"The Closer," "Rizzoli & Isles" and "Falling Skies" Claim All of Basic Cable's Top 10 Drama Telecasts for the Month

TNT continued to heat up summer with an outstanding August performance that included The Closer, Rizzoli & Isles and Falling Skies claiming all of basic cable's Top 10 drama telecasts for the month.

Closing out August on a high note, last week's episode ofThe Closer ranked as basic cable's #1 drama for the week, with an impressive 8.3 million viewers in Live + 3 delivery. The hit crime drama also garnered 2.2 million adults 18-49 and 3 million adults 25-54.

Coming in a close second among dramas for the week was Rizzoli & Isles, which drew 8.2 million viewers, 2.3 million adults 18-49 and 2.9 million adults 25-54 in Live + 3.

Sunday night's summer finale of the Top 10 drama Leverage, which is enjoying its most successful season yet, averaged more than 3 million viewers in Live + Same Day, with 1.2 million adults 18-49 and 1.6 million adults 25-54. In Live + 7 delivery for the season, Leverage is up 2% with adults 18-49 and 5% with adults 25-54.

TNT's time-shifted viewing continues to provide a big boost for the network. According to the latest Live + 7 data, the Aug. 8 episode of Rizzoli & Isles scored its biggest audience of the season, with more than 9.1 million viewers, 2.6 million adults 18-49 and 3.4 million adults 25-54. The Closer also chalked up excellent Live + 7 numbers for its Aug. 8 episode, finishing with 8.7 million viewers, 2.5 million adults 18-49 and 3.2 million adults 25-54. And the Aug. 14 episode of Leverage grew to 4.8 million viewers, 1.9 million adults 18-49 and 2.3 million adults 25-54.

On the movie front, TNT's Sunday, Aug. 7, telecast of the blockbuster Transformers ranked as ad-supported cable's #1 movie in August among adults 18-49 (1.4 million) and adults 25-54 (1.5 million).

Cartoon Network

Scoring a summer-long "three-peat" (June, July & August) of Early Evening (7-9 p.m.) growth among all kids demos, Cartoon Network charted average monthly delivery gains among kids 6-11 (603,000) of 19%, kids 2-11 (845,000) of 6% and kids 9-14 (409,000) of 20%. Across Total Day (6 a.m.-9 p.m.), Cartoon Network posted average delivery growth among kids 6-11 (444,000) of 12%, kids 2-11 (658,000) of 3% and kids 9-14 (305,000) of 13%.

Cartoon Network's Monday night (7-9 p.m.) stood out across August 2011 as the #1 TV destination for boys 6-11, 2-11 and 9-14. Earning double-digit delivery gains across the board vs. last year, kids 6-11 (1,018,000) grew by 48%, kids 2-11 (1,321,000) by 17%, kids 9-14 (729,000) by 62%, boy 6-11 (772,000) by 62%, boys 2-11 (969,000) by 30% and boys 9-14 (557,000) by 78%. Cartoon Network original comedies The Amazing World of Gumball (7:30 p.m.), Regular Show (8:15) and MAD (8:30, 8:45 p.m.) each ranked #1 in their timeslots on all television among boys. Adventure Time (8 p.m.) had the distinction of ranking #1 in its time period on all TV among kids 6-11, kids 9-14 and all boys demos.

Tuesday and Wednesday evenings also ranked #1 for the night (7-9 p.m.) on all television across August 2011 among boys 6-11. Both nights posted mostly double-digit delivery gains across all kids and boys demos vs. the same time period last year. The Looney Tunes Show (8 p.m.) and The Amazing World of Gumball (8:30 p.m.) on Tuesday nights were each #1 in their time periods among all boys, charting between 40% and 74% delivery growth. Dude, What Would Happen (8 p.m.) and Destroy Build Destroy (8:30 p.m.) on Wednesday nights were each #1 in their time periods among boys 6-11 and boys 9-14, scoring delivery growth between 21% and 38%.

Friday nights felt the roar of the all-new animated series, ThunderCats (Fridays, 8 p.m.), which posted impressive double-digit delivery growth among all kids and boys 6-11, 2-11 and 9-14 vs. the same time period last year. Average kids 6-11 delivery (531,000) grew by 74%, kids 2-11 (774,000) by 39%, kids 9-14 (364,000) by 50%, boys 6-11 (367,000) by 43%, boys 2-11 (504,000) by 29% and boys 9-14 (247,000) by 27%.

Adult Swim

Throughout August 2011, Adult Swim swept all young adult and young male demos on basic cable, ranking #1 for Total Day Delivery of adults and men 18-34, 18-49 and 18-24. Compared to August 2010, average monthly delivery of adults 18-34 (523,000) grew by 5%, adults 18-49 (725,000) by 6%, men 18-34 (306,000) by 3% and men 18-49 (411,000) by 3%.

Adult Swim programming in August 2011 accounted for 20 of the top 50 telecasts on basic cable for the month among adults 18-34, and 21 of the top 50 telecasts among men 18-34, both more than any other network.

truTV

truTV once again landed among basic cable's Top 10 networks in primetime delivery of adults 18-49 (610,000); men 18-34 (161,000); and men 18-49 (357,000), outperforming such competitors as Comedy Central, Syfy and Discovery. The week closes out a record summer for truTV among young adults and men.

truTV hit series Lizard Lick Towing returned with new episodes Monday at 9:30, with more than 2.2 million viewers. The series ranked as cable's #1 entertainment program in its timeslot among men 18-34 (476,000) and second in its timeslot among adults 18-34 (686,000); adults 18-49 (1.2 million); and men 18-49 (740,000).

truTV's newest series, Bear Swamp Recovery, debuted to strong numbers Monday at 10 p.m., with 1.6 million viewers. The show ranked among ad-supported cable's Top 5 entertainment programs in the timeslot with men 18-34 (275,000) and men 18-49 (520,000).

Operation Repo continues to draw a big audience, ranking among cable's Top 5 entertainment programs in its Wednesday 9:30 p.m. timeslot with viewers (1.8 million); adults 18-49 (1 million); men 18-34 (268,000); and men 18-49 (582,000).

The just-renewed hit South Beach Tow drew a strong 1.5 million viewers last Wednesday at 10 p.m. and ranked among ad-supported cable's Top 5 entertainment programs in its timeslot with adults 18-49 (532,000).

truTV's long-running hit World's Dumbest... delivered 1.6 million viewers Thursday at 9 p.m., ranking among cable's Top 5 entertainment programs in its time period with adults 18-49 (791,000).

Lizard Lick Towing, Bear Swamp Recovery, Operation Repo, South Beach Tow and World's Dumbest... also delivered outstanding time-period growth compared to the same time last year, with Operation Repo's growth climbing to triple-digit percentages.

TBS

TBS's Emmy(R)-nominated late-night series CONAN was on break last week. Meanwhile, time-shifted viewing lifted CONAN's audience for the week of Aug. 8 to 901,000 viewers in Live + 7 (+8% compared to the prior week), with 467,000 adults 18-34 (+11% vs. prior week) and 674,000 adults 18-49 (+4%).

TBS's telecasts of The Office last Tuesday gave TBS the Top 3 sitcom telecasts for the week among adults 18-34 and adults 18-49. Overall, TBS claimed five of the week's Top 10 sitcom telecasts among adults 18-34 and six of the Top 10 among adults 18-49.
