ABC Renews 'What About Brian,' Adds Two Comedies
By Brian Ford Sullivan (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- ABC has added two new comedies to its 2006-07 season roster - "A Day in the Life" and "Let's Rob Mick Jagger" - as well as renewed its midseason drama "What About Brian."

"Life," from Sony Pictures Television, revolves around a young couple's (Josh Cooke, Marla Sokoloff) wedding day as told from the points of view of the various participants. Kurt Fuller ("Desperate Housewives"), Miriam Shor ("Inside Schwartz"), Stephen Rannazzisi ("Punk'd") and Wendie Malick ("Jake in Progress") also star in the project, which comes from creators Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith ("The King of Queens"). Michael Spiller directed the pilot.

"Jagger" likewise is a single-camera comedy about a down on his luck apartment building janitor (Donal Logue) who - along with a crew of similarly ordinary but frustrated accomplices - tries to rob Jagger's Manhattan penthouse. Rob Burnett and Jon Beckerman ("Ed") are behind the Touchstone Television-based half-hour, which also stars Josh Grisetti, Kevin Michael Richardson ("Like Family"), Koji Kataoka ("Committed"), Lenny Venito ("The Sopranos"), Maz Jobrani ("Life on a Stick") and Sofa Vergara ("Hot Properties"). Burnett directed the pilot while David Letterman also serves as an executive producer.

As for the "Brian" pick-up, the news comes within a week of the show's ratings rebound. The show's season finale drew a 3.3 rating among adults 18-49 according to preliminary Nielsen numbers, its best performance since its its Monday, 10:00/9:00c bow on April 17 (also a 3.3 rating).

In other related ABC news, Fred Goss has confirmed on his blog "Out on a Limb" that "Sons & Daughters" will not be returning for a second season. The statement reads: "I don't know a more delicate way to break the news to you all. Sons & Daughters is done. I am of course heart broken. My heart and soul went into this one. These characters feel like my family because in many ways they are. I hate like hell having to give you all news like this after all the high hopes you've expressed for a pick up. I've sometimes been accused of being a "glass half empty" kind of guy but at the moment I don't feel that it's inappropriate or self-indulgent to feel bad about this."
