FOX's February Sweeps: Reality Central
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- Reality series will not be stranger to FOX next month as at least 50% of the network's February sweeps schedule will be devoted to unscripted programming. The current tally has at least 30 hours of its 60-hour, 28-day schedule featuring everything from "American Idol" to "The Littlest Groom."

Here's a complete breakdown of FOX's February sweeps offerings (via press release). Please note that some episode descriptions may contain spoilers for future storylines.

FOX invites you to come in from the cold this February with red-hot guest stars, smoking new series, sizzling specials and all-new original episodes.

FOX series ratchet up the heat when four-time Emmy Award-nominated COPS celebrates its 550th episode on Saturday, Feb. 7; OLIVER BEENE makes its second-season premiere on Sunday, Feb. 8; and Emmy Award-winning MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE airs its 100th hilarious episode on Sunday, Feb. 22. On the variety front, the mercury rises even more when viewers get their first chance to vote for their favorite AMERICAN IDOL contestants on Tuesday, Feb. 10 and see the results on the first LIVE episode of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 11; find out how Randi Coy and her unsuspecting family deal with the shock of their lives on the series finale of MY BIG FAT OBNOXIOUS FIANC on Monday, Feb. 23; and taste the forbidden fruit with the two-part series premiere of FOREVER EDEN, the first-ever open-ended, unscripted soap opera, on Monday, March 1 and Tuesday, March 2.

Adding fuel to the fire are the World Broadcast Premieres of THE PLANET OF THE APES on Thursday, Feb. 19 and LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER on Thursday, Feb. 26; and the original FOX specials THE LITTLEST GROOM on Mondays, Feb. 16 and 23; THE GREAT AMERICAN CELEBRITY SPELLING BEE 2004 on Fridays, Feb. 13, 20 and 27; and MAN VS. BEAST 2 on Friday, Feb. 20.

Here are the highlights, night by night, for this February Sweeps on FOX.

Superstars set Arlen, Texas, ablaze on KING OF THE HILL this month. On Sunday, Feb. 8 (7:00-7:30 PM ET/PT), Hank gets sexually harassed by Buck Strickland's new employee, Rich (guest voice Ben Stiller). As the situation escalates, Hank decides to teach Rich a lesson on "That's What She Said." The following week, on Sunday, Feb. 15 (7:00-7:30 PM ET/PT), Luanne and Bill go to work at a trendy beauty salon, where Bill splits hairs with star stylist Colette (guest voice Christina Applegate) on the "My Hair Lady" episode.

The "Phish & Wildlife" episode of KING OF THE HILL, airing Sunday, Feb. 22 (7:00-7:30 PM ET/PT), boasts the vocal talents of Melissa Etheridge, Jamie Kennedy and Fred Willard. When Hank takes Bobby and the guys on a fishing trip, they camp out next to a bunch of hippies (guest voices Etheridge, Kennedy and Willard). But when the fish stop swimming, Bobby's new hippie friends tempt him with some fresh gumbo, and Hank is forced to teach them a thing or two about living off the fruits of the land.

OLIVER BEENE, the timeless comedy about a kid growing up in the '60s, makes a triumphant return to FOX with its second-season premiere on Sunday, Feb. 8 (7:30-8:00 PM ET/PT). On the "Soup to Nuts" episode, Oliver fears being nicknamed when he accidentally spills a thermos of soup on himself, but no one sees it happen. Can Oliver set the record straight and shake the stigma, or will he always be known as "the kid who threw up on the bus"?

The following week (Sunday, Feb. 15, 7:30-8:00 PM ET/PT) features another all-new episode of OLIVER BEENE, and then Richard Kind guest-stars as Barnaby Rollins, owner of Astounding Novelties, on "The X-Ray Specs" episode on Sunday, Feb. 22 (7:30-8:00 PM ET/PT). Oliver sends away for a cool new pair of X-Ray Specs advertised in his comic book, but it isn't until he receives the glasses that he can see clearly through Barnaby's mail-order scams.

Two all-new episodes of THE SIMPSONS (Sundays, Feb. 8 and 15, 8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT) get viewers ready for Mr. Nasty. AMERICAN IDOL host Simon Cowell is sure to steam up Springfield when he parodies himself as a tough school admissions committee member who grills Maggie on the "Smart & Smarter" episode on Sunday, Feb. 22 (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT).

On THE BERNIE MAC SHOW Sunday, Feb. 8 (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT), Bernie and Wanda host a Mac family reunion barbecue for about 50 of Bernie's extended relatives, including cousin Lou (guest star Tommy Davidson), who harasses Bernie. And, on Sunday, Feb. 15 (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT), Bernie takes a role because the film stars Bryana's favorite character, Droobie (guest star David Faustino), a Barney-like dinosaur. But Bryana, unable to separate fiction and reality, is upset that Bernie plays the film's villain and is mean to her cherished Droobie on the "Droobie or Not Droobie" episode.

To get viewers ready for the two-hour Championship Round of THE GREAT AMERICAN CELEBRITY SPELLING BEE 2004 (airing Friday, Feb. 27 8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), THE BERNIE MAC SHOW presents "J-O-R-D-A-N Spells Funny" on Sunday, Feb. 22 (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT). On the episode, Bernie finds out that Jordan is an excellent speller who will compete in the upcoming spelling bee championship. To help alleviate Jordan's stage fright, Bernie suggests starting off with a good joke, but it becomes apparent rather quickly that the apple falls very far from the Mac family tree.

On MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE Sunday, Feb. 8 (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT), Cloris Leachman reprises her hilarious turn as Grandma Ida. On the "Ida's Boyfriend" episode, Grandma shows up for a surprise visit to deliver some shocking news to the family she's getting married! Another all-new episode, "Softball," is hit out of the park the following week (Sunday, Feb. 15, 9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT).

We may not know Lois' last name, exactly what Hal does for a living or where Malcolm and his brothers live, but we do know that MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE reaches its landmark 100th episode Sunday, Feb. 22 (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT). In "Lois' Sister," Lois' younger sister, Susan (guest star Laurie Metcalf), arrives with expensive gifts for the boys, biting remarks for Lois and a cold shoulder for Hal whom she has never forgiven for dumping her for Lois. But when Lois discovers that Susan needs a kidney transplant, she puts her anger aside and offers to donate her kidney to Susan, which Susan only sees as the perfect opportunity for Lois to one-up her.

FOX's critically acclaimed new comedy ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT gets some extra-hot star power this February, when Liza Minnelli, Henry Winkler and Heather Graham drop in on the Bluth clan. Minnelli continues her hysterical, scene-stealing turn as socialite Lucille 2 on the "Marta Complex" episode of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT on Sunday, Feb. 8 (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT), and the following week, on Sunday, Feb. 15 (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT), Winkler is Barry Zuckerhorn, the Bluth family attorney who is trying to get George Sr. out of jail, on the "Beef Consomm" episode.

On Sunday, Feb. 22 (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT), Graham guest-stars on the "Shock & Aww" episode of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, portraying Beth Baerly, George Michael's ethics teacher, on whom he has a major crush. When Michael attends Parent-Teacher Night at his son's school, he ends up falling for her himself. As their relationship progresses and George Michael reveals his crush, Michael is forced to make an ethical decision: Should he stay with the hot teacher or break it off for his son?

FOX Monday during February Sweeps follows two very special grooms down the aisle in ways that only FOX can. Starting Monday, Feb. 16 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), THE LITTLEST GROOM will venture where no other show has gone before by helping a young man who is 4'5" tall to find true love. Initially believing he will choose among women of similar stature to his own, he later discovers, in a surprising twist, that some average-sized women will enter the picture. You'll find out who his ideal mate is when the two-part special concludes on Monday, Feb. 23 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).

The same night, on Monday, Feb. 23 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), another man attempts to say "I do" on the thrilling series finale of MY BIG FAT OBNOXIOUS FIANC. If Steve's faux bride, Randi -- and her unsuspecting family -- can make it all the way through the wedding ceremony, she'll win a million dollars. But, how will she react when she learns that the ultimate practical joke is actually on her? What will she do when she finds out that Steve is not a reality show contestant like herself but an actor who's been trying to make her dash for cash as taxing as possible?

The following Monday, March 1 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), FOX recaps the year's worst contenders on the all-new special AMERICAN IDOL: BEST OF THE WORST 2004, and then unveils FOREVER EDEN (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), a new series breaking ground as the first open-ended unscripted soap opera, with contestants aiming to stay on the show for weeks, months and possibly even years. The series premiere will be a two-night event, with the first part airing Monday, March 1 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), and the second part airing the following night, on Tuesday, March 2 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).

AMERICAN IDOL really heats up this February Sweeps, starting Tuesday, Feb. 10 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), when America gets a look at and a listen to the first eight of the 32 semifinalists. The chosen few will perform for the first time, and then the voting begins! The subsequent three weeks (Tuesdays, Feb. 17 and 24 and Tuesday, March 2, 8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) will see the remaining AMERICAN IDOL semifinalists perform.

Following AMERICAN IDOL, FOX delivers three all-new episodes of the nail-biting thriller 24 (Tuesdays, Feb. 10, 17 and 24, 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). Chase confronts Jack about why he wasn't included in the plans for obtaining the virus, and Jack explains the brutal truth about what it takes to be a CTU agent on the "Day 3: 1:00 AM 2:00 AM" episode Tuesday, Feb. 10 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). The following week, on Tuesday, Feb. 17 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), Chappelle considers pulling Jack from active duty after confronting him about his drug use on the "Day 3: 2:00 AM 3:00 AM" episode. Then, on the "Day 3: 3:00 AM 4:00 AM" episode (Tuesday, Feb. 24, 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), Jack must deal with due process questions following his sudden killing of a key material witness in the ongoing investigation for the viral terrorist threat. (The second part of the FOREVER EDEN two-part, two-night series premiere airs Tuesday March 2, 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT.)

Wednesday nights on FOX are sure to steam up the windows, with four all-new episodes of THAT '70s SHOW and THE O.C., as well as LIVE results from AMERICAN IDOL.

All-new episodes of THAT '70s SHOW are all-star to boot, as Shannon Elizabeth and Alyson Hannigan hit Wisconsin. On Wednesday, Feb. 11 (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT), Donna and Eric borrow Kelso's car without his permission and inadvertently roll it off a cliff. Kelso, who is supposed to take Brooke (guest star Elizabeth) to a doctor's appointment, realizes his car is gone and is forced to pick her up on his bike on the "I Can See for Miles" episode.

In a two-episode arc airing Wednesdays, Feb. 18 and 25 (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT), Hannigan plays Suzy Simpson, one of Kelso's fellow police academy cadets, who comes between Kelso and Fez when she falls for Fez on the "Suzy Simpson" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" episodes. Then, Elizabeth returns on the "Baby Don't You Do It" episode of THAT '70s SHOW (Wednesday, March 3, 8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT).

The LIVE results editions of AMERICAN IDOL premiere Wednesday, Feb. 11 (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT), when the eight semifinalists who performed Tuesday night return to the stage to find out their fate. When America's vote is revealed, two semifinalists will move on to the next round, while six will go home. For the remainder of February Sweeps, AMERICAN IDOL will continue to make dreams come true with LIVE results shows every week (Wednesdays, Feb. 18 and 25 and Wednesday, March 3, 8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT), counting down to the final 12 hopefuls.

On "The Truth" episode of THE O.C. (Wednesday, Feb. 11, 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), the first of four all-new original episodes, Oliver is exposed! The next week, on Wednesday, Feb. 18 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), it's Valentine's Day in Orange County. Marissa tries to mend her relationship with Ryan, but he can't forgive her for the situation with Oliver. Things become even more complicated when Theresa, Ryan's ex from Chino, arrives to cater the Valentine's Day dance. Meanwhile, Seth and Summer decide to take their friendship to a new level on "The Heartbreak" episode. Theresa continues to come between Ryan and Marissa on "The Telenovela" episode (Wednesday, Feb. 25, 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), and Anna makes a major announcement that affects the Seth-Summer-Anna love triangle on "The Goodbye Girl" episode (Wednesday, March 3, 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).

Temperatures continue to rise on Thursday nights on FOX this February with all-new episodes of TRU CALLING and World Broadcast Premiere movies.

On "The Longest Day" episode of TRU CALLING (Thursday, Feb. 5, 8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), Tru's mission intensifies when she finds herself reliving the same day a second time, after her attempt to save a gunshot victim leads to the death of an innocent bystander. As she tampers with events in an effort to simultaneously prevent two deaths, the complications snowball, and she soon finds herself trapped in time. Then, on the "Valentine" episode (Thursday, Feb. 12, 8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), Tru's Valentine's Day plans with Luc take an unexpected turn when they find themselves at a rundown resort with Harrison, Lindsay and a serial killer. When her day rewinds, her search for the killer leads her to the last person she would ever have suspected.

THE PLANET OF THE APES makes its World Broadcast Premiere on Thursday, Feb. 19 (8:00-10:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Director Tim Burton ("Big Fish") brings a fresh look to this remake of the classic story about an astronaut (Mark Wahlberg) who crash-lands on a planet where a highly developed ape society rules, while humans are in bondage and considered unintelligent. The film also stars Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter and Michael Clarke Duncan.

Angelina Jolie stars in LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER (Thursday, Feb. 26, 8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) as the brilliant and daring Lara Croft, born into wealth and privilege but more interested in pursuing her long-lost father's (Jon Voight) career of hunting for antiquities. This time, she's on the trail of an artifact bearing a magical triangle with an all-seeing eye, just in time for the rare planetary alignment that will activate its mysterious powers. But Laura's not the only one looking for the relic, and if it falls into the wrong hands, it could spell disaster.

On Friday, Feb. 6, FOX begins four weeks of FOX-ified original specials that feature unbelievable behavior, frisky animals, outrageous stunts and celebrities spelling for charity!

Witness the absurd and the crazy when FOX premieres THAT'S JUST WRONG (Friday, Feb. 6, 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), a wacky one-hour special hosted by "The Twins," Elaine and Diane, which features original stunts, contests and video clips of amazing and sometimes unbelievable behavior.

The following week, THE GREAT AMERICAN CELEBRITY SPELLING BEE 2004 (Friday, Feb. 13, 8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) gets under way. Brains will reign over beauty and brawn as FOX airs this all-new series of specials, which will have Hollywood celebrities brightest dusting off their dictionaries and breaking out their flash cards to compete in the ultimate old-fashioned intellectual challenge. Airing on three Fridays (Fridays, Feb. 13 and 20, 8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT and Friday, Feb. 27, 8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and concluding in an exciting two-hour championship finale, THE GREAT AMERICAN CELEBRITY SPELLING BEE 2004 pits 16 celebrities from television, film and music including Harry Anderson, Corbin Bernsen, "For Love or Money"'s Erin Brodie, rocker Alice Cooper, Brett Butler, "The Sopranos"' Vincent Pastore, Eric Roberts, Meshach Taylor and George Wendt against each other for charity.

We humans think we have it rough when it comes to romance -- but in the wild, "dating" can be a lot more complicated. On the eve of Valentine's Day, take an intimate look at some of the wildest, most bizarre and funniest mating rituals on the planet on NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL PRESENTS: WHEN ANIMALS ATTRACT (Friday, Feb. 13, 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).

Man meets his ultimate competitor in the second installment of the FOX special MAN VS. BEAST, airing Friday, Feb. 20 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). In MAN VS. BEAST 2, human participants will go head to head against animals in a series of competitions testing a variety of physical skills, and Olympic Gold Medalists Carl Lewis, Bart Connor and Dan O'Brien provide the commentary.
