Making a splash at AnimeJapan 2022 , Netflix showcased highlights from 40 new exclusive anime titles this year, with a diversified slate across genres that will delight both current fans and new viewers.
The broadened lineup includes lean-back titles such as Thermae Romae Novae - which launches tomorrow and is the first project from Netflix's direct partnership with anime creators - Kotaro Lives Alone and Rilakkuma's Theme Park Adventure. It also features family-friendly anime films like the gravity-defying action blockbuster Bubble that just premiered at the 72nd Berlin Film Festival becoming available on Netflix from April 28, and those produced with top-tier studios like Studio Colorido's Drifting Home.
Netflix also announced the return of fan favorite JoJo's Bizarre Adventure STONE OCEAN, which will continue for episodes 13-24 later this year.
"Anime is one of the cornerstones of our investment in Japan, watched by nearly 90 percent of our members here last year. At the same time, interest in anime has grown worldwide, and more than half of our members globally tuned into it last year," says Kohei Obara, Director, Anime Creative, Netflix.
"From diversifying our slate to bringing back fan favorites, we want to continue growing our members' discovery and love for anime, both in Japan and around the world with this next chapter of anime on Netflix."
During the AnimeJapan stage event, Netflix revealed sneak peeks into upcoming titles including new character art and main casts for The Seven Deadly Sins: Grudge of Edinburgh, with part 1 premiering in 2022, as well as key art and main trailer of GHOST IN THE SHELL: SAC_2045 Season 2, available from 23 May.
Japanese voice talents Megumi Han (Vampire in the Garden, GHOST IN THE SHELL: SAC_2045 Season 2), Mariya Ise (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure STONE OCEAN, TIGER & BUNNY 2, Spriggan), Yuki Kaji (Bubble, The Seven Deadly Sins: Grudge of Edinburgh, Akuma Kun), Junichi Suwabe (ULTRAMAN Season 2, Kotaro Lives Alone) and Kenjiro Tsuda (Thermae Romae Novae) brought the various anime projects to life for fans at the stage event.

Mari Yamazaki's manga masterpiece Thermae Romae, winner of the Cartoon Grand Prize 2010 and the Short Story Award at the 14th Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize, is finally being adapted into a Netflix original anime as Thermae Romae Novae! Mari Yamazaki herself will also be participating in the series as series composer.
This fantastical bathhouse comedy tells the story of Lucius, a young man struggling as a bathhouse designer in the Roman Empire who somehow ends up time traveling between ancient Rome and present-day Japan and incorporating Japan's bath culture in the designs of his own Roman thermae.
The story is set in Tokyo, after bubbles that broke the laws of gravity rained down upon the world. Cut off from the outside world, Tokyo has become a playground for a group of young people who have lost their families, acting as a battlefield for parkour team battles as they leap from building to building. Hibiki, a young ace known for his dangerous play style, makes a reckless move one day and plummets into the gravity-bending sea. His life is saved by Uta, a girl with mysterious powers who appears suddenly. The pair then hear a unique sound audible only to them. Why did Uta appear before Hibiki? Their encounter leads to a revelation that will change the world.

Following the release of their first feature film Penguin Highway in 2018, Studio Colorido received worldwide praise for A Whisker Away, which was distributed exclusively on Netflix in 2020 and ranked in the top 10 most-watched films in over 30 countries. Now Studio Colorido is releasing their long-awaited third feature-length film, Drifting Home.
In this summer adventure, sixth-graders Kosuke, Natsume and their friends enter a large public housing complex, which then begins to drift through the ocean with the children still inside it.
With a visual style that takes the audience from reality to a fantasy world, the film features the familiar beautiful animations fans have come to expect of Studio Colorido.
Baki Hanma, the third part of the anime series based on the hit martial arts manga Baki by Keisuke Itagaki. The first two seasons of Baki were previously released on Netflix, starting with Baki in 2018, and continuing with the Great Raitai Tournament Saga in 2020. At the end of the Great Raitai Tournament Saga, Baki challenges Yujiro, the man known as "the strongest creature on Earth." Yujiro accepts this challenge, and in doing so, recognizes that Baki is a fitting opponent. The stage is set for the explosive events of the ultimate father-son grudge match in the third season of the Baki series, Baki Hanma.
After overcoming countless intense battles with powerful enemies, the time is finally ripe for Baki to face his father, Yujiro Hanma, who is said to be "the strongest creature on Earth." The anime series Kakegurui is set at the illustrious Hyakkaou Private Academy, where the hierarchy is controlled by gambling. The protagonist Yumeko Jabami and her friend Mary Saotome take on the Hyakkaou student council by gambling against them.
