Continuing its competitive momentum, ABC finished No. 1 for the 4th consecutive week in Adults 18-49 (w/o 05/05/14 = 1.7/5), marking its longest winning streak in 7-1/2 years - since leading the first six weeks of the 2006-07 season. The Net has now placed No. 1 on 6 of the last 11 weeks in the key young adult sales demo, and, on average since the Winter Olympics concluded, ABC is the highest-rated TV network (Most Current data for 2/24-5/11/14): ABC (2.3/7), CBS (2.2/7), NBC (2.0/6) and Fox (1.7/5).
· ABC was up for the 2nd consecutive week in Adults 18-49 (+6% - 1.7/5 vs. 1.6/5) to deliver a 2-month high - since w/o 3/10/14.
Rankings: The Net delivered 7 of the Top 20 broadcast programs in Adults 18-49: "Modern Family" - No. 3, "Grey's Anatomy" - No. 6, "Once Upon a Time" - No. 9, "NBA Playoffs on ABC" - No. 15, while "DWTS," "S.H.I.E.L.D." and "Shark Tank" tied at No. 17. For the 8th week in a row, ABC's "Dancing" was TV's most-watched unscripted series in Total Viewers. Also for the 8th consecutive week, "DWTS" outperformed both editions of "American Idol" in Adults 18-49. ABC's "20/20" once again finished as the No. 1 newsmagazine in key Adults (AD18-49/AD25-54), leading for the 4th week running with Adults 18-49.
Monday
ABC was Monday's most-watched TV network for the 4th consecutive week, topping runner-up NBC by 9% (11.8 million vs. 10.8 million). ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" was the night's most-watched TV program overall.
"Dancing with the Stars" (8:00-10:01 p.m. - 13.1 million and 1.9/6 in AD18-49):
From 8:00-10:01 p.m., ABC's "DWTS" (13.1 million) finished as the night's most-watched TV series for the 8th week running, leading NBC's "The Voice" head to head by 2.0 million viewers (11.0 million) and Fox's premiere of "24: Live Another Day" by 5.0 million viewers (8.1 million).
"Castle" (10:01-11:00 p.m. - 9.0 million and 1.6/5 in AD18-49):
During the 10 o'clock hour, ABC's "Castle" finished as Monday's 2nd-most-watched scripted program to NBC's "The Blacklist," outdrawing Fox's highly-promoted 2-hour premiere of "24: Live Another Day" (8:00-10:00 p.m.) by 11% (9.0 million vs. 8.1 million).
Tuesday
"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." (8:00-9:01 p.m. - 5.4 million and 1.9/7 in AD18-49):
During the 8 o'clock hour, ABC's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." ranked as the No. 1 series with key Men (M18-34/M18-49). Among Men 18-34, ABC's "S.H.I.E.L.D." (1.5/6) beat NBC's "The Voice" by 50% (1.0/4) and CBS' "NCIS" by 67% (0.9/4), finishing as the No. 1 scripted series in its slot for its 21st straight original airing. The new ABC drama is Tuesday's top-rated TV show this season with key Men (M18-34/M18-49) and is the season's No. 1 broadcast drama with Men 18-34 (tied w/"The Blacklist").
Please Note: Overall Adult 18-49 TV usage in the hour was down a sharp -10% from the prior Tuesday (28.9% vs. 32.0%).
· "S.H.I.E.L.D." improved its time period by 90% in Adults 18-49 year to year, over the year-ago night with original programming (1.0/3 for "Splash" on 5/7/13).
· The ABC freshman drama gets big increases from TV playback. In the Live + 7 Day ratings for its most-recent regular original (w/o 4/7/14), "S.H.I.E.L.D." posted the series' biggest-ever jump, spiking 79% over its L+SD Adult 18-49 number (going from a 1.9 rating to a 3.4 rating).
"The Goldbergs" (9:01-9:31 p.m. - 4.2 million and 1.3/4 in AD18-49):
During the 9:00 p.m. half-hour, ABC freshman "The Goldbergs" beat Fox's season finale of "New Girl" by 1.8 million viewers (4.2 million vs. 2.4 million) and by 8% in Adults 18-49 (1.3/4 vs. 1.2/4). The ABC comedy was also very competitive with NBC's "The Voice"-led "About a Boy" in the half-hour with Adults 18-49 (1.5/4 - pacing within 2-tenths and tied in share).
"Trophy Wife" (9:31-10:00 p.m. - 2.5 million and 0.7/2 in AD18-49):
During the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, ABC freshman "Trophy Wife" tied Fox's season finale of "The Mindy Project" in Total Viewers (2.5 million).
"Celebrity Wife Swap" (10:00-11:00 p.m. - 2.8 million and 0.9/3 in AD18-49):
At 10:00 p.m., "Celebrity Wife Swap" was up 13% week to week in Adults 18-49, while gaining 33% in Adults 18-34 to earn a new season high.
Wednesday
ABC aired Wednesday's No. 1 TV program in Adults 18-49, as "Modern Family" finished as the night's highest-rated show for its 8th straight first-run telecast. On the night, ABC's "Modern Family" (2.9/9) outdelivered the top shows on each of the other nets by double-digit margins, besting CBS' "Survivor" by 21% (2.4/9), Fox's "American Idol" by 61% (1.8/6 - another all-time Wednesday low) and NBC's "Law & Order: SVU" by 93% (1.5/4).
· The Net ranked No. 1 on the night with Women 18-34.
"The Middle" (8:00-8:30 p.m. - 6.6 million and 1.6/6 in AD18-49):
At 8:00 p.m. against CBS' "Survivor" and Fox's "Idol," ABC's "The Middle" was the No. 2 TV program in the half-hour with Adults 18-49 (1.6/6), tying "American Idol."
"Suburgatory" (8:30-9:00 p.m. - 5.0 million and 1.3/4 in AD18-49):
At 8:30 p.m., "Suburgatory" beat out the second half-hour of NBC's "Revolution" by 18% in Adults 18-49 (1.3/4 vs. 1.1/4). The ABC comedy improved its half-hour year to year by 11% in Total Viewers and by 8% in Adults 18-49 (4.5 million and 1.2/3 for "Family Tools" on 5/8/13).
"Modern Family" (9:00-9:31 p.m. - 8.6 million and 2.9/9 in AD18-49):
More than doubling its Adult 18-49 lead-in at 9:00 p.m. (+123%), ABC's "Modern Family" (2.9/9) shot to the top of its half-hour, beating CBS' "Criminal Minds" by 26% (2.3/7), Fox's "American Idol" by 71% (1.7/5) and NBC's "L&O: SVU" by 107% (1.4/4).
· "Modern Family" was up week to week in Adults 18-49 (+4%) and was up in Adults 18-34 (+10%).
"Mixology" (9:31-10:00 p.m. - 3.8 million and 1.3/4 in AD18-49):
In the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, ABC's "Mixology" was even with the prior week in Adults 18-49 (1.3/4) and grew 11% in Adults 18-34 (1.0/3 vs. 0.9/3).
"Nashville" (10:00-11:00 p.m. - 4.7 million and 1.2/4 in AD18-49):
During the 10 o'clock hour against the season finale of CBS' "CSI," ABC's "Nashville" held steady week to week in Adults 18-49 and tied NBC's "Chicago PD" in audience share (1.2/4 vs. 1.4/4).
· On average, "Nashville" is ABC's highest percentage gainer this season from TV Playback and Top 3 among all broadcast series, with originals shooting up 80% from a 1.5 L+SD rating to a 2.7 Live + 7 Day Adult 18-49 rating.
· Season to date, "Nashville" is growing its overall audience from the same point in its freshman season (7.0 million vs. 6.9 million).
Thursday
With a repeat "Grey's Anatomy" at 8:00 p.m., an original "Grey's" at 9:00 p.m. and "Black Box" at 10:00 p.m., ABC finished as the No. 2 broadcaster on Thursday in Total Viewers (5.3 million) and No. 1 with Women 18-34 for the 11th week in a row. ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" was the No. 2 TV series of the night in Adults 18-49, behind only CBS' "The Big Bang Theory," and ranked No. 1 with Women 18-34 (tie).
Please Note: ESPN carried the high-rated NFL draft on the night, which was pushed back a week year to year into May, and scored record ratings.
"Grey's Anatomy" (9:00-10:00 p.m. - 7.9 million and 2.5/7 in AD18-49):
More than tripling its Adult 18-49 lead-in at 9:00 p.m. (+257%), ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" once again dominated its regular competition, beating CBS' comedies by 47% ("Two and a Half Men" finale/"Bad Teacher" = 1.7/5), Fox with "American Idol" and the "Surviving Jack" finale by 79% (1.4/4) and the first hour of NBC's "American Comedy Awards" by 150% (1.0/3). "Grey's" also led its broadcast competition in Total Viewers, Adults 18-34 and Adults 25-54. Despite the big competition from ESPN's NFL Draft, the ABC drama paced within 1-tenth of its week-ago Adult 18-49 number.
· In its 10th season, "Grey's Anatomy" is up over the same point last year in both Total Viewers (+10% - 12.1 million vs. 11.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (+7% - 4.4/2 vs. 4.1/11), delivering its highest numbers in 4 and 3 years, respectively - since the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons. In addition, "Grey's" is the 2013-14 season's No. 1 broadcast drama in Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34.
"Black Box" (10:00-11:00 p.m. - 4.6 million and 1.2/3 in AD18-49):
In the 10:00 p.m. hour, ABC's "Black Box" beat the final hour of NBC's "American Comedy Awards" by 1.3 million viewers (4.6 million vs. 3.3 million) and by 20% in Adults 18-49 (1.2/3 vs. 1.0/3). In addition, "Black Box" led its drama competition in the hour in Adults 18-34 and Women 18-34, beating CBS' "Elementary" by 14% and 50%, respectively.
Friday
Despite leading off the night with a repeat "Shark Tank" at 8:00 p.m., ABC took its 3rd straight Friday of the May Sweep in Adults 18-49, ranking No. 1 on the night for the 6th week running and beating CBS' night of season finales by 25% (1.5/5 vs. 1.2/4).
· The Net claimed the Top 2 TV series of the evening in Adults 18-49, with "Shark Tank" and "20/20," respectively. In fact this season, "Shark Tank" has finished as Friday's No. 1 TV series on 25 of its 27 original telecasts in Adults 18-49.
· For the 3rd week in a row, ABC was up over the same Friday last May Sweep in both Total Viewers (+20% - 6.1 million vs. 5.1 million) and Adults 18-49 (+7% - 1.5/5 vs. 1.4/5).
"Shark Tank - R" (8:00-9:00 p.m. - 4.7 million and 1.0/4 in AD18-49): From 8:00-9:00 p.m., ABC's repeat "Shark Tank" beat CBS' first-run "Unforgettable" by 25% in Adults 18-49 (1.0/4 vs. 0.8/2).
"Shark Tank" (9:00-10:01 p.m. - 7.4 million and 1.9/7 in AD18-49): Spiking over its lead-in by 90% at 9:00 p.m. in Adults 18-49, ABC's "Shark Tank" (1.9/7) led its hour by 46% over CBS' finale of "Hawaii Five-0" (1.3/5) and by 46% over NBC's "Grimm" (1.3/4). The show once again topped its year-ago telecast (6.2 million and 1.8/6 in AD18-49 on 5/10/13) in Total Viewers (+19%) and Adults 18-49 (+6%).
· Delivering strong year-to-year growth in Total Viewers (+16%), Adults 18-49 (+10%) and Adults 18-34 (+20%), "Shark Tank" is generating its strongest-ever season with its 3rd straight year of young adult gains.
"20/20" (10:01-11:00 p.m. - 6.3 million and 1.6/5 in AD18-49): At 10:00 p.m., ABC's "20/20" ranked No. 1 in its hour, beating CBS' "Blue Bloods" finale by 14% in Adults 18-49 (1.6/5 vs. 1.4/5), marking its 11th consecutive week as the No. 1 regular program in its time period. In addition, the ABC newsmagazine more than doubled NBC's "Hannibal" in the hour with young adults (+129% - 0.7/2). "20/20" continued its run as the No. 1 newsmagazine of the night, outdelivering NBC's "Dateline" (8:00-9:00 p.m.) in Total Viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49.
· Up season to date in Total Viewers (+23%) and Adults 25-54 (+5%), "20/20" is producing its most-watched season overall in 5 years - since the 2008-09 season.
Saturday
With coverage of the 2014 NBA Conference Semifinals (Miami Heat at Brooklyn Nets), ABC dominated Saturday in Adults 18-49, beating Fox with NASCAR coverage by 67% (2.0/8 vs. 1.2/5). ABC turned in its highest-rated Saturday in nearly 6 months with young adults - since 11/23/13.
· Airing from 8:11-11:00 p.m., the "NBA Playoffs on ABC" stood as the No. 1 TV program on Saturday among Adults 18-49 (2.0/8).
Sunday
ABC won its 3rd-straight Sunday of the May Sweep by strong margins in Adults 18-49 (1.9/6), outdelivering CBS by 46% (1.3/4), Fox by 46% (1.3/4) and NBC by 111% (0.9/3). In fact, the Net was the top-rated broadcaster in all 8 half-hours of the night. ABC's season finale of "Once Upon a Time" finished as Sunday's No. 1 broadcast program with young adults. ABC was up week to week by 6% in Adults 18-49 to deliver a 7-week high on the night - since 3/23/14.
· Posting its 3rd week of year-to-year growth, ABC was the only broadcaster up from the year-ago May Sweep Sunday in Adults 18-49 (+12% - 1.9/6 vs. 1.7/5).
"America's Funniest Home Videos" (7:00-8:00 p.m. - 6.1 million and 1.6/6 in AD18-49):
During the 7 o'clock hour, ABC's "America's Funniest Home Videos" won its time period for the 3rd week in a row among Adults 18-49 (1.6/6) and was up 14% from its year-ago telecast (1.4/5 on 5/12/13).
"Once Upon a Time" (8:00-10:01 p.m. - 6.8 million and 2.3/7 in AD18-49):
ABC's 2-hour season finale of "Once Upon a Time" beat out its nearest broadcast competition in each hour by double digits in Adults 18-49, leading by 26% from 8:00-9:00 p.m. (2.4/8 vs. 1.9/6 for Fox's "The Simpsons"/"Family Guy") and increasing its advantage to 83% from 9:00-10:00 p.m. (2.2/6 vs. 1.2/4 for CBS' "The Good Wife"). In Adults 18-49, the ABC drama qualified as the No. 1 series in its regular 8:00-9:00 p.m. slot on each of its final 10 telecasts this season.
· "Once Upon a Time" was up 10% week to week in Adults 18-49 to hit a 5-week high - since 4/6/14.
"Revenge" (10:01-11:00 p.m. - 4.9 million and 1.4/4 in AD18-49):
During the 10:00 p.m. hour, ABC's season finale of "Revenge" was the No. 1 series in its slot for the 3rd week running with Adults 18-49, outpacing CBS' "The Mentalist" by 17% (1.4/4 vs. 1.2/4).
· Building week to week by 8% in Adults 18-49, "Revenge" posted its highest number since March - since 3/30/14. In addition the show spiked 38% with Adults 18-34 to score a 7-week high - since 3/23/14.
