Sacramento Hosts The 2nd Annual Citywide Competition of GSN's 'National Vocabulary Championship' Thursday, November 15th

Area Students Brush-Up on Vocabulary Skills for a Chance to Compete for a $5,000 Prize and a Spot in the National Finals

Comcast Sponsored Event to be Held at Rosemont High School

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Oct. 15 -- Students from over 34 area high schools are preparing to best their peers in a war of words. The National Vocabulary Championship (NVC) comes to Sacramento with a citywide competition in which the top 100 vocabulary students in the region will compete for money toward college and an opportunity to advance to the NVC finals. Sponsored by Comcast and hosted by Rosemont High School, the live event takes place Thursday, November 15, 2007 from 5:30PM-8:30PM.

The National Vocabulary Championship is an educational initiative conceived by GSN (Game Show Network) and its NVC educational partner, The Princeton Review. The nationwide academic competition, which is open to eligible students in grades 9-12 and between the ages of 13-19, goes beyond traditional 'spelling bees' by testing word definitions and comprehension.

Sacramento-area students with the top 100 scores on an in-school qualifying exam offered by participating high schools in the area will qualify to participate in the live game show-style event. The winner of the Citywide Championship will receive $5,000 toward college tuition and earn a guaranteed spot in the NVC finals to be held in spring 2008 in Los Angeles, CA. There, he or she will compete against 49 other top word-whizzes from across the country. The teen who best demonstrates his or her mastery of vocabulary after three rounds of competition will be crowned 'National Vocabulary Champion' and win $40,000 toward college tuition.

"With help from our friends at Comcast, we're delighted to once again bring this program to Sacramento," commented Dennis Gillespie, senior vice president of distribution, GSN. "We've made a real effort to reach teachers and students at the local level, and the response has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Our goal of promoting the value of a powerful vocabulary to high schoolers has only gained momentum in its second year."

Comcast Cable, sponsor of this and other educational initiatives in the area, has again lent support to the National Vocabulary Championship. "Our partners at GSN have created a world-class event with the National Vocabulary Championship, and Comcast is honored to bring it back to the Capital Region as part of our ongoing commitment to the community," said Dan McCarty, area vice president for Comcast.

Adri Walker from Laguna Creek High School in Elk Grove was crowned Sacramento's first NVC Citywide Champion during last year's event and subsequently competed in the inaugural NVC finals.

Sacramento-area students who do not attend a participating high school or who do not take the in-school qualifying exam are still eligible to participate in the National Vocabulary Championship by competing in the National Qualifying Competition. Interested students are encouraged to take the online National Qualifying Exam at http://www.winwithwords.com any time throughout the month of November. Top scorers will be invited to take the in- person Regional Exam on January 12, 2008, and up to 42 top scorers from the National Qualifying Competition will be flown to Los Angeles to compete in the NVC finals.
