SHOWTIME NETWORKS GREENLIGHTS DREAMWORKS COMEDY PILOT, "THE UNITED STATES OF TARA"
Search Underway For Actress to Portray Multiple Personality Housewife
(Los Angeles, CA.-July 14, 2007)- Showtime Networks and DreamWorks Television will begin production this fall on The United States of Tara, a half hour single camera comedy pilot about a mother who has multiple personality syndrome, it was announced today by Robert Greenblatt, president of entertainment for Showtime Networks.
"The United States of Tara" is a family comedy with a twist. In addition to the main character-Tara-being a wife and mother of two teenagers, at times she also might become an aggressive male biker, or a promiscuous teenage girl, or a cake-baking Martha Stewart-like homemaker. And more personalities may emerge from her as the series unfolds. While a comedy, the series doesn't ridicule Tara's condition, though often the situations are very funny. Rather, it balances the very real drama and comedy of a family dealing with an affliction that complicates everyone's lives.
"Ever since I heard this idea-WEEDS meets SYBIL-I thought it was a perfect fit for Showtime Networks since our hallmark is series with flawed main characters," said Greenblatt in making the announcement at the annual press tour for national television critics. "We look forward to finding an extraordinary actress who wants to step into this tour-de-force role," he added.
"I have long admired the programming creativity of Bob Greenblatt and Showtime, so I am enormously pleased that we will be doing this show for them," said Steven Spielberg. "They have brought bold new concepts and shows to television and their audiences have responded. We hope that our comedy can add to their success, and all of us here at DreamWorks look forward to this new association."
The United States of Tara, from DreamWorks Television, is being written and produced by Diablo Cody, who most recently wrote the screenplay for the Fox Searchlight film "Juno." Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank are executive producers.
