'Smallville' Opener Tops Among Teens, Other Key Demos
By Brian Ford Sullivan (TFC)

CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- The WB can rest easy: the move of "Smallville" from Tuesdays and Wednesdays is looking to be a major success.

In a press release touting the results from its opening week numbers, the network revealed "Smallville" won its new Wednesday, 8:00/7:00c time slot in four key demographics - men 12-34 (3.8/13), teens (3.5/13), female teens (3.4/13) and male teens (3.6/12) - beating NBC's "Ed," ABC's comedies, CBS' "60 Minutes II," FOX's "Paradise Hotel" and UPN's "Enterprise."

It also finished second in adults 18-34 (3.8/12), persons 12-34 (3.7/12), and men 18-34 (3.9/13); and third in women 18-34 (3.7/11), women 12-34 (3.6/11) and adults 18-49 (3.0/8). Lead-out "Angel" was no slouch either as the show's fifth season premiere finished second in men 18-34 (3.3/9) and third in men 12-34 (3.0/9) for the 9:00/8:00c hour.

In total the duo combined to give the WB a first place finish for the night in teens (3.0/11) and male teens (3.0/10) not to mention second place in men 18-34 (3.6/11) and men 12-34 (3.4/11); and third in adults 18-34 (3.5/10), persons 12-34 (3.4/10) and females 12-34 (3.3/10).

Meanwhile, there may be some life for the Frog in "Smallville's" old Tuesday, 9:00/8:00c home. Week two of the freshman drama "One Tree Hill" scored across the board gains in practicially every demographic for its latest installment. The series achieved gains of 56% in adults 18-34 (1.4/4), 46% in women 18-34 (1.9/5), 80% in men 18-34, 36% in persons 12-34 (1.9/6), 22% in women 12-34 (2.8/8), 100% in men 12-34, 38% in adults 18-49, 25% in women 18-49 (1.5/4), +40% in men 18-49, 11% in teens (3.0/11), 4% in female teens (5.2/19), 67% in male teens, 34% in total viewers (3.3 million) and 26% in household rating. Overall, "Hill" won its time slot in teens (3.0/11) and female teens (5.2/19).

Lead-in "Gilmore Girls" was the real winner on Tuesday though as its latest episode was the number one ranked show of the entire night in teens (3.3/13) and female teens (5.9/23). Equally as impressive was its second place finish in the 8:00/7:00c hour among persons 12-34 (2.5/9), women 18-34 (3.1/10) and women 12-34 (3.9/8); and third in adults 18-34 (2.2/7).

Last but not least for the WB was Monday's stellar outing by "7th Heaven." The show's September 29 episode was number one across all networks for the night in women 12-34 (3.9/11), teens (3.8/13) and female teens (6.1/21). The family drama was also strong in all its target demos, ranking second in its time period in adults 18-34 (3.0/9), persons 12-34 (3.2/10), women 18-34 (4.0/12) and women 12-34 (4.6/14); and third in adults 18-49 (2.5/7), women 18-49 (3.5/9) and household rating (4.9/8). "Heaven" even placed third among all shows in its time period among total viewers (7.2 million).

Lead-out "Everwood" also rose to the challenge, equaling "Heaven's" top scores in teens (3.8) and female teens (6.1/21) as the second-year drama maintained 100% of its lead-in across all teen demographics.
