DISNEY-ABC TELEVISION GROUP HONORED WITH FOUR PRESTIGIOUS PEABODY AWARDS
"Scrubs," "Ugly Betty" and ABC News Receive Recognition
The award-winning and critically acclaimed series "Scrubs" and "Ugly Betty," along with two ABC News programs, have been recognized with prestigious Peabody Awards. The winners were announced this morning as the best in electronic media for 2006 by the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
ABC's critically-acclaimed and Globe Globe Award-winning series "Ugly Betty," inspired by an internationally popular telenovela, was recognized for its wry intelligence and heart. "Scrubs," in its sixth season on NBC, is a testimonial to the continuing creative vigor of the comedy about the staff of a hospital where humor and tragedy can collide at any time. Both series are produced by ABC Television Studio.
ABC News was the recipient of two Peabody Awards, more than any other news division. "Brian Ross Investigates: Conduct Unbecoming" was a series of year-long reports that revealed a pattern of unethical behavior in official Washington, culminating in the revelation that Congressman Mark Foley was sending sexually explicit instant messages to former congressional pages. The Ross Unit first broke the Mark Foley story on ABCNEWS.com. "Primetime" was recognized for a special edition, "Out of Control: AIDS in Black America." The hour, reported by "Nightline" co-anchor Terry Moran with a special segment featuring the late Peter Jennings, was the first national network television news documentary on the AIDS epidemic among African Americans -- an epidemic that is spreading fast, but that has attracted little consistent attention from leaders in public health, politics, or religion. The hour was produced by PJ Productions.
The awards will be presented June 4 at a luncheon at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.
