ARE MEN NECESSARY? (HBO, New!) - Whitney Cummings ("Whitney") is attached to star in a new comedy pilot at the pay channel billed as "a comedic portrait of modern relationships that focuses on human nature and social construction using documentary elements and appearances from experts to help the characters understand the biological basis of their behavior." The project is inspired by Maureen Dowd's 2005 book "Are Men Necessary? When Sexes Collide." Cummings, who also has a stand-up special in the works at HBO, will likewise pen the script and executive produce alongside Dowd, Tom Werner and Jimmy Miller. (Deadline.com)


UNTITLED AZIZ ANSARI PROJECT (Netflix, New!) - Aziz Ansari ("Parks & Recreation") is set to star in a new 10-episode series at the digital distributor which "features semi-autobiographical elements and deals with dating and relationships." Ansari and Alan Yang are behind the half-hour with fellow "Parks" alums Michael Schur, David Miner and Dave Becky also serving as executive producers for Universal Television and 3 Arts Entertainment. James Ponsoldt (Spectacular Now) is helming the project, which also stars H. Jon Benjamin, Lena Waithe, Eric Wareheim, Noël Wells and Kelvin Yu. The guest cast includes Claire Danes. (Deadline.com)


UNTITLED KATIE HOLMES/MIKE DANIELS PROJECT (Cinemax, New!) - Actress Katie Holmes and writer Mike Daniels ("Sons of Anarchy") are set to team for a new drama at the pay channel about "a victims' rights advocate who is attacked by a stalker and then returns to the streets of her crime-ridden past to seek justice." Daniels will pen the script and executive produce alongside Holmes, who is not attached to star, for Universal Television, home to Daniels's overall deal. (Deadline.com)


AND IN OTHER NEWS... - Paramount Television is looking to bring the 1999 feature "Galaxy Quest" to the small screen with the film's writer Robert Gordon, director Dean Parisot and producer Mark Johnson among the auspices (Deadline.com); Elizabeth Gilbert's novel "The Signature of All Things" has been optioned by PBS for its "Masterpiece" franchise (@masterpiecepbs); and Charlie Barnett's Peter Mills won't return as a series regular on "Chicago Fire" next season (TVLine.com).
