LOS ANGELES, MARCH 7, 2019 - In celebration of International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8th, TBS and TNT are "going purple" across social platforms and dedicating the day to spotlighting female creators with a full takeover featuring some of the best programming that was exclusively written, directed and produced by women to air all day across both networks' linear and digital platforms. TBS and TNT collaborated with other brands within the WarnerMedia portfolio in the curation of their women-driven IWD programming, creating a truly diverse and immersive collection of entertainment in celebration of the day.
To further amplify these creative voices, the day's special, curated slate features TBS and TNT original series including Claws and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, among others. The day's programming will also showcase acquired series, including Friends and Charmed, micro documentaries and short form stories from CNN's Great Big Story and TNT and Refinery29's acclaimed short film series, Shatterbox. Additionally, the networks' day-long takeover culminates into a special IWD simulcast presentation of Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman at 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT on March 8th. More than a stunt, TBS and TNT's custom, female-forward slate is designed to not only entertain, but also inspire conversation and further awareness around inclusion and gender equality.
"Our goal with TBS and TNT's curated International Women's Day programming is to move beyond words to action, using our female-driven, day-long marathon to amplify women's voices. It's also essential to the health and future of our industry as the data continues to prove that content that presents diverse voices and differentiated points of view succeed in breaking through and authentically win audiences," said Michael Quigley, EVP of Commercial Operations, Content Strategy & Monetization for TBS and TNT. "It is also with great pride that, due to our shared values, our sister brands HBO, Warner Bros. and others within the WarnerMedia family all rallied in collaboration with us to make this day a reality. As we celebrate the successes of women everywhere today we also reflect on the fact that there is still much work left to be done."
In addition to selected episodes of TBS and TNT original series, including I Am the Night, The Last O.G., Search Party and Animal Kingdom, new and existing fans of the top rated networks will also be treated to several episodes of SHINE, a new short form series from CNN's award-winning global media company, Great Big Story. The series, which is produced and directed by Jillian Eugenios and executive-produced by Courtney Coupe and Sadie Bass, profiles the unique stories of several women celebrating beauty through identity, community and empowerment. Featured female directors from Refinery29 and TNT's Shatterbox collection, the film series that gives female storytellers a platform to create short films that redefine identity, imagination and storytelling through the female lens, include Yara Shahidi, Gillian Jacobs, Academy Award-nominated Jessica Sanders, A.M. Lukas (aka Anna Martemucci), Allana Harkin, Gilly Barnes, Ivy Agregan and Janine Sherman-Barrois, showrunner and executive producer of TNT's Claws. For most of Shatterbox's directors, March 8th will also mark the premiere of their films on network television.
Additionally, female-created Orangetheory Fitness has partnered with TBS for International Women's Day with a campaign that empowers female trailblazers to overcome obstacles. As part of their partnership, during the premiere of Wonder Woman on TBS, Orangetheory Fitness will take over a full commercial pod with inspiring, contextually relevant creative. Founder Ellen Latham will speak to her personal breakthroughs in building the fitness empire, as women athletes bring this message to life through choreographed exercises that exalt strength and resilience. The branded content will also be distributed across TBS's social media handles, and optimized to generate new leads for Orangetheory Fitness via Turner Ignite's new social commerce solution.
"Our network partners identified International Women's Day early as an important cultural tentpole to support with our programming, and together, we worked closely to find the right marketing partner who shared that same desire to champion female empowerment," added Jenn Cohen, SVP of Entertainment Content Partnerships, Turner Ignite. "The spirit of Orangetheory Fitness and creator/co-founder Ellen Latham's personal growth story is a natural fit within our female-forward schedule, providing a relevant and uplifting platform for the brand's story to breakthrough."
"Gender equality isn't just a women's issue, it's a business issue that's become 'mission imperative' to the way we approach entertainment," added Quigley.
