WEEK No. 5:

ABC earned second place during the week (w/o 10/22/07) to a World Series boosted Fox among Total Viewers and across the key adult demographics (AD18-34/AD18-49/AD25-54). In Adults 18-49, ABC (3.7/10) widened its lead this week over third-place CBS to 23% (3.0/8) and over fourth-place NBC to 42% (2.6/7). For the fifth straight week this season, ABC was the definitive leader across all key women demographics, beating out its nearest competitors by sizeable margins: W18-34 +19% (3.8/11 vs. 3.2/10 Fox), W18-49 +26% (4.8/13 vs. 3.8/10 Fox) and W25-54 +22% (5.6/13 vs. 4.6/11 CBS).

Despite competing against Fox's 2007 World Series on 4 nights during the week, ABC generated its largest audience and top Adult 18-49 rating since season premiere week (w/o 9/24/07). The Net was up from the prior week by 5% in Total Viewers (11.2 million vs. 10.7 million) and by 6% in Adults 18-49 (3.7/10 vs. 3.5/10).

Rankings: ABC aired 8 of the week's Top 15 TV shows among Adults 18-49, more than any other network: "Grey's Anatomy" No. 2, "Desperate Housewives" No. 3, "Dancing with the Stars-MON" No. 6, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" No. 7, "Brothers & Sisters" No. 9, while "Samantha Who?," "DWTS the Results-TU" and "Private Practice" all tied at No. 15. The Network claimed 3 of the Top 4 most-watched TV programs, including the No. 1 show overall, as "DWTS" outdrew each of Fox's 2007 World Series telecasts: "Dancing with the Stars-MON" No. 1, "Desperate Housewives" No. 3 and "Grey's Anatomy" No. 4. In Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, ABC's "Samantha Who?" stood as the No. 1 new comedy and "Private Practice" as the No. 1 new drama. "A Special Edition of 20/20: California Burning" on Tuesday ranked as the No. 1 newsmagazine of the week in Adults 18-49 -- "20/20's" largest audience in more than 1 year and its top-rated telecast with Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54 in over 8 months.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year to year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating trends based on the Live + Same Day data stream may be somewhat distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has more than doubled from approximately 9% during the same point in 2006 to more than 20% currently. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. Therefore, the only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

Monday

With its Monday night lineup featuring "Dancing with the Stars," "Samantha Who?" and "The Bachelor," ABC was the most-watched TV network on the night for the fifth consecutive week, surpassing second-place CBS by 3.9 million viewers (16.1 million vs. 12.2 million). Trailing only ESPN with its high-rated "Monday Night Football" telecast (Indianapolis-Jacksonville), ABC took second on the night in Adults 18-49 (4.6/11), topping CBS by 12% (4.1/10).

In addition, the freshman comedy built on its debut performance by 3% in Adults 18-34 (3.4/8 vs. 3.3/8) and saw double-digit increases over its series premiere across each of the key men demographics: M18-34 +36% (1.9/5 vs. 1.4/4), M18-49 +29% (2.7/6 vs. 2.1/5) and M25-54 +11% (3.1/7 vs. 2.8/6).
