ACCLAIMED ACTRESS, MOTHER AND ACTIVIST UNITES WITH WE TV, ENCOURAGING WOMEN ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO MAKE AN EARLY NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION: PLEDGE 24 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE
Nixon to Appear in WE Volunteer PSAs to Debut on WE tv in Early 2010
NEW YORK, NY - December 17, 2009 - Actress/mother/activist Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City) joins forces with WE tv's national public affairs campaign WE Volunteer (www.WEVolunteer.tv), lending her voice to inspire women to discover the power of volunteering. The announcement was made today by WE tv's President and General Manager Kim Martin and Ms. Nixon in the heart of NYC - Times Square.
As a campaign volunteer, Nixon will help to inform women of all ages about the importance of community volunteerism. Launched in April, WE Volunteer is WE tv's latest WE Empowers Women initiative encouraging women and the people in their lives to volunteer locally for one day (24 hours). The campaign makes it easy for women to learn how to volunteer in their communities, and the www.WEVolunteer.tv database allows them to quickly identify and connect with local organizations of personal interest. For Nixon, her passion lies with The Alliance for Quality Education, a NY state non-profit organization that seeks to give every child a high-quality public education. Nixon will make her WE Volunteer debut in two new Public Service Announcements (PSA) set to be filmed this winter, and which will begin airing multiple times daily beginning in early 2010 on WE tv.
Nixon said: "I am so proud to support WE tv's WE Volunteer and its "Pledge 24 in 2010" campaign. We all know it's vital that we reach out to help lend a hand. As a mother of two children it is very important to me that our schools help all kids reach their potential. Ensuring access to meaningful educational opportunities for all kids is the most important issue facing city and state leaders. Every child deserves a meaningful education. I will continue to fight for my daughter and my son and all the kids who are currently being shortchanged."
Martin noted, "As a woman, a working mother and a public advocate, Cynthia Nixon epitomizes the WE tv brand and the message of WE Volunteer that volunteering just one day a year makes a difference in the lives of the people and special causes we help," said Martin. "Cynthia is a respected role model for millions of women nationwide. We are thrilled and proud that she is joining WE tv's efforts to inspire women to give back to their communities."
The new PSAs starring Nixon follows in the footsteps of the campaign's launch "What a Difference a Day Makes" PSAs, which drove home the message that volunteering doesn't have to be overwhelming. The launch PSAs focused on healthcare, economy and education issues in response to initial viewer feedback (ages 18-49) about women's top priority areas of concern.
The Alliance for Quality Education (AQE) has quickly become New York state's lead community-based organization in the fight for high quality public education. A statewide non-profit, AQE unites a coalition of over 230 organizations of parents, children's advocates, schools, teachers, clergy, and others. Working with parents and youth, AQE serves to empower and inspire a life-long commitment to responsible, philanthropic involvement. Since her daughter started kindergarten in 2001, Nixon has been an active spokesperson in the campaign to get more funding for our public schools. Ms. Nixon is a parent of two children, a daughter and a son.
Nixon is an Emmy and Tony-award winning actress. She is currently in production on Sex and the City: the Movie 2, the sequel to New Line's 2008 summer blockbuster, which will be released by Warner Bros on May 28, 2010. Born and raised in New York City, Nixon attended Hunter College High School and has a degree in English Literature from Barnard College. She and her fianc Christine live in New York City with their daughter, Samantha, and son, Charlie.
WE Volunteer (www.WEVolunteer.tv), motivates women to become more involved in their communities by connecting them with local causes that they are passionate about and encouraging them to volunteer. WE Volunteer is the latest campaign of WE Empowers Women, the network's four-year-old public affairs initiative dedicated creating programs that foster and celebrate women's strength, confidence and diversity. The campaign's website, powered by VolunteerMatch, makes it easy to search for and sign up for volunteer experiences with nonprofit organizations based on location and personal interest. The site also allows participants to track the amount of hours volunteered and share their volunteer stories to inspire others. Each person that takes the pledge will be automatically entered in the network's "Chic in the City" grand sweepstakes for the opportunity to win a trip for two to New York City to attend a fabulous red carpet movie premiere and after-party, two-night stay at a boutique hotel, dinner at trendy New York hot spot, and a shopping spree at Saks Fifth Avenue, to name a few.
