During the week of January 6, 2014, ABC aired 5 of the Top 20 non-sports TV programs in Adults 18-49: "Modern Family" - No. 4 (No. 2 scripted TV show), "The Bachelor" - No. 7 (3-year high for a premiere), "S.H.I.E.L.D." (Up over its last original) and "The Middle" (Top rating since November) tied at No. 14 and "Shark Tank" - No. 17 (Hit a new season-high). In addition, ABC's "The Bachelor" and
"Shark Tank" stood as TV's Top 2 unscripted series in Adults 18-49.
· ABC grew for the 2nd week in Total Viewers (+2% - 5.2 million vs. 5.1 million) and Adults 18-49 (+8% - 1.4/4 vs. 1.3/4) to earn its best numbers in 1 month - since w/o 12/9/13.
Monday
Featuring the 2-hour season premiere of "The Bachelor" leading into "Castle," opposite ESPN's down-to-the-wire BCS Championship game, ABC was the definitive No. 1 broadcaster on Monday (8.7 million and 2.4/6), leading all 6 half-hours in viewers and young adults. "The Bachelor" was Monday's No. 1 TV series overall. ABC posted a Monday season-high in Adults 18-49.
· The Net was up from the year-ago night with an all-original line up (7.5 million and 2.2/5 on 1/7/13) by 16% in Total Viewers and by 9% in Adults 18-49.
"The Bachelor" (8:00-10:01 p.m. - 8.7 million and 2.7/7 in AD18-49):
Dominating its non-sports competition in its time period to rank as Monday's No. 1 TV series, ABC's season opener of "The Bachelor" spiked by double-digits year to year in Total Viewers (+26% - 8.7 million vs. 6.9 million) and Adults 18-49 (+17% - 2.7/7 vs. 2.3/6) to deliver 3-year-highs on both measures - since 1/3/11. In addition, the show delivered a season-high for ABC in the 2-hour time period among Adults 18-49.
"Castle" (10:01-11:00 p.m. - 8.8 million and 1.7/4 in AD18-49):
The No. 1 series in the 10 o'clock hour, ABC's "Castle" towered over the final hour of CBS' 2-hour "Hostages" finale in Total Viewers (+87% - 8.8 million vs. 4.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (+70% - 1.7/4 vs. 1.0/3).
Tuesday
"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." (8:00-9:01 p.m. - 6.6 million and 2.2/6 in AD18-49):
Coming back to original for the first time in 4 weeks, ABC's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." (2.2/6) earned second place in the 8:00 p.m. hour to CBS' top-rated "NCIS" among Adults 18-49, leading NBC's "The Biggest Loser" by 38% (1.6/5) and Fox's comedies by 47% ("Dads"/"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" = 1.5/4). In addition, the ABC freshman drama was the No. 1 series in its time period with Men 18-34 for its 11th consecutive first-run broadcast.
· "S.H.I.E.L.D." was up over its most recent original (on 12/10/13) in Total Viewers (+8% - 6.6 million vs. 6.1 million) and Adults 18-49 (+5% - 2.2/6 vs. 2.1/6). In addition, the show spiked 16% in Adults 18-34 from its last original.
· Season to date in Nielsen's Live + 7 Day ratings for original airings (9/23-12/22/13), ABC's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is Tuesday's No. 1 TV show this season in Adults 18-49 (4.6 rating), leading NBC's "The Voice" by 2% (4.5 rating) and CBS' "NCIS" by 12% (4.1 rating).
"The Goldbergs" (9:00-9:31 p.m. - 5.3 million and 1.7/5 in AD18-49):
In the 9:00 p.m. half-hour, ABC's "The Goldbergs" returned up 10% in Total Viewers and 6% from its last original in Adults 18-49 to its best numbers since October and November, respectively - since 10/29/13 and 11/12/13, respectively. Beating Fox's "New Girl" (3.2 million and 1.6/4) head-to-head in the half-hour, the ABC freshman was Tuesday's No. 1 comedy in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.
· "The Goldbergs" continued to grow its time period year to year, boosting the half-hour by 43% in Total Viewers and 21% in Adults 18-49 over original comedy programming on the year-ago night ("Happy Endings" = 3.7 million and 1.4/4 on 01/08/13).
"Trophy Wife" (9:31-10:00 p.m. - 3.8 million and 1.1/3 in AD18-49):
In the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, ABC's "Trophy Wife" was up 9% in Total Viewers to draw its biggest audience since October - since 10/29/13.
· Like its lead-in, "Trophy Wife" improved its half-hour year to year, topping original comedy programming on the same night last year by 23% in Total Viewers and held even in Adults 18-49 ("B---- in Apt 23" = 3.1 million and 1.1/3 on 01/08/13).
"Killer Women" (10:00-11:00 p.m. - 4.0 million and 0.9/2 in AD18-49):
Building 5% on its Total Viewer lead-in at 10:00 p.m., ABC's debut of "Killer Women" drew ABC's biggest audience with an original series in the hour in 14 weeks - since 9/24/13.
Wednesday
ABC Wednesday Comedy Block (8:00-10:00 p.m. - 7.0 million and 2.2/6 in AD18-49):
ABC's 8:00-10:00 p.m. Wednesday comedies returned to originals for the first time in 4 weeks (since 12/11/13) to win the 2-hour time period in Adults 18-49, leading runner-up CBS by 10% (2.2/6 vs. 2.0/6). The Net aired an encore of "David Blaine: Real or Magic" in the 10 o'clock hour (3.8 million and 1.4/4).
· ABC's "Modern Family" was Wednesday's dominant No. 1 TV program in Adults 18-49 by 46% over No. 2 CBS' "People's Choice Awards" (3.5/10 vs. 2.4/7), standing as the night's top-rated series on each original airing this season.
"The Middle" (8:00-8:30 p.m. - 8.8 million and 2.2/7 in AD18-49):
At 8:00 p.m., "The Middle" dominated its half-hour and returned up over its last original in Total Viewers (+8%) and Adults 18-49 (+10%) to its biggest audience in 8 weeks and its best young adult number in 7 weeks - since 11/13/13 and 11/20/13, respectively.
"Super Fun Night" (8:30-9:00 p.m. - 4.9 million and 1.5/4 in AD18-49):
At 8:30 p.m., a special airing of "Super Fun Night" held even with ABC's last original comedy telecast in the half-hour in Adults 18-49. Please Note: "Suburgatory" will have its season premiere in the time period next week (1/15/14).
"Modern Family" (9:00-9:31 p.m. - 9.5 million and 3.5/10 in AD18-49):
More than doubling its lead-in at 9:00 p.m. (+133%) to win its half-hour by 46% in Adults 18-49 over CBS' "People's Choice Awards" (3.5/10 vs. 2.4/7), "Modern Family" held even with its last original in Adults 18-49 to equal an 8-week high - since 11/13/13.
"Super Fun Night" (9:31-10:00 p.m. - 4.7 million and 1.7/5 in AD18-49):
In the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, "Super Fun Night" paced within 1-tenth of a rating point of its most recent first-run airing in Adults 18-49.
Thursday
"The Taste" (8:00-10:00 p.m. - 4.5 million and 1.3/4 in AD18-49):
From 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC's "The Taste" retained 100% of its week-earlier premiere Adult 18-49 rating and grew over its opener by 13% in Adults 18-34. Head-to-head in its time slot, the ABC unscripted series beat out NBC's original 2-hour comedy block for the 2nd week in a row ("Community"/"Parks and Recreation"/"Sean Saves the World"/"Michael J Fox Show" = 3.3 million and 1.2/3). The program built 8% in Adults 18-49 from its first hour to its second hour.
Friday
Returning to an all original line-up on the night for the first time in 4 weeks (since 12/13/13), ABC won Friday among Adults 18-49 by 31% over runner-up CBS (1.7/5 vs. 1.3/4). Growing 13% among young adults over its last all original line-up to post a new season high, ABC matched a 14-month high on the night - since 11/9/12.
· ABC's "Shark Tank" (2.1/6) and "20/20" (1.7/5) stood as the Top 2 TV programs of the night in Adults 18-49, as both shows delivered new season highs. The Net claimed the Top 2 highest-rated sitcoms on the night among young adults with "Last Man Standing" (1.5/5) and "The Neighbors" (1.1/4).
· Including last night, "Shark Tank" has delivered Friday's Top 10 non-sports telecasts this season among Adults 18-49 in L+SD.
"Last Man Standing" (8:00-8:31 p.m. - 7.2 million and 1.5/5 in AD18-49):
Ranking No. 1 in the 8:00 p.m. half-hour, "Last Man Standing" returned up 25% in Adults 18-49 from its most recent original 4 weeks ago (12/13/13). The ABC comedy drew its biggest audience this season and matched a season-best among young adults.
"The Neighbors" (8:31-9:00 p.m. - 4.8 million and 1.1/4 in AD18-49):
At 8:30 p.m., "The Neighbors" surged 22% in Adults 18-49 from its last original. "The Neighbors" delivered its most-watched telecast this season and posted a best-since-premiere number with young adults.
"Shark Tank" (9:00 -10:01 p.m. - 7.4 million and 2.1/6 in AD18-49):
Nearly doubling its lead-in at 9:00 p.m. in Adults 18-49 (+91%), ABC's "Shark Tank" dominated the 9 o'clock hour by 31% over its nearest competition (2.1/6 vs. 1.6/5 - CBS' "Hawaii Five-0"). The ABC unscripted series grew 5% from its most recent original in Adults 18-49 to earn its highest rating since early April - since 4/5/13. In fact, the show matched its best-ever rating for a regular telecast. Season to date, "Shark Tank" is up 15% in Adults 18-49 over the same point last year, trending as the series' strongest season ever.
"20/20" (10:01-11:00 p.m. - 6.7 million and 1.7/5 in AD18-49):
ABC's "20/20" won the 10 o'clock hour in Adults 18-49 (1.7/5), beating CBS' "Blue Bloods" by 13% (1.5/5) and more than doubling NBC's "Dracula" (+143% - 0.7/2). "20/20" reported on the pressures and sometimes deadly decisions of teenagers. In fact, it stood as Friday's highest-rated news telecast this season with young adults. "20/20" was up by double-digits week to week Total Viewers (+10%), Adults 18-49 (+13%) and Adults 25-54 (+15%). The ABC newsmagazine drew its biggest audience in 10 weeks (since 11/1/13), while hitting a new season best in Adults 18-49 and matching a season high in Adults 25-54 (2.3/6).
Sunday
"Revenge" (9:00-10:01 p.m. - 5.7 million and 1.6/4 in AD18-49):
Jumping 60% over lead-in against the "Golden Globes" at 9:00 p.m., ABC's "Revenge" outdelivered its November-December L+SD average for originals in Adults 18-49 (+7% - 1.6/4 vs. 1.5/4).
"Betrayal" (10:01-11:00 p.m. - 2.7 million and 0.8/2 in AD18-49):
During the 10 o'clock hour, ABC's "Betrayal" was up 14% week to week among Adults 18-49 (0.8/2 vs. 0.7/2).
