'Legal' In, 'Chief' Out as ABC's Upfront Nears

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- With just two weeks left until it announces its 2006-07 season lineup, ABC has renewed its sophomore entry "Boston Legal" for a third season and pulled its freshman drama "Commander-In-Chief" for the remainder of the May sweeps period.

The latter news comes after "Chief" hit a series low of 6.5 million viewers and a 1.8 rating/5 share among adults 18-49 for its most-recent airing. "Primetime," which had been bumped to Friday nights to make room for "Chief," will return to the Thursday, 10:00/9:00c hour tomorrow night.

While "Chief" has not been officially canceled, the move more than likely kills any chance of "Chief" returning next season. It's understood the remaining produced installments will air next month after May sweeps concludes.

As for "Legal," the David E. Kelley-produced series remains the network's sole bright spot on Tuesday nights with 10.37 million viewers on average tuning in.

ABC tentpoles "Desperate Housewives," "Lost," "Grey's Anatomy" and "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" are also widely believed to have been renewed for next season, as are mid-tier series "Supernanny," "America's Funniest Home Videos" and "Wife Swap." The network however has yet to confirm any additional renewals.
