Deborah Roberts interviews Ashley Smith, the woman who was held hostage in her own apartment for hours by Brian Nichols, the man who allegedly gunned down several people at an Atlanta courthouse this spring. Smith tells Roberts the details of her harrowing ordeal on 20/20, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
And: Elizabeth Vargas interviews Carole Radziwill, who was perhaps the last person to speak to Carolyn Bessette on the day she died. In 1999, in the course of three weeks, Radziwill lost everything, her two closets friends -- Bessette and her husband, John Kennedy, Jr. -- and then her own husband, Anthony, to cancer. She openly discussed her new book, What Remains, the story of a working class girl who married into Americas royal family, the Kennedys.
Plus: Two years after winning American Idol, Fantasia Barino, a high school dropout and single mother, is turning into an American success story. She is about to go on tour and she is embarking on an acting career. But behind the glitter, money and fame, there are some secrets secrets she reveals in her new memoir entitled Life is Not a Fairy Tale. She tells ABC News Correspondent Bill Ritter that she has gone through life barely able to read or write, describing herself as functionally illiterate. Youre illiterate to just about everything so that for me kept me in a box and I didnt, wouldnt come out, she says. She also reveals that she was allegedly raped in ninth grade by a boy she had a crush on. So why is she revealing her secrets now? I want people to just to see, all you gotta do it have a little faith. Have a little faith. Dont give up, says Fantasia.
Also: Bob Brown profiles a young man with a spirit as generous as his talent. Kyle Maynard was born a congenital amputee, a condition which has no known cause and may affect fingers or a limb, but rarely affects all four limbs, as it did with Kyle. But he didnt let his condition keep him from becoming a winning high school wrestler, good enough to compete in his state championships.
I didn't have to wrestle to my opponents, you know, I had to wrestle myself, he tells Brown. His presence as a wrestler could electrify a high school arena and even though he isnt out of his teens, stories about Kyle are rooted like legends at his former north Georgia high school, Collins Hill. Leading a normal life doesn't mean living a stagnant life You're gonna look ahead and you're gonna set impossible goals that other people would say you can't achieve, and you can go out and do it, he says.
20/20 is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and John Stossel. David Sloan is executive producer.
