MTV CHRONICLES THE LIFE OF RAPPER CORY GUNZ IN THE NEW DOCU-SERIES "SON OF A GUN" SET TO AIR ON THURSDAY, APRIL 28 AT 11PM ET/PT
New York, NY - January 31, 2011 - MTV today announced it will document the journey of talented up and coming rapper Cory Gunz in the new docu-series "Son of a Gun." Executive produced by Nick Cannon, this compelling six-part series takes viewers behind the scenes and into the world of Cory Gunz as he faces the tough decisions artists encounter as they're struggling to succeed in the competitive and cutthroat music industry. Lucky for Gunz, he has some extra support in his quest for hip-hop stardom from a few people who know the business well; guiding and managing Cory are his father, rapper Peter Gunz and multi-talented industry mogul Nick Cannon, who lends his advice to help Cory reach his full potential. Together, Nick and Peter Gunz form a strong alliance to propel Cory to stardom. "Son of a Gun" premieres on Thursday, April 28 at 11pm ET/PM.
"Cory's story is inspiring, one that boldly paints the many trials and tribulations he's had to endure in pursuit of his dreams." said Nick Cannon, executive producer of "Son of a Gun." "I'm grateful for the access that Cory and Peter allowed us to have in order to create a series that we feel will really resonate with MTV viewers."
"Were bringing our viewers the raw and unfiltered story of a young man learning to cope with the industry's ups and downs, while on the cusp of becoming a breakout success" said Chris Linn, Executive Vice President, Programming & Head of Production, MTV. "We're excited to work with such a gifted artist and share his incredible journey with the MTV audience."
By traditional standards, with no major label debut, Cory would be considered a newcomer but that is hardly the case. Raised in the Bronx by his father, Peter Gunz, a rapper whose resume includes the 90's hit-single "Dj vu (Uptown Baby)" with Lord Tariq, Corey has been around music his entire life and signed his first record deal with Casablanca Records when he was just 16-years-old. Casablanca released Cory from his agreement to sign with iconic Def Jam Recordings (after being recruited by then president JAY-Z) but unfortunately having been denied a release date Cory went on to sign with independent label After Platinum. After so many false starts most people would have given up and found another career but luckily for music fans that wasn't an option for Cory. Despite lack of label support for his music Cory kept his name relevant with a continuous stream of songs, freestyles, mix tapes and DVD appearances. It was that work ethic that recently landed him a new record deal with Young Money Entertainment. With a star turn on "6'7'", Lil' Wayne's first single since being released from prison, the time is now for the spotlight to shine on Cory Gunz.
"Son of a Gun" is Executive Produced by Nick Cannon through his NCredible Entertainment production entity. MTV's Tiffany Lea Williams is Executive Producer. Chris Linn is EVP, Programming & Head of MTV Production. Concept by Nick Cannon.
