Led by TOP MODEL, EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS and the return of VERONICA MARS, UPN remains red hot through the first two weeks of the season (9/19/05-10/02/05) with impressive double digit increases across the board, including 29% in adults 18-34 (1.8/6), 23% in adults 18-49 (1.6/4), 25% in women 18-34 (2.5/7), 24% in women 18-49 (2.1/5) and 19% in total viewers (3.8mil).
For the week ending Oct. 2, UPN again beat the WB in the target demos of adults 18-34 (1.6/5) and women 18-34 (2.1/6),. For the second consecutive week, UPN was the number one network among female teens (2.3/8).
This week alone (9/26/05-10/02/05), UPN improved its performance versus the same week last year in all key demos, including 14% in adults 18-34 (1.6/5), 8% in adults 18-49 (1.4/4), 5% in women 18-34 (2.1/6), 6% women 18-49 (1.8/5), 8% in viewers (3.5mil).
MONDAY - 9/26/05
For the second straight week, UPN beat the WB on Monday in adults 18-34 (1.6/5 v. 1.4/4), women 18-34 (2.6/7 v. 2.0/5) and women 18-49 (2.3/6 v. 2.1/5).
GIRLFRIENDS and HALF & HALF again topped WB's "Just Legal" in viewers (3.5mil v. 3.0mil) and all key demos, including adults 18-34 (1.7/4 v. 0.9/2), women 18-34 (2.8/7 v. 1.1/3), adults 18-49 (1.6/4 v. 1.0/2) and women 18-49 (2.5/6 v. 1.3/3).
UPN's Monday continues to improve versus last year by 23% in adults 18-34, 7% in adults 18-49, 30% in women 18-34 and 10% in women 18-49
WEDNESDAY - 9/28/05
In Wednesday's heavily competitive 9-10pm hour, VERONICA MARS kicked off its second season with its largest audience (3.3mil) and best adults 18-34 (1.8/5), women 18-34 (2.5/6) and women 18-49 (1.8/4) EVER for the critically acclaimed series.
Compared to VERONICA's series premiere last year, which also followed TOP MODEL, the second season of VERONICA MARS got off to a much stronger start facing much tougher competition, scoring impressive year to year growth in all key demos, including 27% in viewers, 50% in adults 18-34, 32% in women 18-34, 18% in adults 18-49 and 29% in women 18-49.
VERONICA MARS has improved the time period versus where "Kevin Hill" left off last May by +0.3 rating points in adults 18-34 (1.8/5) and women 18-34 (2.5/6).
In its second week, AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL tied for first at 8-9pm among women 18-34 (3.7/11), behind only FOX, and third in adults 18-34 (2.5/8), behind only ABC and FOX.
In its regularly scheduled time period, TOP MODEL retained 100% of its audience from last week in viewers (4.5mil), adults 18-49 (2.1/6) and women 18-49 (3.1/8).
Overall for the night, UPN finished third in the key demographic of women 18-34 (3.1/8), behind only ABC and FOX.
THURSDAY - 9/29/05
On what is easily now television's most competitive night and in primetime's toughest hour, UPN's critically acclaimed hit EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS opened the new Thursday comedy block with tremendous year-to-year growth. From 8-8:30PM, CHRIS improved the time period by 68% in total viewers (6.0mil), 118% in adults 18-34 (2.4/8), 85% in adults 18-49 (2.4/7), 189% in women 18-34 (2.6/8) and 211% in women 18-49 (2.8/8) versus a year ago.
With a brand new night of series programming, UPN continued to deliver dramatic growth on Thursday (8-10PM) versus last year of 38% in adults 18-34 (1.8/5), 21% in adults 18-49 (1.7/4), 110% in women 18-34 (2.1/6) and 110% in women 18-49 (2.1/5).
Nationally, CHRIS beat "Alias" and "Smallville" from 8-8:30PM in women 18-34.
Based on Local People Meter data, EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS was still impressively competitive in week 2 in key major markets. CHRIS remained the number one show from 8-8:30pm in New York among adults 18-49 (3.9/11), beating all original network competition.
Additionally, CHRIS ranked second among adults 18-49 from 8-8:30 in Chicago (3.2/10-tie) and Philadelphia (5.0/12), beating "Joey," "Alias" and "Smallville." CHRIS ranked second in San Francisco (2.6/7-tie).
Among adults 18-34, CHRIS ranked first in New York (4.3/14-tie) and Philadelphia (6.1/16). CHRIS ranked second in Los Angeles (3.3/10) and Chicago (3.0/11), beating "Survivor," "Joey" and "Alias" in both markets.
Also driving UPN's year-to-year growth is LOVE, INC, which improved the year ago time period by 55% in adults 18-34 (1.7/5), 31% in adults 18-49 (1.7/4), 122% in women 18-34 (2.0/5) and 133% in women 18-49 (2.1/5).
In week 2, LOVE, INC retained 90% of its premiere audience in adults 18-34 and adults 18-49, 87% in women 18-34 and 88% in women 18-49.
EVE was up from last week's premiere by 13% in adults 18-34 (1.7/5) and 5% in women 18-34 (2.1/5). Week two of EVE also held on to 94% of its premiere total viewer audience (3.2mil), 93% of the adults 18-49 (1.4/4) and 95% of the women 18-49 (1.8/4).
CUTS built over last week's season premiere by 8% in adults 18-34 (1.4/4) and held 100% of its premiere audience in viewers (2.8mil), adults 18-49 (1.2/3), women 18-34 (1.8/4) and women 18-49 (1.5/3).
From 9-10:00PM, the combination of EVE and CUTS beat ABC's "Night Stalker" and WB's "Everwood" in women 18-34 (1.9/5).
FRIDAY - 9/30/05
FRIDAY NIGHT SMACKDOWN was third in its time period in adults 18-34 (1.4/5), behind only ABC and Fox. SMACKDOWN ranked first in men 18-34 (1.6/7) and was second in men 18-49 (1.6/6).
SMACKDOWN improved on the year-ago time period average in total viewers (+119%), adults 18-49 (+63%), adults 18-34 (+40%), men 18-49 (+220%) and men 18-34 (+167%).
