UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - October 22, 2013 - NBC has finished #1 in adults 18-49 for week four of the 2013-14 primetime season and has now won the opening four weeks of the season for a second year in a row. According to "live plus same day" viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research, NBC averaged a 3.0 rating, 9 share in adults 18-49 and 9.4 million viewers overall for the week of Oct. 14-20.
NBC's 3.0 rating for the week is up 15% versus the network's 2.6 for the same week last year (and is up 43% versus NBC's 2.1 for week four two years ago). The 3.0 is also NBC's highest week-four rating in six years (since a 3.1 in 2007). The 9.4 million is NBC's biggest week-four overall audience in seven years (since 10.3 million in 2006).
Through four weeks of the new season, NBC is up 3% vs. one year ago in 18-49 (3.2 vs. 3.1) to its highest four-week average in six years (since 2007, 3.5).
NBC is leading the season by 0.6 of a point (3.2 vs. CBS's 2.6), the biggest margin in 11 years for any net four weeks into the season (since NBC led by 0.8 of a point in 2002). On a percentage basis, NBC's 23% margin is the biggest lead for any net at four weeks in 12 years (since NBC led by +27% in 2001). NBC is also leading the season among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in all other key demographics.
In total viewers, NBC finished week four in second place, and is also #2 for the season, its highest total-viewer ranking four weeks into the season in 11 years (since 2002).
NBC's season average of 9.9 million viewers is its biggest overall audience four weeks into the season in seven years (since 2006, 10.3 million). Versus one year ago, NBC is up 17% season to date in total viewers (9.9 million vs. 8.4 million).
For the week, NBC delivered three of the top five primetime telecasts on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-49: "Sunday Night Football" (#1), Monday's "The Voice" (#3) and Tuesday's "Voice" (#5). Rankings exclude sports pre- and post-game shows. Also ranking among the top 25 primetime programs on the Big 4 were "The Blacklist" (#11), "The Biggest Loser" (tied for #22) and "Chicago Fire" (tied for #22).
"Sunday Night Football" was also #1 among primetime telecasts on the Big 4 last week in adults, men and women 18-34; men and women 18-49; adults and men 25-54; and teens 12-17, while "The Voice" accounted for the top entertainment telecast on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in teens 12-17, women 18-49 (tie) and women 18-34. .
NBC won the week among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in all key demographic categories - adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54.
Primetime averages for the week of Oct. 14-20 in adults 18-49 are: NBC, 3.0/9; CBS, 2.2/6; ABC, 1.9/6; Fox, 1.8/5; and CW, 0.8/2. In overall total viewers, the weekly averages were: CBS, 10.2 million; NBC, 9.4 million; ABC, 7.0 million; Fox, 6.1 million; and CW, 1.9 million.
NBC highlights for the week of Oct. 14-20:
Monday: "The Voice" and "The Blacklist" led NBC to the nightlong Monday win among ABC, CBS, NBC & Fox in all key categories for a fourth week in a row, winning six of six half-hours in 18-49 among those nets, also for a fourth week in a row. NBC won the night among the Big 4 by a 74% margin in 18-49 (with a 4.0 rating vs. a 2.3 for #2 Fox).
"The Voice" (4.5 rating, 12 share in adults 18-49, 13.8 million viewers overall from 8-10:01 p.m. ET) won the time period among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in every key ratings category. "The Voice" was #1 for the night on those networks in 18-49, total viewers and other key categories. From its first half-hour to its fourth "The Voice grew by 28% or 1.1 rating points in adults 18-49 (to a 5.0 from a 3.9) and by 20% or 2.5 million persons in total viewers (15.0 million vs. 12.5 million).
"The Blacklist" (3.0/8 in adults 18-49, 10.9 million viewers overall from 10:01-11 p.m. ET) finished #1 in the hour among ABC, CBS and NBC in every key demographic, with an adult 18-49 margin of 36% versus ABC's #2 "Castle" (3.0 vs. 2.2). Versus NBC's averages in the slot last season, "The Blacklist" was up 50% in 18-49 (3.0 vs. 2.0, L+SD non-sports) and up 90% in total viewers (10.9 million vs. 5.7 million).
"Live Plus Three Day": "The Blacklist" added 49% or 1.50 of a point to its next-day "live plus same day" 18-49 rating (to a 4.54 in L+3 from a 3.04 in L+SD) and in total viewers, added 38% or 4.138 million persons (15.066 million vs. 10.928 million). In L+3, "Blacklist" was up slightly week to week in 18-49 (to a 4.54 from the prior week's 4.53).
"Live Plus Seven Day": The Sept. 30 episode of "The Blacklist" set a new record for biggest "live plus seven day" lift, becoming the first broadcast network show to add more than 6 million viewers when going from its "live plus same day" audience to its "live plus seven day" result. The Sept. 30 telecast of "Blacklist" averaged 17.858 million viewers in L+7 figures, an increase of 6.504 million or 57% versus its 11.354 million in L+SD. That 6.504 million lift tops the previous record set the prior week by CBS's "Big Bang Theory" (5.705 million). Week two of "The Blacklist" retained 98% of its premiere-week viewership in L+7 (17.858 million vs. 18.279 million). This episode of "The Blacklist" also set the record for biggest jump from L+SD to "live plus three day," 5.081 million viewers, and was the first broadcast show to grow by 5 million viewers or more in L+3. In adults 18-49, week two of "The Blacklist" rose from a 3.29 rating in "live plus same day" to a 5.49 in "live plus seven day," a lift of 2.20 rating points or 67%. Week two of "The Blacklist" retained 100% of its premiere rating in "live plus seven day" 18-49 results (5.49 in week two vs. 5.49 in week one, L+7) and is the only debuting series so far this season to maintain its 18-49 rating from week one to week two in L+7.
Tuesday: NBC won Tuesday in 18-49 and has for the first time in eight years claimed each of the first four Tuesdays of the season in 18-49 among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox.
"The Biggest Loser" (2.3/7 in 18-49, 7.2 viewers overall from 8-9 p.m.) beat the total-viewer delivery of the debuts of the prior three cycles, including growth of 12% versus last year's regular-slot premiere (7.2 million vs. 6.4 million on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013). In 18-49 rating, "Loser" ran within 0.1 of a point of that year-ago regular-slot premiere. "Biggest Loser" led its time period last week among the Big 4 in women 18-34 and grew half-hour to half-hour in every key measure.
"The Biggest Loser" matched its most recent fall premiere in 18-49 rating (2.3 vs. 2.3 on Sept. 20, 2011) and was up 5% versus the finale of the Spring 2012 cycle, its most recent previous Tuesday telecast (2.3 vs. 2.2 on May 1, 2012).
"The Voice" (4.0/11 in 18-49, 13.0 million viewers overall from 9-10:01 p.m. ET) was the #1 show of the night in 18-49, growing by 33% versus the prior week's recap episode in 18-49 (4.0 vs. 3.0) and 27% in total viewers (13.0 million vs. 10.2 million), while running within 11% of its prior Tuesday non-recap telecast in both 18-49 (4.5 from 8-10:01 on October 1) and total viewers (13.0 million vs. 14.5 million). "The Voice" was #1 in the time period in adults 18-49 and all other key demographics.
"Chicago Fire" (2.3/7 in 18-49, 8.2 million viewers overall from 10:01-11 p.m. ET) grew week to week by 10% in 18-49 (2.3 vs. 2.1) and 9% in total viewers (8.1 million vs. 7.4 million) to rank #1 in the 10 p.m. hour among ABC, CBS and NBC in 18-49 and other key demos. "Chicago Fire" was up 44% versus the show's year-ago fourth episode in 18-49 rating (1.6 on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012) and up 44% in total viewers (8.1 million vs. 5.6 million).
L+3: "Chicago Fire" added 41% or 0.96 of a point to its next-day "live plus same day" 18-49 rating (to a 3.28 in L+3 from a 2.32 in L+SD) and in total viewers, added 34% or 2.775 million persons (10.857 million vs. 8.082 million). L+7: In week 2, "Chicago Fire" added 48% or 1.26 rating points to its L+SD 18-49 rating (3.90 vs. 2.64) and in total viewers, added 42% or 3.649 million persons (12.392 million vs. 8.743 million).
Wednesday: "Revolution" (1.4/4 in 18-49, 5.4 million viewers overall from 8-9 p.m. ET) finished within a tenth of a point of the prior week's 18-49 rating and versus NBC's time-period result for the same night last year, "Revolution" was up by 8% in 18-49 (1.4 vs. 1.3) and 31% in total viewers (5.4 million vs. 4.1 million).
L+3: "Revolution" added 52% or 0.75 of a point to its next-day "live plus same day" 18-49 rating (to a 2.20 in L+3 from a 1.45 in L+SD) and in total viewers, added 35% or 1.882 million persons (7.299 million vs. 5.417 million. In L+3, "Revolution" was up slightly week to week in 18-49 (2.20 vs. 2.18). L+7: In week 2, "Revolution" added 68% or 1.06 of a point to its L+SD 18-49 rating (2.63 vs. 1.57) and in total viewers, added 51% or 2.777 million persons (8.238 million vs. 5.461 million).
"Law & Order: SVU" (1.8/5 in 18-49, 7.5 million viewers overall from 9-10:01 p.m. ET) grew 13% week to week in 18-49 (to a 1.8 from a 1.6) and 18% in total viewers (7.479 million vs. 6.312 million) to a three-week total-viewer high. From its first half-hour to its second, "SVU" grew in every key ratings category, including gains of 19% in 18-49 rating (to a 1.9 from a 1.6) and 24% in adults 25-54 (2.6 vs. 2.1).
L+3: "Law & Order: SVU" added 38% or 0.68 of a point to its next-day "live plus same day" 18-49 rating (to a 2.48 in L+3 from a 1.80 in L+SD) and in total viewers, added 26% or 1.920 million persons (9.399 million vs. 7.479 million). L+7: For week 2, "Law & Order: SVU" added 45% or 0.89 rating points to its L+SD 18-49 rating (2.88 vs. 1.99) and in total viewers, added 38% or 2.607 million persons (9.459 million vs. 6.852 million).
"Ironside" (1.0/3 in adults 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall from 10:01-11 p.m. ET) finished within a tenth of a rating point of the prior week's 1.1 rating, and is the first new drama on the Big 4 to rate within a tenth of a point of its week 2 rating in week 3. "Ironside" is also the first new drama on those nets to finish within 0.3 of a point of its premiere rating in week 3 (1.0 vs. 1.3).
L+3: "Ironside" added 26% or 0.26 of a point to its next-day "live plus same day" 18-49 rating (to a 1.30 in L+3 from a 1.04 in L+SD) and in total viewers, added 26% or 1.267 million persons (6.069 million vs. 4.802 million). L+7: In week 2, the premiere of "Ironside" added 38% or 0.51 rating points to its L+SD 18-49 rating (1.85 vs. 1.34) and in total viewers, added 35% or 2.378 million persons (9.192 million vs. 6.814 million).
Thursday: "Parks and Recreation" (1.3/4 in 18-49, 3.3 million viewers overall from 8-8:31 p.m. ET) is up week to week by 8% in 18-49 rating (1.3 vs. 1.2), making this a three-week high and matching the show's season premiere as the "Parks" season high. This week's 3.3 million in total viewers is also a three-week high. L+3: The prior week's "Parks and Recreation" added 36% or 0.43 of a point to its next-day "live plus same day" 18-49 rating (to a 1.63 in L+3 from a 1.20 in L+SD) and 22% or 698,000 persons in total viewers (3.926 million vs. 3.228 million). L+7: In week 2, "Parks and Recreation" added 45% or 0.55 rating points to its L+SD 18-49 rating (1.77 vs. 1.22) and in total viewers, added 29% or 928,000 persons (4.078 million vs. 3.150 million).
Upscale: "Parks and Recreation" is the most upscale primetime series on the Big 4 networks in its concentration of adults 18-49 living in homes with $100K+ incomes, indexing in that category at a 171 (with 100 representing an average concentration of those homes). The #2 show in the category, ABC's "Modern Family," is currently indexing at a 159.
"Welcome to the Family" (0.9/3 in 18-49, 2.4 million viewers overall from 8:31-9:01 p.m. ET) is up week to week by 13% in 18-49 (0.9 vs. 0.8). L+3: The prior week's "Welcome to the Family" added 17% or 0.14 of a rating point to its next-day L+SD 18-49 rating (to a 0.95 from a 0.81) and 14% or 348,000 persons in total viewers (2.839 million vs. 2.491 million). L+7: In week 2, the debut of "Welcome to the Family" added 18% or 0.20 rating points to its L+SD 18-49 rating (1.31 vs. 1.11) and in total viewers, added 18% or 542,000 persons (3.541 million vs. 2.999 million).
"Sean Saves the World" (1.1/3 in 18-49, 3.4 million viewers overall from 9:01-9:31 p.m. ET) grew week to week by a tenth of a rating point or 10% in 18-49 (1.1 vs. 1.0) and by 3% in total viewers (3.4 million vs. 3.3 million). "Sean" built by 22% on its lead-in in 18-49 and by 39% in total viewers. L+3: The prior week's "Sean Saves the World" added 34% or 0.35 of a rating point to its next-day L+SD 18-49 rating (to a 1.37 from a 1.02) and 25% or 828,000 persons in total viewers (4.085 million vs. 3.257 million). L+7: In week 2, the premiere of "Sean Saves the World" added 24% or 0.35 rating points to its L+SD 18-49 rating (1.78 vs. 1.43) and in total viewers, added 22% or 994,000 persons (5.422 million vs. 4.428 million).
"The Michael J. Fox Show" (1.2/3 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall from 9:31-10:01 p.m. ET) matched its week-ago 18-49 rating and built by 9% on its lead-in. "Michael J. Fox" is delivering the biggest average build on its regular lead-in (+17%, 1.4 vs. 1.2, L+SD) of any 9:30 comedy on the Big 4 networks this season. L+3: The prior week's "Michael J. Fox Show" added 36% or 0.43 of a rating point to its next-day L+SD 18-49 rating (to a 1.61 from a 1.18) and 30% or 1.151 million persons in total viewers (5.007 million vs. 3.856 million). L+7: In week 2, "Michael J. Fox" added 44% or 0.77 rating points to its L+SD 18-49 rating (2.51 vs. 1.74) and in total viewers, added 37% or 1.981 million persons (7.334 million vs. 5.353 million).
From 10:01-11 p.m., "Parenthood" (1.3/4 in 18-49, 4.0 million viewers overall) is up week to week by 8% in 18-49 rating (1.3 vs. 1.2) and by 7% in total viewers (4.0 million vs. 3.8 million). "Parenthood" was up by 30% versus NBC's average in the time period last season (1.3 vs. 1.0). From its first half-hour to its second, "Parenthood" maintained 100% of its 18-49 rating (1.3, 1.3). L+3: The prior week's "Parenthood" added 60% or 0.72 of a rating point to its next-day L+SD 18-49 rating (to a 1.90 from a 1.18) and 46% or 1.731 million persons in total viewers (5.500 million vs. 3.769 million). L+7: In week 2, "Parenthood" added 69% or 1.07 rating points to its L+SD 18-49 rating (2.61 vs. 1.54) and in total viewers, added 60% or 2.519 million persons (6.744 million vs. 4.225 million).
Friday: "Dateline NBC" (1.3/4 in 18-49, 5.7 million viewers overall from 9-11 p.m. ET) grew week to week by 8% in adults 18-49 (to a 1.3 rating from a 1.2) and 7% in total viewers (5.7 million vs. 5.3 million). "Dateline" equaled its highest 18-49 rating since September 13. For its second hour from 10-11 p.m. ET, "Dateline NBC" ranked #1 or tied for #1 among ABC, CBS, and NBC in every key demographic, delivering a 15% margin of victory among those nets in that hour in adults 18-49 (with a 1.5 rating vs. a 1.3 for CBS's second-place "Blue Bloods").
From 8-8:30 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of "The Michael J. Fox Show" (0.8/3 in 18-49, 3.0 million viewers overall) jumped 0.2 of a point or 33% in 18-49 rating versus its rebroadcast in this time period the prior week and was up 7% in total viewers (3.0 million vs. 2.8 million).
Sunday: "Sunday Night Football" (10.0/27 in 18-49, 26.9 million viewers overall from 8:31-12:14 p.m. ET), featuring the Denver Broncos at the Indianapolis Colts, scored the highest 18-49 rating for an October primetime NFL telecast in 15 years (since Mon., Oct. 5, 1998, Vikings-Packers on ABC, 10.2) and generated the biggest overall audience for an October primetime NFL game in 21 years (since Oct. 5, 1992, Cowboys-Eagles, ABC, 33.0 million). It's the fourth-best edition of "Sunday Night Football" ever in 18-49 and total viewers.
The Broncos-Colts game ranked #1 for the night on ABC, CBS and Fox in all key measures - adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54, plus total viewers -- and led NBC to the nightlong win among those nets in each of those key categories.
Seven weeks into the NFL season, "Sunday Night Football" is delivering the strongest 18-49 average for a primetime NFL series (8.8, L+SD) at this point in the season in 16 years (since ABC's Monday football in 1997, 9.1) and the biggest overall audience (22.7 million) at this point in 17 years (since ABC's Monday coverage in 1996, 24.8 million).
