Prime Video, Amazon MGM Studios and Gary "Gaz" Alazraki's Máquina Vega announce the new sitcom series, La Oficina, an adaptation of the BBC Studios format, The Office. Gaz Alazraki (Nosotros los Nobles, Club de Cuervos) will serve as director and executive producer and Marcos Bucay (Guadalupe Reyes, Cómo Sobrevivir Soltero) will be the showrunner of this adaptation, which is part of the overall deal signed between Amazon MGM Studios and Máquina Vega. La Oficina will be available exclusively on Prime Video in Latin America, Brazil and Spain.
This new version will take place in Aguascalientes and the office will be led by Jerónimo Ponce III, regional manager of the family business "Jabones Olimpo". The office employees will have to endure the headaches of working for a family business where the boss is not qualified to lead the company.
La Oficina joins the international adaptations of the hit series The Office, originally created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, which include versions in the United States, France, Chile and Poland, among others, in addition to the Australian version, which is now available on Prime Video.
"It's really exciting to do our own version of one of the most successful comedies of all time. The Mexican office worker subculture is one of the richest and most surreal in the world, and with Marcos Bucay and Gaz Alazraki, the two most successful comedy creators in the country, we know we have something unique that will surpass all expectations and leave fans of previous versions speechless," says Alonso Aguilar, who heads Prime Video's team of Original Productions in Mexico.
"I've wanted to adapt The Office since I bought the Ricky Gervais DVDs in 2003. Everything about the humor and the format makes me consider it the bravest comedy I've ever seen," says Gaz Alazraki. "It's an honor for me to have the opportunity to do this version, La Oficina, with such a talented partner as Marcos (Bucay), whom I have admired since all his videoclips (Quiero ir al antro, Chip Torres, among others) became viral sensations. I thank Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant for trusting us with their baby and there is no better partner than Prime Video to try to make all of Mexico laugh about the work experience in our country".
"Doing the Mexican version of The Office is a dream, since it was precisely thanks to the original series, The Office, that I decided to write comedy," says Marcos Bucay. "This series is a celebration of Mexican office culture and will be a pleasant surprise, as we have managed to take the format of The Office and really make it for Mexicans."
"For over 20 years, multiple versions of The Office have captivated audiences worldwide, and it's exciting that Prime Video viewers in Latin America will now get to meet the Mexican version David Brent with Jerónimo Ponce III stepping into the spotlight as the boss we hate to love," adds André Renaud, SVP Global Format Sales at BBC Studios. "I can't wait to see the brilliant work that Gaz Alazraki and Marcos Bucay bring to life with Amazon MGM Studios when it premieres on Prime Video."
Gaz Alazraki is a Mexican filmmaker who just directed the remake of El Padre de la Novia, with Plan B as producer. The film ended up being HBO Max's biggest premiere to date for a title created exclusively for streaming. Gaz is best known for writing and directing the Mexican comedy Nosotros los Nobles, which became the biggest blockbuster Mexican film in history upon its release. Gaz also created, directed and was executive producer of two of Netflix's first and most notable Spanish-language comedy series, Club de Cuervos and its spin-off La Balada de Hugo Sánchez. The third season of Club de Cuervos was nominated for an International Emmy Award. Gaz was named one of The Hollywood Reporter's emerging filmmakers to watch. He is a founding partner and creative leader of Máquina Vega and an Oceana board member.
Marcos Bucay is the creator of the show VGLY, showrunner and director of Cómo Sobrevivir Soltero, screenwriter of the Emmy-nominated series Club de Cuervos, director and screenwriter of Yo, Potro and Fondeados, co-screenwriter of Guadalupe-Reyes, as well as screenwriter of Mi Mamá Está Saliendo and Génes, both currently in post-production. In 2009, Marcos founded La Gran Royal, responsible for viral hits such as Colibritany, Fer y Santi, and Chip Torres, with over 300 million views. Marcos is currently the director of Happy Shop Studio, a creative hub and production company for comedy formats.
La Oficina joins the Amazon Prime membership catalog. Amazon Prime members in Mexico have access to free and fast shipping and entertainment, all in one membership. The Mexican production follows the success of The Office, a series created more than two decades ago by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant in which, in mockumentary format, shows that the world inside offices is much funnier than many of us think. With its original version set in an office in Berkshire, England, thanks to its format and black humor, the series has been exported to countries such as Germany, France, Brazil, Chile and the United States.
