Prime Video to Premiere Japanese Original Film, "Broken Rage," Directed, Written by, and Starring Takeshi Kitano, Exclusively on Prime Video on February 13
TOKYO - January 17, 2025 - Today, Prime Video announced that Japanese Original film Broken Rage will launch on February 13, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. Broken Rage is the latest addition to the Prime membership. Prime members enjoy savings, convenience, and entertainment, all in a single membership.
Directed, written by, and starring the legendary filmmaker Takeshi Kitano, who continues to receive worldwide acclaim, Broken Rage is based on his concept of exploring "comedy within a violent film." This hour-long film is divided into two parts. The first half depicts a hard-boiled crime action where a hitman, caught between the police and the yakuza, struggles to survive. The second half ingeniously retells the same story using self-parody techniques, presenting it in a comedic style. This work, which Director Kitano himself described as an experimental endeavor, was selected for the Out of Competition section at the Venice International Film Festival 2024. It marks the first Japanese film produced for streaming to be officially selected for the prestigious international film festival.
Tadanobu Asano, who starred in Kitano's Zatōichi (2003) and Kubi (2023) and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor for Shogun (2023), plays the lead detective trying to coerce Nezumi into cooperating as an undercover informant in a drug investigation. Nao Omori, who made his Hollywood debut in The Outsiders (2018) and has appeared in five of Kitano's films, including Dolls (2002), Achilles and the Tortoise (2008), Outrage Coda (2017), and Kubi (2023), also plays a detective.
The role of the yakuza boss overseeing the drug trade is played by Shidō Nakamura, who made his debut in a Takeshi Kitano film with Kubi (2023), and the role of the young boss is played by Hakuryu, who has appeared in numerous Kitano films. The talented ensemble cast also includes Takashi Nishina (Outrage Coda, Kubi), So Kaku (Sanctuary, 2023), along with popular Japanese comedians making their first appearances in a Kitano film, such as Gekidan Hitori, Masanori Hasegawa (Nishikigoi), Azusa Babazono, and Mogura Suzuki (Kuki Kaidan).
