BROOKE SHIELDS DISCUSSES HER STRUGGLES WITH INFERTILITY ON THE NEXT EPISODE OF YOUR TOTAL HEALTH

Actress Talks About Potential of Postpartum Depression With Second Her Child

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. -- November 17, 2005 -- NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution's nationally syndicated weekly series "Your Total Health" sits down with Brooke Shields to discuss her struggles with infertility and her current second pregnancy. The episode airs the weekend of November 19th and 20th, 2005.

In the interview, Shields speaks openly with "Your Total Health" host Hoda Kotb about her personal struggles with infertility and postpartum depression. When discussing her infertility treatments, Shields says, "All I heard was you're never going to get pregnant. You're never going to be a mother, you are not normal."

In addition to the emotional pain Shields says she suffered while struggling to get pregnant for the first time, she also tells Kotb about the physical pain that came with taking fertility drugs. On a daily basis, Shields had to inject -or have others inject -fertility shots into her body. "If you don't do it properly, you could bleed, but it's more of an inconvenience," she says.

Finally, after a miscarriage and many months of treatments, Shields was able to conceive and gave birth to daughter Rowan, in May of 2003. After her daughter's birth, Shields says she suffered from postpartum depression, for which she sought professional help and was treated with medication. Shields chronicles the struggle in her book, "Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression."

Shields is now pregnant with her second child and says she is feeling fine. When asked by Kotb if she worries about postpartum the second time around or if she thinks about it, Shields replies, "I have to think about it and now I know what the signs are if anything goes askew, I will know." When asked if she'll take medication again if she suffers from postpartum, Shields says, "I am going to see; I don't know." She then adds, "The reality is, if it hits, you're hit. So I'm going to try to be a little more proactive."

"Your Total Health" is a weekly news program that helps viewers make sense of new technology and fast-moving developments of health and medicine. The show, which is based in New York, is hosted by Hoda Kotb, produced by NBC News and distributed in national syndication by NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution. Upcoming episodes will feature musician Melissa Etheridge and actress Raquel Welch.
