NBC's Telecast of 'The 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards' Takes Home the #1 Ranking of the Week

NBC'S TELECAST OF 'THE 58th ANNUAL PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS' TAKES HOME THE #1 RANKING OF THE WEEK

BURBANK, Calif. � August 29, 2006 � Paced by "The 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards," which was the week's #1 telecast in adults 18-49, total viewers and other key measures, NBC averaged a 2.2 rating, 7 share in adults 18-49 and 6.8 million viewers overall for the week of August 21-18, according to in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research. An estimated 35.1 million viewers watched all or part of the telecast, which was hosted by Conan O'Brien.

"The 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards" ranked #1 this week (out of a total 110 programs) in adults 18-49, total viewers and other key measures, including adults 18-34 and adults 25-54. In fact, no primetime telecast on any network has delivered higher 18-49 or total-viewer results since June.

Primetime averages for the week of August 21-27 in adults 18-49 were CBS (2.3/7), NBC and ABC (2.2/7), Fox (2.1/7), Univision (1.6/5), UPN and WB (0.7/2) and Telemundo (0.4/1). In overall total viewers the weekly averages were CBS (7.3 million), NBC (6.8 million), ABC (6.1 million), Fox (5.9 million), Univision (3.4 million), UPN (1.8 million), WB (1.7 million) and Telemundo (0.8 million).

Versus the same week last year, NBC was up 16 percent in adults 18-49, marking the seventh consecutive week NBC has topped its 18-49 rating of the year-ago week.

Since the end of the traditional broadcast season, NBC is running #2 (tied with CBS) in adults 18-49. The current summer-to-date averages in 18-49 are Fox (2.4), NBC and CBS (2.1) and ABC (1.9) for the period May 25-August 27, 2006.

NBC highlights for the week of August 21-27:

* The Emmy telecast delivered the highest 18-49 rating for any primetime telecast on any network since the sixth game of the NBA Finals June 20 and the largest average total viewership for any telecast since the "Deal or No Deal" season finale on June 5

* Despite unusual competition from the blockbuster film "Pirates of the Caribbean" on ABC, the "Emmy Awards" won all six of its half-hours on Sunday night in adults 18-49, total viewers and other key ratings measures, and was up 126 percent in 18-49 rating versus NBC's summer-to-date average for the time period.

* On Monday, the finale of "Treasure Hunters" matched its highest 18-49 rating since its Monday debut eight weeks ago and unearthed its largest total viewership for any Monday telecast, second only to its special Sunday debut on June 18.

Excluding sports, 18-49 averages for the 2005-06 broadcast year to date are Fox (a 3.5 rating), CBS (3.3), ABC (3.1), NBC (2.8), WB (1.1) and UPN (1.1). This summer, non-sports 18-49 averages are: Fox (a 2.3 rating), NBC (2.2), CBS (2.1), ABC (1.8), UPN (0.7) and WB (0.7).

Ratings reflect "live plus same day" data unless otherwise noted. Season-to-date figures are averages of live only results through Dec. 25 and "live plus seven day" data since then, except for the two most recent weeks, which are live plus same day.

Additional NBC highlights for the week of August 21-27:

On Monday, August 21 at 9 p.m. ET, the finale of "Treasure Hunters" (2.4 rating, 6 share in adults 18-49, 6.0 million viewers overall) matched its highest 18-49 rating in eight weeks (since June 26) and unearthed its largest total viewership since the series premiere on Sunday, June 18. "Treasure Hunters" built by 60 percent in 18-49 rating versus its lead-in from the previous hour � a 1.5/5 in 18-49 and 4.1 million viewers overall from 8-9 p.m. for an encore "Treasure Hunters."

On Tuesday, August 22 from 8-9 p.m. ET, "Fear Factor" (1.9/6 in 18-49, 5.0 million viewers overall) ranked #2 in adults 18-49. At 9 p.m., an encore "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" (2.3/6 in 18-49, 7.1 million viewers overall) built on its lead-in by 21 percent in adults 18-49. At 10 p.m., a rebroadcast of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (2.8/8 in 18-49, 9.6 million viewers overall) built on its lead-in by 22 percent in 18-49 rating to finish 0.1 of a rating point out of the time-period lead in 18-49. "SVU" ranked #1 for the hour in adults 25-54 (tie) and in total viewers.

On Wednesday, August 23 from 8:30-9 p.m. ET an encore telecast of "Most Outrageous Moments" (2.3/7 in adults 18-49, 6.7 million viewers overall) was #2 in the time period in 18-49 and #1 in total viewers, having built by 21 percent in 18-49 rating on its lead-in, a 1.9/7 in 18-49 and 5.8 million viewers overall for a "Most Outrageous Moments" rebroadcast from 8-8:30 p.m.

Also on Wednesday, at 9 p.m. ET, an encore "Scrubs" (2.0/6 in 18-49, 4.6 million viewers overall) was #2 in adults 18-49 and #1 among women 18-34 (tie), men 18-49 and men 25-54 (tie). A second encore "Scrubs" from 9:30-10 p.m. averaged a 1.9/6 and 4.2 million viewers overall. At 10 p.m., an encore "Law & Order" averaged a 2.2/6 in 18-49 and 6.5 million viewers overall.

On Thursday, August 24 at 8 p.m. ET, an encore "My Name is Earl" averaged a 1.9/7 in 18-49 and 5.3 million viewers overall. At 8:30 p.m., a rebroadcast of "The Office" delivered a 1.8/6 in 18-49 and 4.1 million viewers overall and at 9 p.m., an encore of "The Office" averaged a 1.9/6 and 4.0 million viewers overall. The 9:30 p.m. encore of "The Office" delivered a 2.1/6 in 18-49 and 4.2 million viewers overall. And at 10 p.m., "Windfall" delivered a 1.8/5 in 18-49 and 4.1 million viewers overall.

On Saturday, August 26 at 10 p.m. ET, an encore "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" (1.5/5 in 18-49, 5.3 million viewers overall) built by 25 percent on its 18-49 lead-in from the previous hour � a 1.2/4 in 18-49 and 4.2 million viewers overall for a "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" rebroadcast from 9-10 p.m.

On Sunday, August 27 from 8-11 p.m. ET, "The 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards" (5.2/13 in adults 18-49, 16.2 million viewers overall) delivered the highest 18-49 rating for any primetime telecast on any network since ABC's telecast of game six of the NBA Finals (a 6.5/19 on June 20) and the highest total viewership for any primetime telecast on any network since the season finale of "Deal or No Deal" on NBC (18.2 million viewers on June 5).

Despite unusual competition from ABC's telecast of the hit film "Pirates of the Caribbean," the "Emmy Awards" ranked #1 in adults 18-49, total viewers and other key ratings measures every half-hour from 8-11 p.m. The awards telecast was up 126 percent in 18-49 rating versus NBC's summer-to-date average for the time period (5.2 vs. 2.3).

Sunday from 7-8 p.m., "The 2006 Emmy Red Carpet Special," (1.9/6 in 18-49, 7.2 million viewers overall) was up 27 percent versus NBC's summer-to-date average for the time period (1.9 vs. 1.5). In total viewers, it was NBC's top audience in the hour with non-sports programming in nearly four months (since "Dateline NBC" on April 30). Versus the most recent comparable telecast, ABC's "Countdown to Emmy" special in 2004, "The 2006 Emmy Red Carpet Special" was up 12 percent in 18-49 rating (1.9 vs. 1.7) and 1.2 million viewers overall. There was no special Emmy coverage prior to last year's telecast due to a football overrun.
