LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- "Just five years ago - actually, five years ago this month - we announced the formation of The CW network," Dawn Ostroff, the netlet's President of Entertainment told reporters at the TCA Winter Press Tour. "And in that time we have cultivated a distinct brand and identity that's instantly recognizable as culturally current, smartly provocative, and cutting-edge."
Ostroff was on hand to deliver opening remarks prior to The CW's two sessions at the TCA Winter Press Tour - "Shedding for the Wedding," premiering Wednesday, February 23, and "The Kick-Ass Women of The CW" - rather than a formal executive session.
"We're up 9 percent in total viewers this season, and we're up 10 percent in adults 18-49," she said in the prepared statement. "We've had more growth than any other network in these demos. And we've been holding steady in adults 18-34. And I have to say in today's environment, that's a major accomplishment."
Ostroff added that this fall, "unique viewers to cwtv.com has increased 77 percent over a year ago. And viewers are watching 59 percent more episodic video on our site than last year. So with the increased commercial loads and growth in traffic, streaming is now generating significant additional revenue for us."
She likewise touted the network's freshman dramas "Nikita" and "Hellcats," the latter of which moves to Tuesday nights on January 25. "When 'Nikita' returns in two weeks from now, we'll see the storyline evolving into a new and exciting direction. For those of you who watch the show, Alex will be leaving the Division and secretly teaming up with Nikita out in the field. We'll learn more about their relationships and see more personal and emotional sides of their life, which we think will make them more relatable for our fans."
Overall there were no real announcements made other than its drama pilot "Danni Lowinski" began shooting this morning. "It's a drama about a young female lawyer based on a popular German format," she said. "And we'll be picking up more pilots in the next few weeks, so stay tuned."
