During the week of January 13, 2014, ABC delivered 4 of the Top 20 non-sports TV programs in Adults 18-49: "Modern Family" - No. 6 (No. 1 comedy), "The Bachelor" - No. 15, "S.H.I.E.L.D." - No. 16 and "Shark Tank" - No. 19 (series-high). Hitting season-highs on Friday, ABC's "20/20" was the week's No. 1 newsmagazine in Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54.
Monday
With "The Bachelor" and "Castle," ABC finished as Monday's No. 1 TV network in Total Viewers (8.3 million), Adults 18-49 (2.1/6-tie), Adults 18-34 and key Women (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54).
"The Bachelor" (8:00-10:01 p.m. - 8.0 million and 2.3/6 in AD18-49):
From 8:00-10:01 p.m., ABC's "The Bachelor" dominated its unscripted competition in the 2-hour time period, beating NBC's "American Ninja Warrior" by 2.5 million viewers (8.0 million vs. 5.5 million) and by 21% in Adults 18-49 (2.3/6 vs. 1.9/5). The ABC unscripted series won its slot in Adults 18-34, stood was Monday's No. 1 TV show in key Women (W18-34/W18-49) and was the night's most social broadcast program with 173,000 tweets. "The Bachelor" grew 7% over its year-ago telecast in Total Viewers (8.0 million vs. 7.5 million on 1/14/13).
"Castle" (10:01-11:00 p.m. - 9.0 million and 1.9/5 in AD18-49):
During the 10 o'clock hour, ABC's "Castle" beat out CBS' time-period premiere of "Intelligence" by wide margins in Total Viewers (+45% - 9.0 million vs. 6.2 million) and Adults 18-49 (+58% - 1.9/5 vs. 1.2/3). In addition, the ABC drama ranked No. 1 in the hour in Women 18-34 (tie). "Castle" was up week to week in Total Viewers (+2%) and Adults 18-49 (+12%).
Tuesday
"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." (8:00-9:01 p.m. - 6.4 million and 2.2/6 in AD18-49):
During the 8 o'clock hour, ABC's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." (2.2/6) took second place in its slot to CBS' top-rated "NCIS" among Adults 18-49, outdelivering NBC's "The Biggest Loser" by 38% (1.6/5) and Fox's comedies by 69% ("Dads"/"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" = 1.3/4). In addition, the ABC freshman drama led its slot by 50% over "NCIS" in Men 18-34 (1.8/6 vs. 1.2/5) to hold the No. 1 series position in the hour for its 12th consecutive original airing. It also stood as the No. 1 TV show on Tuesday with Men 18-34 and the top-rated broadcast program with Teens 12-17.
· "S.H.I.E.L.D." held steady week to week in Adults 18-49 and gained 5% in Women 18-49 for its best number since November - since 11/26/13.
· Based on Nielsen's Live + 7 Day ratings for original airings (9/23-12/29/13), ABC's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is Tuesday's No. 1 TV show this season in Adults 18-49 (4.6 rating), leading NBC's "The Voice" by 2% (4.5 rating) and CBS' "NCIS" by 12% (4.1 rating).
"The Goldbergs" (9:01-9:31 p.m. - 4.9 million and 1.8/5 in AD18-49):
In the 9:00 p.m. half-hour, ABC's "The Goldbergs" grew for its 3rd consecutive first-run airing in Adults 18-49 (+6%) to deliver a 14-week high - since 10/8/13. For the 2nd week in row, the ABC freshman comedy defeated Fox's "New Girl" (3.2 million and 1.6/4) in the half-hour in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 to stand as Tuesday's No. 1 comedy.
· "The Goldbergs" once again delivered big time-period improvement year to year, growing the half-hour by 58% in Total Viewers and 38% in Adults 18-49 over original comedy programming on the year-ago night ("Happy Endings" = 3.1 million and 1.3/3 on 01/15/13).
"Trophy Wife" (9:31-10:00 p.m. - 3.5 million and 1.1/3 in AD18-49):
In the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, ABC's "Trophy Wife" topped Fox's "Mindy Project" head-to-head by 1.0 million viewers (3.5 million vs. 2.5 million). The show held even week to week in Adults 18-49.
· "Trophy Wife" boosted its half-hour year to year by 30% in Total Viewers, topping original comedy programming on the same night last year ("B---- in Apt 23" = 2.7 million and 1.1/3 on 01/15/13).
Wednesday
Opposite Fox's season premiere of "American Idol" on Wednesday, ABC ranked No. 2 (tied w/CBS) and outdelivered NBC's original line-up on the night by 29% in Adults 18-49 (1.8/5 vs. 1.4/4).
"The Middle" (8:00-8:30 p.m. - 7.5 million and 1.8/6 in AD18-49):
At 8:00 p.m., "The Middle" took second to "American Idol" in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.
"Suburgatory" (8:30-9:00 p.m. - 5.3 million and 1.6/5 in AD18-49):
Retaining a solid 89% of its lead-in at 8:30 p.m., ABC's season premiere of "Suburgatory" took second in its time period with a 33% advantage over NBC's "Revolution" in Adults 18-49 (1.6/5 vs. 1.2/4). Despite opening against "Idol," "Suburgatory" improved its slot week to week by 7% in Adults 18-49 with the Net's best number in the half-hour since November - since 11/20/13.
"Modern Family" (9:00-9:31 p.m. - 9.1 million and 3.2/9 in AD18-49):
At 9:00 p.m., ABC's "Modern Family" finished as Wednesday's dominant No. 1 scripted TV show in Adults 18-49, leading runner-up CBS' "Criminal Minds" by 33% (3.2/9 vs. 2.4/7).
"Super Fun Night" (9:31-10:00 p.m. - 4.4 million and 1.5/4 in AD18-49):
In the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, despite increased competition against the final segment of "Idol," "Super Fun Night" paced within 2-tenths of a rating point week to week in Adults 18-49.
"Nashville" (10:00-11:00 p.m. - 5.1 million and 1.3/4 in AD18-49):
In the 10 o'clock hour, ABC's "Nashville" returned within 1-tenth of rating point in Adults 18-49 from its last original telecast 5 weeks ago (1.4/4 on 12/11/13). Season to date, "Nashville" is up by 9% in Total Viewers (8.6 million vs. 7.9 million) and by 4% in Adults 18-49 (2.8/8 vs. 2.7/7) over the same point last season.
Thursday
"The Taste" (8:00-10:00 p.m. - 3.3 million and 0.9/3 in AD18-49):
Opposite the 2-hour Thursday premiere of Fox's "American Idol" from 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC's "The Taste" built by 11% from its first hour to its second hour in Adults 18-49 (0.9/3 to 1.0/3). In fact, during the 9 o'clock hour, "The Taste" dominated NBC's comedies ("Sean Saves the World"/"The Michael J. Fox Show") by 43% in Adults 18-49 (1.0/3 vs. 0.7/2).
"Shark Tank-R" (10:00-11:00 p.m. - 3.6 million and 1.2/4 in AD18-49):
Building on its lead-in by 33% at 10:00 p.m., ABC's repeat "Shark Tank" ranked as the No. 1 broadcast in the hour, tying NBC's first-run "Parenthood" (1.2/4) and beating CBS' encore "Elementary" by 20% (1.0/3).
· "Shark Tank" improved the hour by 100% week to week in Adults 18-49, hitting a 1-month high - since 12/19/13.
Friday
ABC won Friday among Adults 18-49 for the 2nd week in a row, leading runner-up CBS by 13% (1.7/5 vs. 1.5/5). Matching last week's season high on the night, the Net equaled a 14-month Friday night high in Adults 18-49 - since 11/9/12. In fact, in the last 2 weeks, ABC has delivered the highest-rated non-sports Friday nights on any net this season among young adults.
· ABC's "Shark Tank" (2.1/7) and 20/20 (1.7/5) finished as the Top 2 TV programs of the night for the 2nd straight week in Adults 18-49. Also for the 2nd week running, "Shark Tank" tied a series high for a regular telecast and "20/20" matched its season high set last week. ABC's "20/20" continued to rank as the top-rated newsmagazine of the night, outdelivering NBC's "Dateline" (8:00-9:00 p.m.) by double-digits in Adults 18-49 (+13% - 1.7/5 vs. 1.5/5) and Adults 25-54 (+15% - 2.3/6 vs. 2.0/6).
· "Shark Tank" has now delivered Friday's Top 11 non-sports telecasts this season among Adults 18-49 in L+SD.
"Last Man Standing" (8:00-8:31 p.m. - 6.2 million and 1.4/5 in AD18-49):
ABC's "Last Man Standing" paced within 1-tenth of an Adult 18-49 rating point of last week's season high (1.4/5 vs. 1.5/5) to match its 2nd-best rating since its season premiere 4 months ago - since 9/20/13.
"Shark Tank" (9:00-10:01 p.m. - 7.4 million and 2.1/6 in AD18-49): Spiking 133% over its lead-in at 9:00 p.m. in Adults 18-49, ABC's "Shark Tank" convincingly won the hour by 40% over its nearest competition (2.1/7 vs. 1.5/5 - CBS' "Hawaii Five-0" and NBC's "Grimm" tied). Season to date, "Shark Tank" has grown 15% in Adults 18-49 over the same point last year, trending as the series' best-ever season.
"20/20" (10:01-11:00 p.m. - 6.6 million and 1.7/5 in AD18-49): ABC's "20/20" won the 10 o'clock hour for the 2nd consecutive week in Adults 18-49 (1.7/5), beating CBS' "Blue Bloods" by 21% (1.4/5) and NBC's "Dracula" by 89% (0.9/3). The ABC newsmagazine also ranked No. 1 in the hour with Adults 25-54 (2.3/6-tie). "20/20" reported on imperfect getaways, from airplane blunders and luggage mishaps to going overboard at sea and hotel hazards. In addition to matching season-best numbers, "20/20" also tied its highest rating among Adults 18-49 since April 2013 and with Adults 25-54 since September 2012 - since 4/5/13 and 9/14/12.
· Growing for the 2nd year in a row, "20/20" is up 16% in Total Viewers season to date and is tracking to deliver its most-watched season in 4 years - since the 2009-10 season.
Saturday
"20/20-Saturday-1/18" (10:00-11:00 p.m. - 4.2 million and 0.9/3 in AD18-49):
During the 10 o'clock hour, ABC's "20/20-Saturday" ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers and key Adults (AD18-49/AD25-54), topping CBS' competing newsmagazine in the hour ("48 Hours") by 40% in Viewers (4.2 million vs. 3.0 million), 80% in Adults 18-49 (0.9/3 vs. 0.5/2) and 63% in Adults 25-54 (1.3/3 vs. 0.8/2). Up over its last telecast on 8/10/13 (from 9:00-11:00 p.m.) by double-digits in Total Viewers (+62%), Adults 18-49 (+80%) and Adults 25-54 (+86%), "20/20-Saturday" hit 10-month highs in all three Nielsen measures - since 3/23/13.
