Moving to a new night (shifting from Tuesdays last summer) opposite established unscripted competition during the 9 o'clock hour from Fox's second half of its 2-hour "So You Think You Can Dance," ABC's "I Survived a Japanese Game Show" delivered a second-place finish in Adults 18-49 (2.1/6). In fact on both Nielsen measures it was the second-best-ever audience retention for any telecast of "Japanese Game Show" out of "Wipeout."
Sunday
"ABC Premiere Event Impact - Part 1" (9:00 11:00 p.m.)
The "ABC Premiere Event Impact - Part 1" drew the Net's largest summer audience (4.7 million) with non-sports programming in the 2-hour time period in nearly 1 year - since 7/6/08. Part 1 of the ABC miniseries saw its audience build throughout the course of its telecast, growing by 21% (4.2 million to 5.1 million) from its first half-hour to its final half-hour.
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 31% currently, from 25% at the same point in 2008. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
