DRAMA SERIES

TRUE BLOOD: Based on the popular Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris, this Emmy(R)-nominated hit drama series was created by Alan Ball, creator of HBO's Emmy(R)-winning series "Six Feet Under." The show follows the on-and-off romance between waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who can hear people's thoughts, and 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer). The fourth-season finale debuts Sept. 11.

BOARDWALK EMPIRE: Set in the 1920s in the early days of Prohibition, this Emmy(R)-nominated, Golden Globe-winning series chronicles the life and times of "Nucky" Thompson, the undisputed leader of Atlantic City, who was equal parts politician and gangster. Steve Buscemi stars as Thompson; other cast members include Michael Pitt, Kelly Macdonald, Michael Shannon, Dabney Coleman, Shea Whigham, Anthony Laciura, Stephen Graham, Jack Huston, Aleksa Palladino, Michael Stuhlbarg, Vincent Piazza, Paz de la Huerta, Paul Sparks, Michael Kenneth Williams and Gretchen Mol. The series was created by Terence Winter ("The Sopranos"), who also serves as executive producer with Martin Scorsese, Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg and Tim Van Patten. The 12-episode second season launches Sept. 25.

LUCK: This new drama series is a provocative look at horse racing - the owners, gamblers, jockeys and diverse gaming industry players. The cast for the pilot stars Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Kevin Dunn, Richard Kind, Jason Gedrick, Ritchie Coster, Ian Hart, Tom Payne, Kerry Condon, Gary Stevens and Nick Nolte; Jill Hennessy guest stars. Pilot credits: executive producers, David Milch, Michael Mann and Carolyn Strauss; co-executive producer, Henry Bronchtein; producer, Dustin Hoffman; written by David Milch; directed by Michael Mann. The nine-episode season was filmed at Santa Anita Park and other Los Angeles locations.

GAME OF THRONES: Based on the popular book series "A Song of Ice and Fire," by George R.R. Martin, this Emmy(R)-nominated fantasy series chronicles an epic struggle for power in a vast and violent fantasy kingdom. The ensemble cast for the first season included Mark Addy, Sean Bean, Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Fairley, Lena Headey, Kit Harington and Aidan Gillen. The second season will shoot at the Paint Hall Studio in Belfast, as well as various locations in Northern Ireland, with debut scheduled for 2012.

COMEDY SERIES

CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM: Now in its eighth season, the Emmy(R)- and Golden Globe-winning show stars "Seinfeld" co-creator Larry David as an over-the-top version of himself in an unsparing but tongue-in-cheek depiction of his life. Featuring real-life celebrities playing themselves, the episodes are improvised by the actors. Guest stars this season include series veterans Bob Einstein, Richard Lewis, Rosie O'Donnell, J.B. Smoove and Wanda Sykes, as well as Jonathan Ames, Bill Buckner, Gary Cole, Michael J. Fox, Ana Gasteyer, Ricky Gervais, Michael Gross, Harry Hamlin, Michael McKean, Aida Turturro and Mookie Wilson. The eighth-season finale debuts Sept. 11.

ENTOURAGE: Created by Doug Ellin, this hit series draws on the experiences of Hollywood insiders and stars Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrara and three-time Emmy(R) winner Jeremy Piven. The finale of the eighth and final season debuts Sept. 11.

HUNG: This comedy series stars Thomas Jane as a well-endowed former high school legend turned struggling middle-aged high school basketball coach, who figures out a way to use his best asset when faced with a financial crisis. The series is written and created by Dmitry Lipkin and Colette Burson. The ten-episode third season kicks off Oct. 2.

HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA: This comedy series follows two enterprising twentysomethings as they hustle their way through New York City, determined to achieve the American Dream by making a name for themselves in the competitive fashion scene. Bryan Greenberg, Victor Rasuk, Luis Guzman, Lake Bell and Scott "Kid Cudi" Mescudi star. Executive produced by Stephen Levinson, series creator Ian Edelman, Julian Farino and Mark Wahlberg, the show kicks off its eight-episode second season Oct. 2.

BORED TO DEATH: Created by Jonathan Ames, this half-hour comedy series stars Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson and Zach Galifianakis. Schwartzman portrays a thirtysomething Brooklyn writer who has a side business as an unlicensed private detective, solving some cases and making others worse. Guest stars this season include John Hodgman, Oliver Platt, Bebe Neuwirth, Patton Oswalt, Dick Cavett, Olympia Dukakis, Isla Fisher, Sarah Silverman, Casey Wilson, Halley Feiffer, Mary Steenburgen and David Rasche. Executive producers are Jonathan Ames, Sarah Condon, Dave Becky, Stephanie Davis and Troy Miller. The eight-episode third season kicks off Oct. 10.

ENLIGHTENED: This new show focuses on a self-destructive woman (Laura Dern) who has a spiritual awakening after a meltdown. Determined to live a more enlightened existence, the former career executive's new lifestyle wreaks havoc both at home and at work. Luke Wilson and Diane Ladd also star; the cast also includes Sarah Burns, Timm Sharp, Amy Hill and series writer-director Mike White. The pilot, written and directed by White, was created from a story by White and Dern, who are executive producers. Miguel Arteta, Edward Saxon serve as co-executive producers; David Bernad and Jason Weinberg are producers. The ten-episode season debuts Oct. 10.

ANGRY BOYS: This new comedy series comes from Chris Lilley, creator and star of the acclaimed HBO comedy series "Summer Heights High." Shot in mock documentary style, the show explores what it means to be a 21st-century boy by putting the male of the species under the microscope, with Lilley playing multiple roles. The 12-episode season debuts this fall.

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF TIM: Returning for its third season, this animated series about an average guy whose instincts repeatedly lead him down the wrong path was created by Steve Dildarian, who also executive produces and writes the show, and provides the voice of the title character. The ten-episode season debuts later this year.

EASTBOUND & DOWN: Starring Danny McBride and executive produced by Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Chris Henchy, Jody Hill and Danny McBride, this comedy series tells the story of a star pitcher whose self-destructive behavior knocks him out of major league baseball, leaving him broke, delusional and desperate to regain his former glory. Production begins on the third season this summer, with debut scheduled for 2012.

GIRLS: Created by and starring Lena Dunham ("Tiny Furniture"), the show is a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20s. Dunham wrote and directed the pilot of the series, which she executive produces along with Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner. The cast also includes Jemima Kirke, Allison Williams, Adam Driver and Zosia Mamet. Currently shooting in New York, the ten-episode season debuts in 2012.

VEEP: Created by Armando Iannucci (Oscar(R) nominee for co-writing "In the Loop"), this new comedy series stars Emmy(R) winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus as former Senator Selina Meyer, who becomes Vice President, only to discover the job is nothing like she expected, but everything she was warned about. The show also stars Sufe Bradshaw, Anna Chlumsky, Tony Hale, Reid Scott, Tim Simons and Matt Walsh. Iannucci co-wrote and directed the pilot of the series, which he executive produces along with Frank Rich and Christopher Godsick. The eight-episode season debuts in 2012.

THE RICKY GERVAIS SHOW: This animated adaptation of Ricky Gervais' hit podcasts features the comic stream-of-consciousness exchanges between Gervais, his collaborator Stephen Merchant and their offbeat friend Karl Pilkington. The third season debuts in 2012.

OTHER SERIES

REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER: Now in its ninth season, Maher's live weekly show is devoted to news and comedy, allowing him to offer his unique perspective on contemporary issues. New editions debuts Fridays at 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT). The show goes on hiatus after the Aug. 5 edition, and returns Sept. 16.

ON FREDDIE ROACH: Directed and executive produced by Emmy(R) nominee Peter Berg ("Friday Night Lights"), this cinéma-vérité series focuses on Freddie Roach, the world-famous boxing trainer who owns and operates the famed Wildcard Boxing Club in Hollywood, where he has produced a host of world champions. The cameras follow Roach as he works with future stars, engages the continuous stream of celebrity visitors to his gym, finds time to sort through and balance his myriad of outside interests, and manages his new role with USA Boxing, all while fighting Parkinson's disease, an ailment likely linked to his own boxing past. A co-production of Film 44 and Atticus Entertainment; also executive produced by Jim Lampley, Sarah Aubrey and Michael Price. This six-episode series debuts in early 2012.

SPECIALS

MEL BROOKS AND DICK CAVETT TOGETHER AGAIN: This hour-long special features two comedy greats in conversation onstage before a live audience. For four decades, comic genius Mel Brooks and talk-show king Dick Cavett have partnered to give the world scintillating conversation and sidesplitting humor. Last year, they reunited onstage at the Saban Theatre in Los Angeles to share show-business memories and hilarious stories for loyal fans and a new generation of viewers. Debuts Sept. 9.

HBO FILMS

HEMINGWAY & GELLHORN: This biographical drama recounts the tumultuous romance and subsequent marriage of literary master Ernest Hemingway (Clive Owen) and up-and-coming war correspondent Martha Gellhorn (Nicole Kidman), following them through the Spanish Civil War and beyond. As she grew in reputation and stature, Gellhorn stood toe-to-toe with Hemingway, putting his famous bravado and iconic style to the test. David Strathairn, Molly Parker, Rodrigo Santoro, Parker Posey, Lars Ulrich, Santiago Cabrera, Saverio Guerra, Peter Coyote, Diane Baker and Tony Shalhoub also star. Executive produced by James Gandolfini, Alexandra Ryan, Barbara Turner, Peter Kaufman, Philip Kaufman and Trish Hofmann. Philip Kaufman directs from a script by Jerry Stahl. Debuts May 2012.

GAME CHANGE: Starring Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson and Ed Harris, this HBO Films presentation follows Ariz. Sen. John McCain's (Harris) 2008 presidential campaign, from his selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (Moore) as his running mate to their defeat in the general election. Harrelson portrays Steve Schmidt, McCain's senior campaign strategist. Based on the bestselling book of the same name by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, the film is directed by Jay Roach and written by Danny Strong. A Playtone Production in association with Everyman Pictures; executive producers, Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Jay Roach. Debuts in 2012.

HBO DOCUMENTARIES

KORAN BY HEART: The world's oldest Koran memorization contest takes place each year in Cairo, drawing Muslim children from as far as the Maldives and Tajikistan to perform before a panel of prominent judges. This inspirational film follows three of these talented youngsters from intense preparation through the rigorous rounds of the tournament, offering an engaging look at the unique experiences and aspirations of Muslim children throughout the world. Directed by Greg Barker. Debuts Aug. 1.

SUPERHEROES: First-time filmmaker Michael Barnett goes inside the world of real-life caped crusaders, showing how everyday citizens from all over America don masks, homemade costumes and elaborate utility belts in an attempt to bring justice to evildoers everywhere. Debuts Aug. 8.

GLORIA: IN HER OWN WORDS: Beginning as a reporter writing an exposé on the working conditions of Playboy Bunnies, Gloria Steinem was transformed by learning about women's horrifying experiences while covering a New York abortion hearing in 1969. Recounting how became one of the driving forces of feminism, this film includes archival footage and interviews showcasing Steinem's sharp sense of humor, love of life and compassion for humankind. Today, she remains a feminist icon, ever-present on the frontlines of social and political activism. Filmmakers, Peter Kunhardt and Dyllan McGee. Debuts Aug. 15.

THE LATINO LIST: Directed by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders (HBO's "The Black List"), this film focuses on an impressive group of Latino artists and leaders as they pose for a series of highly personal video portraits that offer a unique glimpse into the vibrant and burgeoning culture of Hispanic America. Among those spotlighted are Cuban-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Puerto Rican-Americans, Honduran-Americans and Columbian-Americans, all of whom share a language, but have varying experiences depending on their birth country. The documentary features interviews with such notables as Sonia Maria Sotomayor, Eva Jacqueline Longoria, Gloria Estefan, America Ferrera, Juan Antonio "Chi-Chi" Rodriguez, Jose Moreno Hernandez and Pitbull. Debuts Sept. 29.

LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD: GEORGE HARRISON: This two-part documentary from director Martin Scorsese traces Harrison's life from his musical beginnings in Liverpool through his life as a musician, a seeker, a philanthropist and a filmmaker, weaving together interviews with Harrison and his closest friends, performances, home movies and photographs. Much of the material in the film has never been seen or heard before. The film includes interviews with those closest to Harrison, including Eric Clapton, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, George Martin, Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, Tom Petty, Phil Spector, Ringo Starr and Jackie Stewart. Debuts Oct. 5 and 6.

SING YOUR SONG: This official selection of the Sundance, Berlin and Tribeca film festivals celebrates the life of singer-actor-activist Harry Belafonte. A tenacious hands-on activist, Belafonte's groundbreaking career paralleled the American civil rights movement. He worked intimately with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and John F. Kennedy among others, mobilizing celebrities for social justice, working with Nelson Mandela in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa and taking action to counter gang violence, promote prison reform and address the incarceration of youth. A film by Susanne Rostock; producers, Michael Cohl, Belafonte's daughter Gina Belafonte, Jim Brown, William Eigen, Julius R. Nasso. Debuts Oct. 17.

THE EDUCATION OF DEE DEE RICKS: This documentary is the intimate story of one woman's mission to defeat cancer and help others do the same. After being diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing a double mastectomy, Dee Dee Ricks traded a hedge-fund career for philanthropy, raising money for a Harlem cancer clinic that treats underserved and uninsured patients. The film follows Ricks over a three-year period as she battles her disease, struggles to raise $2.5 million for the clinic and reevaluates her purpose in life. Directed by Perri Peltz. Debuts Oct. 27.

PARADISE LOST 3: PURGATORY: This documentary revisits the case of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, who were incarcerated for the 1993 "West Memphis Three" child murders, which they maintain they did not commit. For nearly two decades, Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky have chronicled the fight to prove their innocence. From full courtroom access and jailhouse interviews to behind-the-scenes strategy meetings and intimate portraits of grief-stricken families, this third, comprehensive look at the case uncovers shocking new developments since the last film ten years ago. Directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky. Debuts in Nov.

MARATHON BOY: This official selection of the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival is the story of four-year-old Budhia Singh, who is plucked from the slums of India by coach Biranchi Das and trained to become India's greatest runner. In the first six months of coaching, the youngster runs more than 24 half-marathons and by the next year, he has run 48 full marathons. With the world looking on and an international storm brewing, the Indian government decides to intervene, accusing the coach of cruelty and threatening to take his newly-adopted son into care. What starts as a rags-to-riches tale turns into a story of greed, envy and broken dreams. Directed by Gemma Atwal. Debuts in Dec.

THE UNION: Directed by Cameron Crowe, this documentary takes an unprecedented look at the creative life of Elton John and his remarkable collaborative album with his early-career idol, Leon Russell, produced by award-winning music producer T Bone Burnett. Never before filmed in his composing process, John is captured by Crowe in this candid portrait of one of the world's most treasured artists and performers. Begun in Nov. 2009, the film chronicles the entire writing and recording process of the album John recorded with Russell. Debuts in Jan. 2012.

PROJECT NIM: From producer Simon Chinn and director James Marsh, the Oscar(R)-winning team behind "Man on Wire," this documentary tells the extraordinary story of Nim, the chimpanzee who in the 1970s became the focus of a landmark experiment that aimed to show an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child. Debuts in 2012.

HBO2 DOCUMENTARIES

MADONNA OF THE MILLS: This documentary profiles the remarkable dedication and influence of a Staten Island woman who earned the moniker "Madonna of the Mills" for her efforts in saving the lives of some 2,000 dogs from the infamous "puppy mills" of rural Pennsylvania. Debuts Aug. 24.

KILLING IN THE NAME: Oscar(R)-nominated this year in the Best Documentary Short category, this documentary tells the story of Muslim Ashraf Al-Khaled's quest to uncover the true cost of terrorism. After his wedding was bombed in 2005 by a suicide bomber, killing 27 family members, cptfc Al-Khaled vowed to break the silence in the Muslim community on this taboo subject. Featuring riveting and honest discussions with such individuals as an Al-Qaeda recruiter, an Islamic militant behind one of the world's worst terrorist attacks, and young boys at a madrassa who are ready to fulfill the duty of jihad, the thought-provoking film travels the world to see if one man can speak truth to terror, and begin to turn the global tide. Directed by Matthew Justus; produced by Rory Kennedy and Liz Garbus. Debuts Sept. 14.

POSITION AMONG THE STARS: This is the latest film from Leonard Retel Helmrich, who has followed an Indonesian family living in the slums of Jakarta for 12 years. As in his two previous award-winning documentaries, this new work shines a light on the underlying patterns of life in Indonesia, exploring crucial issues in the fast-changing country: conflict between religions, the growing difference between rich and poor, gambling addiction, the generation gap and corruption. An official selection of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and winner of Best Feature Documentary at the 2010 International Documentary Film Festival. Debuts Sept. 28.

SUN COME UP: Oscar(R)-nominated this year in the Best Documentary Short category, this documentary chronicles the relocation of the Carteret Islanders, a peaceful community living on a remote island chain in the South Pacific Ocean, and now some of the world's first environmental refugees. When rising seas threaten their survival, the islanders face the painful necessity of leaving their beloved land in search of a new home. The film follows them to nearby Bougainville, where they hope to find land suitable for their relocation. Directed by Jennifer Redfearn. Debuts Oct. 12.

POSTER GIRL: Oscar(R)-nominated this year in the Best Documentary Short category, this documentary is an intimate portrait of Robynn Murray, a typical American teen from a military family who was a cheerleader one year and a cover subject of Army magazine the next. The film follows her as she battles post-traumatic stress disorder and the other challenges faced by many returning vets. Directed by Sara Nesson. Debuts Nov. 9.

STRANGERS NO MORE: This year's Oscar(R) winner for Best Documentary Short visits an exceptional school in the heart of Tel Aviv, where children from 48 countries and diverse backgrounds come together to learn. The film follows several students at Bialik-Rogozin School, many of whom have fled poverty, political adversity and even genocide, as they struggle to acclimate to life in a new land, while slowly opening up to share their stories of hardship and tragedy. Directed by Karen Goodman and Kirk Simon. Debuts in Nov.

THE SOUND OF MUMBAI: A MUSICAL: This documentary is an upbeat look at a band of tenacious, musically inclined Indian street children recruited to perform a one-time-only concert with members of the city's elite Bombay Chamber Orchestra. The youngsters rehearse the timeless classics from "The Sound of Music" and prepare to perform before a sold-out crowd of 1,000 at Mumbai's National Centre for the Performing Arts, which is usually closed to the city's lower classes. With so many hopes and dreams riding on this single event, the stakes are high for all involved. Directed by Sarah McCarthy. Debuts in Dec.

PINK SARIS: Kim Longinotto's latest foray into the lives of extraordinary women follows the unlikely political activists of Northern India's Gulabi Gang and their fearless leader, Sampat Pal. Married as a young girl into a family where she was often beaten, she fought back, leaving her in-laws and eventually becoming famous as a champion for beleaguered women throughout Uttar Pradesh. Debuts in Dec.

THE BENGALI DETECTIVE: Director Philip Cox profiles Rajesh Ji, who, along with his band of helpers, works to solve crimes in the colorful and densely populated city of Kolkata, India, where many citizens have lost trust in the authorities and turn to private detectives for help. The film reveals how Ji follows his dreams of being a professional dancer when not engaged in his challenging job. Debuts in Dec.

SPORTS

REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL: Winner of 21 Sports Emmys(R), and the only sports show ever to receive a Columbia University-duPont broadcast journalism award, the magazine program explores issues, controversies and personalities in the sports world with more provocative reports in new monthly editions. Host Bryant Gumbel is joined by correspondents Mary Carillo, Frank Deford, Jon Frankel, Bernard Goldberg, Armen Keteyian and Andrea Kremer. The next edition debuts Aug. 16.

24/7 MAYWEATHER/ORTIZ: HBO Sports' groundbreaking reality franchise returns for its tenth boxing installment, an all-new four-episode, all-access series following two elite fighters in one of boxing's most competitive divisions as they prepare for their intriguing pay-per-view showdown on Sept. 17. Debuts Aug. 27.

CINEMAX SERIES

STRIKE BACK: This high-octane action series focuses on a charismatic former U.S. Special Forces operative who teams up with a British military unit to stop an international terrorist group. Sullivan Stapleton ("Animal Kingdom") and Philip Winchester ("Fringe") star along with Amanda Mealing and Eva Birthistle. Executive producers are Andy Harries and Elaine Pyke; co-executive producers are Dan Percival and Frank Spotnitz; Michael Casey produces. The ten-episode season launches Aug. 12.

TRANSPORTER: Based on the popular film franchise of the same name created by Luc Besson, this fast-paced series follows the adventures of professional transporter Frank Martin, who operates in a seedy underworld of dangerous criminals and desperate players. Chris Vance stars as Martin; Andrea Osvart stars as his handler Carla; and Francois Berléand reprises his role as Inspector Tarconi from the films. Executive producers are Luc Besson, Klaus Zimmermann and Fred Fuchs; produced by Atlantique/Lagardere Entertainment. The 12-episode season shoots in Europe and Canada, with debut scheduled for 2012.
