CBS NEWS CONTRIBUTOR MARIA ELENA SALINAS AND "48 HOURS" INVESTIGATE THE DEATH OF A BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY STUDENT IN NEW YORK AND THE INTERNATIONAL HUNT FOR HER KILLER IN "THE MURDER OF HALEY ANDERSON"

Saturday, April 25, 10:00 PM

When a young nursing student at Binghamton University in New York went missing, her roommates used the app Find My Friends to track her down. What the app led them to launched an international manhunt for her killer.

In her first report for 48 HOURS, CBS News contributor Maria Elena Salinas investigates the death of the student and the search for her killer in "The Murder of Haley Anderson," to be broadcast Saturday, April 25 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

When Haley Anderson went missing from her off-campus apartment in March 2018, her roommates became concerned after many failed attempts at reaching her. Using the app Find My Friends, they tracked her phone to the apartment of Orlando Tercero, a fellow nursing student and Anderson's friend. When no one answered the door at Tercero's apartment, two of Anderson's roommates decided to climb in through an open window. What they found was Anderson's body in Tercero's bed.

"I didn't know for sure she was dead at the time," Anderson's roommate Josie Artin tells 48 HOURS in an exclusive interview. "She just was so pale, you know?"

Tercero was nowhere to be found. Investigators soon located surveillance footage, which captured Tercero and Anderson entering his apartment and later just him leaving with a suitcase. What happened that night, and why did he leave? That question would send investigators on an international quest for justice stretching all the way to Nicaragua. Salinas spoke exclusively with Anderson's mother, boyfriend and friends. She also traveled to Nicaragua to retrace Tercero's steps and speak to friends he grew up with there.
