"LAST DANCE: A TWISTED LOVE TRIANGLE ENDS IN MURDER"

The Convicted Killer Speaks Exclusively to "20/20" in a Dramatic Jailhouse Interview, Airing Friday, August 5, on ABC

A divorced mother of four, two wealthy doctors, a hitman and a twisted love triangle that ends in murder. In northwest Texas, Richelle Shetina and Dr. Joseph Sonnier, a wealthy pathologist, are madly in love and traveling the world together. One quiet summer morning their fairytale romance abruptly ends when Dr. Sonnier is found brutally murdered. Police are stumped until they receive a tip out of the blue, leading them to the man who pulled the trigger, David Shepard. In the exclusive television interview with Correspondent Ryan Smith, Shepard talks about why he killed Dr. Sonnier and why he initially admitted that he was hired as a hitman by Dr. Mike Dixon, Shetina's ex-boyfriend. Shepard now tells "20/20" that Dr. Dixon did not in fact hire him to kill Dr. Sonnier. "Last Dance: A Twisted Love Triangle Ends in Murder" airs on "20/20" on FRIDAY, AUGUST 5 (10:00- 11:00p.m EDT), on the ABC Television Network.

In a story "20/20" has been covering since November 2015, Shetina spoke exclusively about the murder of Dr. Sonnier and about her ex-boyfriend Dr. Nixon. Also in an exclusive interview, Shepard's daughters opened up about their father and what he's done. Smith's extensive report includes interviews with Dr. Sonnier's three sons, investigators, prosecution and defense team, as well as interrogation tapes and key crime scene photos.

"20/20" is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and David Muir. David Sloan is senior executive producer.
