'20/20' INVESTIGATES HOW DNA DETECTIVE CECE MOORE BROKE DECADES-LONG COLD CASE IN A FEW DAYS

Hour Includes New Details on Suspect, a Popular DJ in the Local Community

'20/20' Airs Friday, Oct. 5 (10:01 - 11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC

For over 25 years authorities searched for the man who brutally murdered 25-year-old Pennsylvania teacher Christy Mirack. But this summer there was a major break in the case when world-renowned DNA detective CeCe Moore used DNA found at the crime scene, a genealogical website and her own expertise with family trees to identify potential suspect, Raymond Rowe, in just a few days from her living room. ABC News correspondent Ryan Smith reports on the decades of suspense that loomed over the case; how authorities surreptitiously collected the DNA of Rowe, confirming he was a near perfect match to the DNA left at the crime scene; and the arrest of Rowe, a 49-year-old husband and father, known as popular entertainer DJ Freez in his local community. "20/20" airs Friday, Oct. 5 (10:01 - 11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC.

"20/20" features the first interview with Harry Goodman, the former principal at Christy's school who found her body, and interviews with CeCe about her role in identifying Rowe and the new trend of law enforcement using genealogical websites to crack cold cases; Vince Mirack, Christy's brother; Annie Adams, one of Christy's best friends; Christina Butler Haubert, one of Christy's former students; Emily Noble, Raymond's ex-girlfriend; Barbara Hough Roda, a local reporter assigned to cover the case full time; and Craig Stedman, the Lancaster County District Attorney.

Just before Christmas 1992, Principal Goodman became concerned when Christy didn't show up to work and could not be reached via phone. After driving to her house, he stumbled upon the disturbing murder scene. Christy, dressed in her coat and gloves about to leave for work, was found raped, strangled and beaten inside her home. Headlines about the crime quickly took over the quiet town; but as authorities eliminated suspects, the case grew cold. Last April, after news broke that a genetic genealogy website had led to an arrest in the Golden State Killer crime spree, Christy's case heated back up. Using the same techniques that authorities employed in the Golden State Killer case, CeCe concluded to policethat she had found a potential suspect in Christy's killing. This summer, Rowe was arrested and charged with criminal homicide and sexual assault, and a trial is expected to begin in May 2019.

"20/20" is anchored by David Muir and Amy Robach. David Sloan is senior executive producer.
