"Filthy Gorgeous" To Air Followed By Guccione's Controversial Film "Caligula"
New York, NY (August 29, 2013) - Premium network EPIX is pleased to announce the world premiere of the EPIX Original Documentary Filthy Gorgeous on November 8 at 11PM ET - the little known and fascinating story of Bob Guccione's life, a businessman whose creativity and passion led him to build a publishing empire only to lose it all at the end of his life. EPIX will present Filthy Gorgeous: The Bob Guccione Story, directed by Barry Avrich, at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival in September followed by the November premiere of the film on EPIX, online at EpixHD.com and on EPIX apps on Xbox, Roku, iPads and more.
Guccione played a starring role in one of the most contentious social and sexual revolutions in modern history through his publication of Penthouse. An unlikely catalyst of the 1960's counter culture, Guccione used his art and candid views on sexuality and politics to create scandal, spark debate, and implement change, all the while leading a relatively quiet and reclusive lifestyle. Penthouse was a formative magazine, dedicated to freedom of speech with an emphasis on controversial journalism and advancing the dialogue of sexuality with greater explicitness in a magazine than ever before. However a series of decisions led to the fall and eventual bankruptcy of Penthouse, with Guccione losing his fortune and dying shortly after. The film explores his rise and fall and its greater impact on American culture through rare home videos, exclusive interviews with Guccione and revealing conversations with his family, past lovers, and close confidants.
"Bob Guccione was a complex man whose publications impacted the lives of many, both in positive and negative ways. The film is incredibly intriguing and one our viewers will not want to miss," said Mark Greenberg, EPIX President and CEO.
Said Director Barry Avrich, "Filthy Gorgeous explores Guccione's legacy which is unforgettable, scandalous and extraordinary. We were thrilled to work with EPIX to bring that legacy to light and engage viewers with the untold details of such an important figure in our culture."
Filthy Gorgeous will premiere followed by Caligula, Guccione's controversial and revolutionary film written by Gore Vidal and starring Helen Mirren and Malcolm McDowell. Guccione was a key player in the creation of Caligula and its prominence in breaking down barriers through the telling a violent, intense and erotic story of the rise and fall of the notorious Roman Emperor Caligula.
Produced, Written and Directed by Barry Avrich, Filthy Gorgeous: The Bob Guccione Story is a Melbar Entertainment Group production in association with EPIX, Astral's The Movie Network and Corus Entertainment's Movie Central, with funding from Rogers Telefund, CAVCO and the OMDC.
