/7; CBS, 2.1/6; ABC, 2.0/6; and CW, 0.7/2. In overall total viewers, the season averages are: CBS, 9.5 million; NBC, 8.4 million; ABC, 7.1 million; Fox, 6.5 million; and CW, 1.7 million.
NBC highlights for the week of Aug. 4-10:
Monday: NBC won Monday night in adults 18-49, as "American Ninja Warrior" tied for the #1 rating of the night in 18-49 and "Running Wild with Bear Grylls" retained 93% of the prior Monday's premiere rating.
"Running Wild with Bear Grylls" (1.3 rating, 5 share in 18-49, 4.0 million viewers overall from 8-9 p.m. ET) retained 93% of the previous week's debut 1.4 rating in 18-49 and 90% of the prior week's 4.4 million viewers overall. The 1.3 tied for the best week-two rating among the six new reality shows on the Big 4 so far this summer that have run at least two weeks (tied with NBC's "Food Fighters").
"American Ninja Warrior" (2.0/6 in 18-49, 5.6 million viewers overall from 9-11 p.m. ET) tied its highest 18-49 rating in more than two years (since the 2012 season finale on June 4, 2012) and won the two-hour time period among the Big 4 in all key demos. The 2.0 rating in 18-49 is up +43% versus an 8-9 p.m. "Ninja" telecast on the same night last year (1.4 on Aug. 5, 2013).
Tuesday: NBC won Tuesday night in total viewers among the Big 4 with the #1 show of the night in 18-49 and total viewers, "America's Got Talent."
"Food Fighters" (1.2/5 in 18-49, 4.3 million viewers overall from 8-9 p.m. ET) retained 92% of the prior week's results in both 18-49 (1.2 vs. 1.3) and total viewers (4.3 million vs. 4.7 million) and was up +20% versus the show's debut two weeks earlier in 18-49 (1.2 vs. 1.0), despite competition this week from ABC's "CMA Festival." The 1.2 rating ties ABC's "Rising Star" for the highest week-three rating among the five new reality shows on the Big 4 so far this summer that have run at least three weeks.
"America's Got Talent" (2.0/6 in 18-49, 9.0 million viewers overall from 9-11 p.m. ET) ranked as the #1 show of the night on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-49 and total viewers and won the time period versus ABC's "CMA Music Festival" in 18-49, total viewers and other key measures.
Wednesday: NBC tied for #1 for the night in adults 18-49 and won the night outright in total viewers.
An encore "America's Got Talent" (1.1/4 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall from 8-9 p.m. ET) grew from half-hour to half-hour in every key measure, including a gain of +30% in adults 18-49 (to a 1.3 rating from a 1.0).
"America's Got Talent" (2.0/7 in 18-49, 10.1 million viewers overall from 9-10:01 p.m. ET) finished #1 for the night in total viewers, won its time period by an +82% margin in 18-49 among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox (2.0 vs. 1.1 for ABC and Fox) and led the slot in every key measure among those networks. "Talent" built on its lead-in from an 8 p.m. encore by +82% in 18-49 and +67% in total viewers.
"Taxi Brooklyn" (0.9/3 in 18-49, 5.2 million viewers overall from 10:01-11 p.m. ET) finished within a tenth of a rating point of CBS's "Extant" in the 10 p.m. hour in adults 18-49 and topped "Extant" to win the hour among those nets in adults 18-34. Versus "Camp" in this time period on the same night last year, "Taxi Brooklyn" is up +48% or 1.7 million persons in total viewers (5.229 million vs. 3.526 million).
Thursday: An encore telecast of "Hollywood Game Night" (0.8/3 in 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall from 8-9:01 p.m. ET) grew in every key measure from its first half-hour to its second, including gains of +14% in adults 18-49 (to a 0.8 rating from a 0.7), +10% in adults 25-54 (1.1 vs. 1.0) and +27% in women 25-54 (1.4 vs. 1.1).
"Welcome to Sweden" delivered a 0.5/2 in 18-49 and 2.2 million viewers overall from 9:01-9:30 p.m. ET and was preempted in the Eastern U.S. at 9:29.
From 9:29-9:41 p.m. ET, NBC programming was interrupted by NBC News live coverage of President Obama's statement on Iraq.
"Working the Engels" averaged a 0.5/2 in 18-49 and 1.9 million viewers overall from 9:30-10 p.m. ET, and was preempted from 9:30-9:41 in the eastern U.S. In total viewers, "Working the Engels" retained 99% of the prior week's result (1.870 million vs. 1.880 million). In 18-49, "Engels" retained 100% of this week's lead-in, its highest retention to date.
"Last Comic Standing" (1.0/3 in 18-49, 3.4 million viewers overall from 10-11 p.m. ET) hit a seven-week high in total viewers, with its most-watched episode since June 19 (4.0 million viewers). "Last Comic" grew week to week in total viewers by +2% (3.4 million vs. 3.3 million).
Friday: A rebroadcast of "Running Wild with Bear Grylls" averaged a 0.5/2 in 18-49 and 2.1 million viewers overall from 8-9 p.m. ET.
An encore telecast of "Dateline NBC" (1.0/4 in 18-49, 5.5 million viewers overall from 9-11 p.m. ET) ranked as the #1 program of the night and in the time period among the Big 4 networks in adults 18-49 and adults 25-54. From its first half-hour to its fourth, the rebroadcast "Dateline" grew by +57% in adults 18-49 (to a 1.1 from a 0.7), +70% in adults 25-54 (1.7 vs. 1.0) and +48% or more than 1.8 million persons in total viewers (5.7 million vs. 3.8 million).
Saturday: NBC ranked #1 in primetime Saturday night among the Big 4 networks in adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and total viewers, with the #1 show of the night on those nets in 18-49, "Dateline Saturday Night Mystery" (0.7/3 in 18-49, 3.8 million viewers overall from 8-10 p.m. ET). "Dateline Saturday Night Mystery" won its two-hour time period among the Big 4 nets in every key measure.
A rebroadcast of "Law & Order: SVU" (0.5/2 in 18-49, 2.4 million viewers overall from 10-11 p.m. ET) was up from the prior week's 0.3/1 in 18-49 and 1.5 million viewers overall in this same time slot
Sunday: An encore telecast of "American Ninja Warrior" (0.8/3 in 18-49, 3.0 million viewers overall from 7-9 p.m. ET) grew +14% or a tenth of a rating point versus the show's previous Sunday encore in 18-49 (0.7 on July 27).
A rebroadcast "America's Got Talent" (0.9/3 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall from 9-11 p.m. ET) generated NBC's top 18-49 rating in the slot since June 29, excluding sports, and biggest overall audience in the time period, excluding sports, since an original "Talent" aired there on June 22.
