Netflix Reveals the Cast and Announces the Start of Production for 'My Dearest Señorita'
Netflix has announced the start of production in Pamplona for My Dearest Señorita, a film written by Alana S. Portero and directed by Fernando González Molina.
Elisabeth Martínez makes her on-screen debut in the lead role of the film. The cast also features Anna Castillo (Nowhere), Paco León (Sin instrucciones), Nagore Aranburu (Querer), Manu Ríos (Breathless), Eneko Sagardoy (Patria), Lola Rodríguez (Welcome to Edén), María Galiana (Cuéntame cómo pasó), and Delphina Bianco.
My Dearest Señorita is a loose adaptation of the 1972 film of the same name, starring José Luis López Vázquez and directed by Jaime de Armiñán, who co-wrote the screenplay with José Luis Borau. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1972.
Fernando González Molina (Baztán Trilogy, Palm Trees in the Snow) directs the new adaptation, with the screenplay written by Alana S. Portero, author of the novel La mala costumbre (Seix Barral). Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi (The Messiah, Veneno, Paquita Salas) produce the film through their production company, Suma Content.
Director Fernando González Molina says: "For me, it was essential to build this new version of My Dearest Señorita from the need to portray a reality - the intersex reality - barely hinted at in the original film and almost in cinema in general. Doing this with an intersex actress as the lead was key for the project from the very first conversation with the producers. Finding Elisabeth has been one of the greatest challenges of the film, and we are fascinated by her and her work. It is very exciting for me to begin this shoot in Pamplona, the place where I was born and where we've set an important part of the film, in which, in some way, Alana and I also tell part of our own story."
Screenwriter Alana S. Portero shares her thoughts on the project: "When constructing the screenplay, it was very important to illuminate the shadows that the story written by Armiñán and Borau left for obvious reasons. What was a virtue in the original version, creating a wonderful film, the shadowy areas, would no longer make sense to write today. We are in the era of the truth of bodies and their diversity. We need to air out every corner of the closets, and it's time to talk about intersexuality. The great tribute we could make to the original film is to build a bright structure on its foundations. There is a lot of love invested in this project by its producers and a very intimate commitment from both Fernando and me."
Producers Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo add: "This version of My Dearest Señorita is a project we've been brainstorming for a long time, fighting to bring it to life. When Netflix decided to make it with us, we thought of bringing together two people we admire: Alana S. Portero for the screenplay and Fernando González Molina for the direction of the film. It has turned out to be a wonderful idea; they've formed a perfect tandem. This loose adaptation of My Dear Miss represents the DNA of Suma Content: bringing visibility to realities like those of intersex people, with whom we still have a pending debt as a society. In My Dearest Señorita, we continue to give first opportunities to LGBTQ+ individuals both in front of and behind the camera."
Filming began this week and will take place over several weeks in Pamplona and Madrid.
