And the Big Winner of the Night Was ... YOU! At-Home Viewers Took Center
Stage with Interactive Web Wall and New "Best Movie Spoof" Winner
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., June 3 -- MTV pushed the limits
for the "2007 MTV Movie Awards" as it aired LIVE for the first time
welcoming stars, celebrities and fans alike. Hosted by the incomparable
Sarah Silverman, the sixteenth annual ceremony celebrated the audiences'
favorite performances and films, and most importantly honored the fans for
the first time ever. The 2007 MTV Movie Awards welcomed legendary actors
Jack Nicholson and Johnny Depp as they made their first-ever appearance at
the ceremony. The night also featured heart-stopping and eye-popping
performances by Rihanna, featuring Jay-Z as they performed "Umbrella," the
#1 song in the country. And making her first-ever live U.S. television
debut, British singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse brought the house down with
her electrifying performance of hit single, "Rehab."
"Best Performance" honors went to Johnny Depp for his role in "Pirates
of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." The MTV audience celebrated Gerard
Butler and The Uber Immortal who won "Best Fight" for their performance in
"300." Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen won "Best Kiss" for "Talladega
Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," making it the second year in a row that
guys have snagged the best kiss award. Sacha Baron Cohen also took home
"Best Comedic Performance" for "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for
Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" and "Transformers" beat out
seven other yet to be released films winning the award for "Best Summer
Movie You Haven't Seen Yet."
The night started off in true Sarah Silverman style as she kept the
censors on their toes with a song whose only airable words were "flippety
floppety."
Mike Myers once again had one of the most memorable moments of the
night as he accepted the "MTV Generation Award" presented by "Shrek the
Third" co- star Cameron Diaz. Recognizing him for his dynamic career and
acting roles that have captured and entertained MTV audiences for years,
Myers accepted the award in true comedic fashion, with an ode to Austin
Powers and a mojo-induced dance number.
Newcomer Jaden Smith accepted his first-ever award show win for
"Breakthrough Performance," in an over-the-top and side-splitting home
video fitting for a kid with superstar parents Will Smith and Jada
Pinkett-Smith.
As always, the MTV Movie Awards was filled with laugh-out-loud film
parodies including "Boratitis," with Susan Sarandon, Kevin Spacey, Marilyn
Manson, Amanda Bynes, Matt Dillon, Aaron Eckhart, Heather Graham, Jennifer
Hudson, Eva Mendes, Ryan Reynolds and T.I., raising awareness of the
spreading epidemic, "Boratitis," which finds people unable to stop
imitating everyone's favorite Kazakhstani.
Saying goodbye to boring award show music when acceptance speeches run
too long, the "2007 MTV Movie Awards" introduced a naked fat man, a la Ken
Davitian's character in "Borat," chasing winners off the stage.
The "2007 MTV Movie Awards" also invited viewers to take control of the
night as MTV rolled out the first-ever "Best Movie Spoof" category where
they had the opportunity to submit their own original movie shorts
parodying films from the past year. MTV and Yahoo! partnered to launch this
interactive website via Yahoo! Movies which explored the convergence of
entertainment and technology like never before. In the weeks leading up to
the show, fans submitted more than 400 film spoofs and throughout the
contest the finalists received over 250,000 votes combined.
The Web Wall kept a constant flow of fans in the spotlight and on the
stage as Sarah interacted with the viewers at home. While Sarah searched
for a presenter for the "Breakthrough Performance" category she turned to
the all- important Web Wall for a viewer to save the day.
Under Surveillance & On Demand - MTV.com covered all the action on the
carpet and backstage that fans didn't see on TV. There were cameras all
over the backstage area -- from green rooms, to dressing rooms -- giving
viewers rare glimpses as only MTV could provide. Exclusive interviews with
winners and presenters were also available on MTV.com only. This year we
truly did not know a winner until the last possibly minute, as the MTV
Movie Awards left the "Best Movie" Category open throughout the show for
live voting.
The "2007 MTV Movie Awards" welcomed the biggest names in music, movies
and more throughout the night. Presenters included Cameron Diaz, Jessica
Biel, John Krasinski, Mandy Moore, Robin Williams, Justin Long, Bruce
Willis, Jessica Alba, Josh Duhamel, Samuel L. Jackson, Amanda Bynes, Chris
Tucker, Seth Rogen, Shia LaBeouf, Michael Chiklis, John Travolta, Zac
Efron, Tyrese Gibson, Andy Samberg, Chris Evans and Ioan Gruffudd join the
growing list of presenters at the "2007 MTV Movie Awards." And MTV welcomed
Victoria Beckham as she made the "2007 MTV Movie Awards" her first official
television appearance since moving to the states.
