All New Mexican Series and Films Begin Production

Francisco Ramos

VP of Latin American Content

We want to begin 2024 by reaffirming our commitment to show the true Mexico on Netflix. This diverse and complex Mexico - immensely rich, sometimes contradictory, and full of possibilities - is what inspires us, motivates us and keeps us always on the lookout for the best stories, so that our series and films are even more ambitious and accurate.

This commitment has led us to tell authentic and compelling stories that reflect the diversity of those who create them, such as these productions released in 2023: Nothing to See Here, Thursday's Widows, The Surrogacy, Queens on the Run, Where the Tracks End, Noise, and ¡Que viva México! - one of the most watched films on Netflix in Mexico ever.

We will continue to explore the identity of our country through big bets, like the film adaptation of Pedro Páramo, based on the novel by Juan Rulfo, which is considered one of the most important works of Mexican and Latin American literature. The film will be directed by award-winning cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto and is coming to Netflix this year.

And, as we always say, this is just the beginning!

Today, we're pleased to announce the production of the nine following series and films. These projects confirm our commitment to the Mexican audiovisual industry, to entertainment made in Mexico, and to the construction of our cultural story. These projects both make us proud and challenge us, but it is this very challenge that pushes us further after almost ten years of producing in Mexico. We want Mexico to be seen.

Details on our newly announced series and films are as follows:

Las muertas: A series based on the novel by Jorge Ibargüengoitia that tells the story of the Baladro sisters, inspired by the Mexican serial killers known as Las Poquianchis. Filmmaker Luis Estrada will adapt the novel for Netflix and direct the series, which will be produced by Mezcala Films.

Gringo Hunters: A show centered on an elite Mexican police unit that catches fugitives on the run to Mexico. The story is based on an article published by The Washington Post, written by Kevin Sieff, and will be filmed in Tijuana and Mexico City. The series will be produced by Woo Films and Redrum in co-production with Imagine Entertainment, and in association with The Washington Post.

Nadie nos vio partir: A limited series based on the novel of the same name by Tamara Trottner. It tells the intense pursuit of a mother to rescue her children, who were kidnapped by her vengeful husband. This is the beginning of the confrontation between two of the most powerful families in the Jewish community in the '60s. María Camila Arias and Big Drama are in charge of the adaptation, while Alebrije Producciones and Península Films are in charge of the production.

Celda 211 (working title): A limited series inspired by the novel of the same name by Francisco Pérez Gandul and by the events that took place at the Adult Social Reinsertion Center #3 in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, on December 31, 2022. The six-episode series starring Diego Calva and Noé Hernández will be directed by Jaime Reynoso and Gerardo Naranjoand produced by Woo Films.

Las hermanas Guerra: A series about sisters Perla and Antonia, whose intense rivalry is marked by betrayal, followed by cruel manipulation. Created and written by José Ignacio "Chascas" Valenzuela, directed by Carlos Villegas and Iker Dupeyron, and produced by Mar Abierto.

Las Locuras: The new film by Rodrigo García following Familia. The Mexican-Colombian director will explore, through a series of stories surrounding one intense day, how people are pushed to the limits and rebel against confinement, self-censorship and family pressure. Like Familia, it is produced by Global Panorama.

The biggest fan (working title): A film will be directed by María Torres, with whom we have previously collaborated on Anonymously Yours. The biggest fan is a comedy that tells the story of Lana Cruz, an actress who, after being canceled from Hollywood, returns to Mexico to act in a film and show everybody that she can still be a big star. What she doesn't imagine is that she will meet Polly, her biggest fan and her worst nightmare. Lana will have to do everything in her power to keep Polly from ending her career and her patience. Kate del Castillo. Gaumont and Pasajero will produce.

Delincuentes: A film directed by Humberto Hinojosa, with whom we recently worked on the hit series Thursday's Widows. Delincuentes tells the story of a group of privileged young people who take advantage of their elite social status to commit crimes. Their activities grow in ambition and danger, reflecting the harsh reality hidden behind the façade of opulence, where the most vulnerable will pay the highest price. Alfonso Herrera, Ximena Lamadrid, Juan Pablo Fuentes, Fernando Cattori, and Renata Manterola star. Produced by Tigre and BH5.

Negociando con mi mujer (working title): A film directed by Juan Taratuto. In this action comedy, Alan Binder is a brilliant hostage negotiator - the best in Mexico - who will face the most important case of his career: the kidnapping of the President and his mistress. The kidnapper asks to negotiate with Alan and only with him. Starring Mauricio Ochmann, Tato Alexander and Leonardo Ortizgriz. Produced by Tiger House and Sin Sentido Films.
