ANAHEIM GOES FOR CLINCHER TOMORROW NIGHT ON NBC, 8 PM ET
CBC's Cherry during NBC Game 4 guest stint: "We should go back to rock 'em, sock 'em."
NEW YORK June 5, 2007 Iconic Canadian hockey broadcaster made a guest appearance in the NHL on NBC studio show during the second intermission of yesterday's Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, a 3-2 Anaheim Ducks victory over the Ottawa Senators. Leading 3-1 in the series, the Ducks return to Anaheim looking to win their first Stanley Cup championship, as NBC Sports presents exclusive high definition coverage tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET. Highlights from Cherry's Game 4 guest stint on NBC follow:
ON SCRUMS AT END OF 2ND PERIOD:
"That's the way it should be, get a little action, the people go nuts. They love it!"
ON FIGHTING IN NHL:
"If I was commissioner, I'd like to get a hold of the guy who put in the instigator rule. The fans love the fights. The players love the fights. The people go nuts on the fights. I hate to get NBC hacked and everything but I'm told the reason they cut it down is because they wanted U.S.A. people to watch it. Families! Can you believe that? That is the dumbest thing I ever heard in my life. U.S., NASCAR where there's crashes, football, kill the quarterback, ultimate fighting. Who's kidding who? The National Hockey League, NBC, and everyone in U.S. television are making a big mistake. We should go back to rock 'em, sock 'em. It would help the game and help your audiences."
ON HIS "SUBDUED" WARDROBE:
"I didn't think the U.S. audiences were ready for one of my biggies."
ON IF CHRIS PRONGER SHOULD HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED:
"I'm going to get in trouble. No. Did I expect him to get it? Yes, because he's a repeat offender."
ON OTTAWA'S ALFREDSSON SHOOTING THE PUCK AT ANAHEIM'S SCOTT NIEDERMAYER:
"I can't believe he's that stupid. If he did, he's awful dumb."
ON MEETING ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER:
"He's a good guy. He's a nice guy. I don't think he knew who I was. He's a left winger now. A tree hugger."
ON DIVING IN HOCKEY:
"It's getting like soccer."
PARTING SHOT:
"Remember Dick Ebersol, more fights, you'll get bigger crowds."
