By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

AMERICAN IDOL (ABC) - Filming on the new season has begun at a number of locations across California. It's understood judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry, "instead of all sitting at the same table, the trio will have separate tables and there will be zoning in place for interacting with others." That's in addition to "rigorous health and safety protocols to ensure that the set is as safe as possible." (Deadline.com)
FRIENDS LIKE THESE/MY LADY JANE (Amazon, New!) - Author Gemma Burgess has set up a pair of projects at the streaming service. First up: "Friends Like These" is billed as "a half-hour espionage comedy." Hat Trick Productions is producing. The other is an adaptation of her historical fantasy adventure "My Lady Jane," "a comic supernatural tale of true love and high adventure, set in an alternate England in 1553, a country on the verge of civil war." Parkes+MacDonald's Laurie MacDonald and Walter Parkes will also executive produce. (Deadline.com)
GLOW (Netflix) - The streaming service has opted not to move forward with its previously ordered fourth and final season. "We've made the difficult decision not to do a fourth season of GLOW due to COVID, which makes shooting this physically intimate show with its large ensemble cast especially challenging," a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement. "We are so grateful to creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, Jenji Kohan and all the writers, cast and crew for sharing this story about the incredible women of GLOW with us and the world." Creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch added in their own statement: "COVID has killed actual humans. It's a national tragedy and should be our focus. COVID also apparently took down our show. Netflix has decided not to finish filming the final season of GLOW. We were handed the creative freedom to make a complicated comedy about women and tell their stories. And wrestle. And now that's gone. There's a lot of sh*tty things happening in the world that are much bigger than this right now. But it still sucks that we don't get to see these 15 women in a frame together again." (Deadline.com)
GOSSIP GIRL (HBO Max) - Model and skateboarder Evan Mock is the latest addition to the reboot series, his first acting job. No details about his role were given. (Deadline.com)
MORNING SHOW, THE (Apple TV+) - The series is slated to restart filming its second season on October 19. Co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carell, Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Bel Powley, Karen Pittman and Desean Terry are all set to return. (Deadline.com)
PERIPHERAL, THE (Amazon) - Chloƫ Grace Moretz has scored a lead role on the upcoming William Gibson adaptation as Flynne Fisher, "a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow's America. Flynne is smart, ambitious and doomed. She has no future - until the future comes calling for her." (Variety.com)
TEENAGE BOUNTY HUNTERS (Netflix) - The drama has been canceled after one season, less than two months after its debut. (Deadline.com)
VALLEY OF THE GODS (ABC, New!) - Peter Nowalk has booked a production commitment from the Alphabet for "a sexy, high-stakes drama about the most powerful people in Silicon Valley and the hungry, underestimated outsiders trying to claw their way in." Joanna Coles will also executive produce for ABC Signature. (Deadline.com)
VANCOUVER TV PRODUCTIONS (Various) - "Big Sky," "The Mysterious Benedict Society," "Nancy Drew," "Turner & Hooch" and "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist" are the latest series cleared to resume production after receiving the delayed COVID test results for their casts and crews. All five are expected to be back filming by tomorrow at the latest. (Deadline.com)
WEST WING, THE (HBO Max) - Sterling K. Brown has been tapped to play Leo McGarry in the show's When We All Vote-driven reunion special. He'll succeed the late John Spencer, who received Emmy nominations five times for said role and won in 2002. (Deadline.com)
