"The Wonderful World of Disney" Presentation Will Air in HDTV Format With 5.1-Channel Surround Sound and Also in Spanish

"The Princess Diaries," starring Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winner Julie Andrews, will air as a presentation of "The Wonderful World of Disney" SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23 (8:00-10:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network. The movie, which will air in the HDTV format with 5.1-channel surround sound and Spanish audio, also stars Emmy and ALMA Award-winner Hector Elizondo and Anne Hathaway ("The Other Side of Heaven," "Nicholas Nickleby"). In "The Princess Diaries," a klutzy, geeky 15-year-old girl, Mia Thermopolis (Hathaway), who lives with her eclectic artist, single mother (Caroline Goodall, "Easy") in San Francisco, is visited for the very first time by her grandmother (Andrews) and discovers she's really klutzy, geeky royalty - the princess of Genovia. Due to her father's sudden death -- she had never seen him and didn't know he was the crown prince of Genovia -- she becomes the direct heir to the thrown. After an extreme makeover, Mia begins "princess lessons" to see if she has what it takes.

Mia's life is turned upside down as she tries to learn who are her real friends and family.

"The Princess Diaries" stars Julie Andrews (ABC's "Eloise" movies, "Mary Poppins") as Clarisse Renaldi, Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, Hector Elizondo (TV's "Chicago Hope"; "Pretty Woman") as Joe, Heather Matarazzo ("Blue Moon") as Lilly Moscovitz, Mandy Moore ("Chasing Liberty") as Lana Thomas, Caroline Goodall as Helen Thermopolis, Robert Schwartzman ("The Virgin Suidices") as Michael Moscovitz, Erik von Detten as Josh Bryant, Patrick Flueger as Jeremiah Hart, Sean O'Bryan as Mr. O'Connell, Sandra Oh ("Under the Tuscan Sun") as vice principal Gupta and Kathleen Marshall as Charlotte.

"The Princess Diaries," released in 2001, was directed by Garry Marshall ("Pretty Woman," "Runaway Bride") from the screenplay by written by Gina Wendkos ("Coyote Ugly," "Jersey Girl") and based on the novel by Meg Cabot.
