The WB Unwraps Its February Sweeps Plans

CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- The WB plans to fill its February sweeps schedule with "original episodes of its dramas and comedies, featuring flashbacks to World War II, magic schools, vampires, werewolves, living puppets, car crashes, the return of old loves, loss of innocence and near-death experiences," according to a network press release.

Here's a complete breakdown of what to expect during the key ratings period. (Please note that the following episode descriptions may contain spoilers for future storylines.)

On Sundays, CHARMED will kick-off the sweep on February 8 with a visit to a magical school where the infamous Headless Horseman is beheading teachers. Also in the episode, the secret of Chris' (Drew Fuller) identity is revealed and Reggae singing legend Ziggy Marley performs. On February 15, Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) frees a genie from a bottle only to have her plot the death of the Charmed Ones.

The Sunday line-up continues with the comedy/reality hit THE SURREAL LIFE. Comedian Andy Dick drops by Ron Jeremy's wild pool party and hooks up with Trishelle on February 8. The February 15 episode tries Tammy Faye's patience with a visit to a nudist colony and, on the February 22 season finale, talk show host Sally Jesse Raphael stops by for a no-holds-barred group encounter session.

On Monday nights, 7th HEAVEN'S former cast member Barry Watson returns to Glenoak on February 16, to celebrate a special anniversary with his sister Ruthie (Mackenzie Rosman) in an episode featuring guest stars Richard Lewis, Lorraine Newman and Debi Mazar. There are two weddings in the works on February 23 when Annie's (Catherine Hicks) half-sister Lilly (guest star Michelle Phillips, "Knots Landing") wants their father to walk her down the aisle. In the same episode, Dick Van Patten and Patricia Van Patten guest-star as the parents of a mentally challenged young man who also wants to get married.

On the critically acclaimed drama EVERWOOD, Ephram (Gregory Smith), Amy (Emily VanCamp) and Dr. Brown (Treat Williams) decide to take the next step in their respective relationships on February 9, but nothing turns out as expected. On February 16, Ephram impulsively tells Madison (Sarah Lancaster) he loves her and is crushed when she doesn't respond, and guest star James Earl Jones returns as Ephram's musical mentor Will Cleveland. Finally, on February 23, Ephram's fake I.D. leads to a drunken fight and an evening in jail, while Amy's depression results in drug use, a hallucinatory conversation with her lost love Colin (guest star Mike Erwin) and a life-threatening emergency for Tommy (Paul Wasilewski).

The Tuesday night line-up of GILMORE GIRLS and ONE TREE HILL focuses on big events in small towns. On GILMORE GIRLS, Jess (Milo Ventimiglia) makes a startling confession to Rory (Alexis Bledel) on February 10 and his mother (guest star Kathleen Whilhoite, "ER") introduces her new boyfriend (guest star Michael DeLuise) to her brother Luke (Scott Patterson). On February 17, Lorelai (Lauren Graham) continues her secret relationship with Jason (Chris Eigeman), but turns to Luke for support when her financial problems seem insurmountable, while Rory's problems at Yale lead her to seek comfort from her old flame Dean (Jared Padalecki). Also in this episode, guest star Marion Ross returns as Gran, the Gilmore family matriarch. On February 24, Emily (Kelly Bishop) has a very public meltdown in a mall when she goes shopping with Lorelai and Rory. Finally, on March 2, the family is shocked when Gran's death reveals a disturbing secret.

A violent car crash on ONE TREE HILL leaves Keith (Craig Sheffer) injured and Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) fighting for his life on February 10, leading Dan (Paul Johansson) to race to the hospital and publicly acknowledge that Lucas is his son. On February 17, Lucas' mother Karen (Moira Kelly) is horrified to learn Keith (Craig Sheffer) was drinking at the time of the accident. Lucas' near-death experience prompts him to reevaluate his feelings for Brooke (Sophia Bush) on February 24, and on March 2, Nathan (James Lafferty) chooses which parent to live with and singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow guest-stars as herself.

The Wednesday night team of two critically acclaimed dramas, SMALLVILLE and ANGEL, continues to deliver fantasy, action and adventure in February. On the February 11 episode of SMALLVILLE, Clark (Tom Welling) risks revealing his true identity when he tries to save Pete (Sam Jones III) from death at the hands of dangerous thugs, and Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) discovers that Adam's (guest star Ian Somerhalder) doctor is treating him with an experimental drug. The February 18 episode finds Clark revealing his secrets to a girl with mysterious powers whose "fatal attraction" for Clark puts Lana (Kristin Kreuk) in real danger. Finally, on March 3, Clark realizes that he received a phone call from the future, proving that Adam is a threat to Lana's life.

On February 11, ANGEL (David Boreanaz) travels back to his days in World War II when the U.S. Navy enlisted his aid to retrieve a German submarine with a secret cargo of vampires, including Spike (James Marsters). In an unusual and whimsical episode on February 18, Angel is transformed into a puppet while investigating the deadly effect that a children's television program is having on its audience. On February 25, when they discover a hole in the world that serves as a burial ground for demons that existed before recorded time, Angel and Spike race to stop one of the ancient demons from using Fred's (Amy Acker) body to return to power. Finally, on March 3, Angel reaches out to an old friend from Sunnydale in his desperate attempt to restore Fred to her body.

On Thursday night, comedy takes flight when El Wingador, a competitive chicken-wing-eater, appears on STEVE HARVEY'S BIG TIME, along with an air-guitar champ and a 700-pound Sumo wrestler on February 5. ALL ABOUT THE ANDERSONS features a guest appearance by Jenny McCarthy as a music teacher on February 12. The 9:00-10:00 p.m. hour will feature an encore performance of the outrageous reality/comedy series THE SURREAL LIFE.

The Friday night line-up begins with REBA, starring recent Golden Globe-nominee Reba McEntire. On February 6, Barbra Jean (Melissa Peterman) convinces Reba to go into business with her, and Van (Steve Howey) shaves his head in a male-bonding ritual. Everyone panics when Kyra (Scarlett Pomers) disappears on February 20. On WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU, Holly (Amanda Bynes) misreads Vince's (Nick Zano) reaction to her thoughtfulness and Val (Jennie Garth) finds herself strongly attracted to an old beau on February 13. On the February 6 episode of GROUNDED FOR LIFE, Lily (Lynsey Bartilson) is humiliated by Brad's (Bret Harrison) dorky dance moves, while special one-hour episodes will air on February 20 and February 27. LIKE FAMILY focuses on life-changing events, including the chaos that results when Keith (J Mack Slaughter) and Danika (Megalyn Echikunwoke) try to get their drivers' licenses on February 13. Finally, a special airing of the beloved family classic WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY will air on Sunday, February 29.

Meanwhile, Phoebe gets a glimpse into the future, where she discovers Chris' (Drew Fuller) true identity.

In other matters of the heart, Amy (Emily VanCamp) decides she's ready to have sex with Tommy (Paul Wasilewski), so she works up the courage to ask Dr. Brown (Treat Williams) to write her a prescription for birth control pills, and Andy (Treat Williams) makes the important decision to talk to Ephram and Delia (Vivien Cardone) about Linda (Marcia Cross) spending the night at their house.

Luke tries to talk to Jess about Liz's (guest star Kathleeen Whilhoite) new boyfriend T.J. (guest star Michael Deluise), but Jess angrily tells Luke to stop interfering in everyone's life. When Lorelai (Lauren Graham) does Emily (Kelly Bishop) a favor by attending a charity dinner, she is pleasantly surprised when Jason (Chris Eigeman) also shows up and Emily asks them to pretend they are a couple. LUCAS IS INVOLVED IN A DEADLY CAR ACCIDENT -- On their way to pick up Karen (Moira Kelly) from the airport, Keith (Craig Sheffer) and Lucas' (Chad Michael Murray) car collides with an oncoming vehicle and an unconscious Lucas is left fighting for his life. Having witnessed the accident, Dan (Paul Johansson) races Lucas to the hospital and must acknowledge that Lucas is his son in order to save his life. Meanwhile, Peyton (Hilarie Burton) decides to tell Brooke (Sophia Bush) about the kiss she and Lucas shared.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11

"SMALLVILLE" - (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET)
"Velocity"
PETE DEMANDS CLARK USE HIS POWERS TO HELP HIM -- After Pete (Sam Jones III) purposely blows a street race, the thugs that run it threaten his life, so he asks Clark (Tom Welling) to use his powers to stop them. Furious that Pete would put him in this position, Clark must figure out a way to save Pete and still protect his secret. Meanwhile, Jonathan (John Schneider) begins to suffer the consequences of his deal with Jor-El and Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) discovers that Adam's (guest star Ian Somerhalder) doctor is treating him with a dangerous experimental drug.

"ANGEL" - (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET)
"Why We Fight"
VAMPIRES ABOARD A GERMAN U-BOAT - Lawson (guest star Eyal Podell, "Behind Enemy Lines"), a mysterious man from Angel's (David Boreanaz) past, arrives at Wolfram & Hart and takes the gang hostage. Through flashbacks to World War II, it is revealed that Angel worked with the U.S. Navy to recover a captured German submarine with American sailors on board. The ship also has a secret cargo, a dangerous trio of vampires, including Spike (James Marsters), who were kidnapped by the Germans and forced to help the Nazis. When the sub comes under attack, Angel saves Lawson's life by turning him into a vampire. Now, sixty years later, Lawson has arrived at Wolfram & Hart seeking revenge.

"ALL ABOUT THE ANDERSONS" - (8:30-9:00 p.m. ET)

JENNY MCCARTHY GUEST-STARS - In order to encourage Tuga (Damani Roberts) to continue his piano lessons, Anthony (Anthony Anderson) takes up clarinet again and begins taking lessons with Tuga's teacher (guest star Jenny McCarthy). The teacher is so impressed with Anthony's musical ability she invites him to be part of a recital, but doesn't tell him the average age of the musicians is 9.

"Val and Holly's 'Not-Boyfriends'"
MEN, CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT 'EM -- When Vince's (Nick Zano) grandfather dies, Holly (Amanda Bynes) travels upstate to comfort him, then misreads his reaction to her thoughtfulness. Meanwhile, when Rick (guest star Ed Kerr) has a near-death experience that gives him a deeper appreciation of life, Val (Jennie Garth) finds her former boyfriend more attractive than ever.

Anxious to put Leo (Brian Krause) and Piper (Holly Marie Combs) back together so he can be conceived, Chris (Drew Fuller) uses Phoebe to make his wish come true, but she takes his instructions too literally. Feeling that he is losing Paige, Richard (guest star Balthazar Getty) steals the bottle, hoping to wish Paige (Rose McGowan) back into his life. Jinny steals the bottle from Richard and wishes the Charmed Ones dead.

The housemates take part in a nude volleyball game, Trishelle and Ron bare all, and Rob pleases the crowd at a Karaoke bar.

"The Anniversary"
BARRY WATSON, RICHARD LEWIS, LORRAINE NEWMAN AND DEBI MAZAR ("THE TUXEDO") GUEST-STAR -- Matt (guest star Barry Watson) returns to Glenoak to celebrate a special anniversary with Ruthie (Mackenzie Rosman) and tries desperately to avoid seeing the rest of the family. However, when Lucy (Beverley Mitchell) discovers the secret, she, Eric (Stephen Collins) and Annie (Catherine Hicks) go crazy trying to figure out why he's in town. DEAN COMFORTS RORY, LUKE COMFORTS LORELAI, RICHARD BLOWS UP AT HIS MOTHER -- Although she is completely exhausted by her heavy workload at Yale, Rory (Alexis Bledel) is still horrified when a professor suggests she drop a class, and she confesses her self-doubt to her former boyfriend Dean (Jared Padalecki), who is working in the construction crew at the Dragonfly Inn. Meanwhile, frustrated because she can never get Rory on the phone and by the nonstop work involved in getting the Dragonfly ready to open, Lorelai (Lauren Graham) first accuses Sookie (Melissa McCarthy) of not pulling her weight, then turns to Luke (Scott Patterson) for help and advice. Finally, Richard (Edward Herrmann) is infuriated when he and Lorelai both get a taste of the nastiness that Gran (guest-star Marion Ross) usually reserves for Emily (Kelly Bishop).

Most shocking of all, Karen is horrified to discover that Keith (Craig Sheffer) was drinking while driving at the time of the accident. Meanwhile, Nathan (James Lafferty) tries to win Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz) back after she dumps him.

CLARK SHARES HIS SECRET WITH A MYSTERIOUS NEW GIRL -- Clark (Tom Welling) is forced to use his powers in front of Alicia (Sarah Carter, "Black Sash"), a new girl at school, but he is surprised to find out she has powers of her own. The two develop a bond through their shared secret, but things turn ugly after Alicia becomes obsessive about sharing Clark with anyone else - especially Lana (Kristin Kreuk). Meanwhile, Lana asks Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) to investigate Adam (guest star Ian Somerhalder).

THE GREAT PUPPET CAPER -- When a popular children's show begins to steal the life forces of children by hypnotizing them, Angel (David Boreanaz) goes directly to the studio to uncover the evil doings. Upon entering the building, Angel triggers a spell that transforms him into a puppet. In a race against time, puppet-Angel and company must find a way to reverse the spell, save the lives of hundreds of children and return Angel to his normal vampire state. Meanwhile, Nina (guest star Jenny Mollen), the werewolf Angel befriended, returns to declare her romantic intentions, but puppet-Angel is too embarrassed to reciprocate.

KYRA IS MISSING - The entire Hart clan goes into panic mode when Kyra (Scarlett Pomers) disappears from Brock (Christopher Rich) and Barbra Jean's (Melissa Peterman) house in the middle of the night. Meanwhile, an exuberant Van (Steve Howey) can't understand why Cheyenne (JoAnna Garcia) is petrified at the thought of appearing with him on a cable sports show, but the tables quickly turn once the cameras start rolling.

"The Interview"
HOLLY BLOWS OFF HER COLLEGE ADMISSION INTERVIEW TO BE WITH VINCE -- After blowing off her admissions interview at Columbia to hang out with Vince (Nick Zano), Holly (Amanda Bynes) is shocked to learn that the next available interview is in 2005. Val (Jennie Garth) is furious that Holly has once again put Vince ahead of her own future. Meanwhile, Lauren (Leslie Grossman) contemplates ending things with her boyfriend doctor, Brad (guest star Ken Marino), due to his uncontrollable giggling during their lovemaking.

Meanwhile, when the Finnerty's throw Brad a birthday party to take his mind off his parents' recent breakup, Sean secretly invites Brad's dad to the party as part of his "plan" to reunite him with his wife Connie (guest star Nancy Cassaro). Unfortunately, Connie has taken Claudia's (Megyn Price) advice to "get some," which prompts her to pursue Eddie.

EPHRAM GETS A FAKE I.D. AND MIKE ERWIN GUEST-STARS --- Ephram (Gregory Smith) and Bright (Chris Pratt) conspire to get Ephram a fake I.D. so that he can get into a bar to see Madison (guest star Sarah Lancaster) perform with her band. Meanwhile, Nina (Stephanie Niznik) leans on Andy (Treat Williams) for emotional support after she is served with divorce papers, but the genuine affection between the two raises a red flag for Linda (Marcia Cross); Harold (Tom Amandes) and Rose (Merrilyn Gann) schedule a meeting with Amy's (Emily VanCamp) guidance counselor after receiving her less-than-stellar report card. Finally, Tommy (guest star Paul Wasilewski) takes Amy to a party where she finds closure over the loss of Colin (Mike Erwin), but the evening takes a life-threatening turn.

When Lorelai questions her mother on her out-of-control spending, Emily breaks down and admits that she is getting back at Richard (Edward Herrmann), who has been ignoring her to concentrate on his new business.

LUCAS TRIES TO WIN PEYTON BACK -- After his near-death experience, Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) decides he made the wrong choice between Brooke (Sophia Bush) and Peyton (Hilarie Burton), so he breaks things off with Brooke and secretly rekindles his romance with Peyton. However, the truth becomes obvious after he is rushed to the emergency room again and the girls come face to face in the hospital. Meanwhile, unable to pay his mortgage after paying Lucas' hospital bill, Keith (Craig Sheffer) puts his garage up for sale.

However, everyone is shocked when Vince shows up at the hospital alive and seemingly well - until his liver starts failing again. In a desperate attempt to keep his brother alive, Garrett straps a Kryptonite bomb to himself and demands that Vince be given Jonathan's liver or he will blow up the building.

Along the way, mild disasters befall each of the odious golden ticket-holding children, including a young boy named Charlie (Peter Ostrum). The film was directed by Mel Stuart and written by Roald Dahl.

ONE LESS GILMORE -- When Gran (Marion Ross) suddenly dies, Richard (Edward Herrmann) falls apart over the loss of his mother. Emily (Kelly Bishop) handles the funeral arrangements with her usual efficiency until she finds a letter Gran had written to Richard years earlier, begging him not to marry Emily. Lorelai (Lauren Graham) is forced to take over the funeral arrangements, leading to her own small breakdown while buying new underwear for Gran to be buried in.

GRAMMY AWARD-WINNER SHERYL CROW GUEST STARS -- Nathan (James Lafferty) must decide which parent to live with after the divorce, but Dan (Paul Johansson) decides to force his hand by threatening to reveal Deb's (Barbara Alyn Woods) darkest secrets in court unless Nathan chooses him. Meanwhile, Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) meets a beautiful stranger who starts his head spinning. Grammy Award-winner Sheryl Crow appears as herself and performs the song "The First Cut Is The Deepest" in Karen's Cafe.

ADAM ATTACKS LANA -- Clark (Tom Welling) receives a panicked call from Lana (Kristin Kreuk) and hears a gunshot before the line goes dead, but when he arrives at the Talon he is stunned to discover she is alive and well. Clark realizes the phone call came from the next day and that Adam (guest star Ian Somerhalder) is the one who will shoot Lana.

THE END OF FRED -- Angel (David Boreanaz) and Spike (James Marsters) return from England defeated, knowing that the ancient demon Illyria has completely taken over Fred's (Amy Acker) body and soul. Upon learning that Knox (guest star Jonathan Woodward) and Gunn (J. August Richards) have each contributed to her demise, Wesley (Alexis Denisof) is bent on revenge and Angel tries everything to restore Fred, including calling on an old friend from Sunnydale. Meanwhile, Illyria tries to locate an ancient temple where she believes she will find an army ready to help her destroy mankind.
