[06/15/11 - 10:30 PM] Development Update: Wednesday, June 15 By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC) |
|
LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:
Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!
ONION NEWS NETWORK (IFC)/ONION SPORTSDOME (Comedy Central) - Fake news publication The Onion has inked a first-look development deal with CBS Television Studios. The one-year pact gives the studio first crack at company's output for broadcast, cable and digital. The Onion is currently behind two efforts: IFC's "Onion News Network," which returns for its second season this fall, and Comedy Central's "Onion SportsDome," which isn't expected to return.
OVER/UNDER (USA) - Caroline Dhavernas ("Off the Map") has joined the cast of the drama pilot, about Paul Keller (Steven Pasquale), "a day trader with a massive gambling problem [who is] fired from his job six months after a bad trade costs his firm millions. Shut out of the job market, he and his beautiful, photographer wife retreat to a neighborhood on the cusp of gentrification. He finds an unlikely partner (Anthony Carrigan) and starts to turn his life around in an unexpected way." She'll play Paul's aforementioned wife Vicky. Bronwen Hughes is directing the project from a script by Sheila Callaghan. Fox Television Studios and Universal Cable Productions are co-producing.
POWERS (FX) - Bailee Madison ("Wizards of Waverly Place") has joined the cast of the drama pilot, a police procedural set in a world where superpowers are relatively common and a pair of detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, tasked with investigating cases involving them. She'll play Calista, "an otherworldly young girl raised by her stepdad Eagle, a man with powers," who develops a bond with Walker. Michael Dinner is helming the FX Productions/Sony Pictures Television-based hour from a script by Charles H. Eglee. Charles S. Dutton also stars.
PRIME SUSPECT (NBC) - Tony nominee Elizabeth Rodriguez ("The MotherF**ker With the Hat") has joined the cast of the upcoming drama, which stars Maria Bello as tough-as-nails Detective Jane Timoney. She'll play another detective on the force however no specifics were given. Aidan Quinn, Brian O'Byrne, Damon Gupton, Joe Nieves, Kirk Acevedo, Peter Gerety and Tim Griffin also star in the hour, due on Thursday nights at 10:00/9:00c this fall.
THE PROTECTOR (Lifetime) - Oscar-winner Patty Duke ("The Miracle Worker") is set to recur on the recently launched drama, which stars Ally Walker as Gloria Sheppard, a single mother and detective in the LAPD homicide division. She'll play Gloria's mother beginning with this season's seventh episode. The newcomer bowed to a modest 1.895 million viewers this past Sunday, down significantly from its "Army Wives" lead-in (3.609 million).
UNTITLED BETHENNY FRANKEL PROJECT (Syndication, New!) - Bravo mainstay Bethenny Frankel ("Bethenny Ever After") is currently taping a pilot for an advice-based talk show from Telepictures. Ellen DeGeneres is reportedly involved with the project, presumably a syndicated offering for next season, as part of her overall deal with Warner Bros. Television. "I want to be on TV in a format where I can have a longer conversation with my fans rather than 140 characters on Twitter," Frankel told THR.com earlier this year. "It probably will be a talk show."
VIAGRA DIARIES (HBO, New!) - Oscar-winner Goldie Hawn ("Cactus Flower") and Emmy-winner Darren Star ("Sex and the City") are set to team for a potential comedy at the pay channel based on Barbara Rose Brooker's book of the same name. Star in on board to pen the half-hour, which would star Hawn as "a woman who, after her husband has a 'mid-life crisis' at 65 and leaves her, struggles with being single for the first time in 35 years." The pair then would also executive produce alongside Aaron Kaplan, and Wendy, Peter and Alan Riche.
