A MOTHER REUNITES WITH HER DAUGHTER NEARLY 50 YEARS AFTER BEING TOLD HER NEWBORN HAD DIED

'Mystery in the Maternity Room' Airs on '20/20,' Friday, September 2, on ABC

It was the reunion seen around the world - a mother and daughter crying with joy as they were reunited almost 50 years after the mother was told her baby daughter died.

Zella Jackson Price, a gospel singer and mother of five other children, said she was completely shocked to discover the baby she thought had died in 1965 at Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis was very much alive. And that baby Diane, now a 50-year-old mother of four, is absolutely elated to have found her birth mother. The reunion triggered an avalanche of publicity for Zella and her zealous attorney AL Watkins, and scores of other mothers who gave birth at the Homer G Phillips hospital in the 1960s came forward - wondering if the infants they were told had died are also alive.

Since the reunion, documents have been discovered that contradict Zella's claims. Documents dating back to her birth indicate that her mother, Zella Jackson, abandoned the baby and that the birth actually took place at City Hospital # 1, not Homer G. Phillips as Price has said. Diane's adoptive family has also come forward saying that when they took the baby in they were told that Diane had been abandoned. Is the miraculous "reunion" not as it appears? "20/20"'s Deborah Roberts recounts the shocking six-month long investigation.
